(GMM) The entire Formula 1 world is wondering, ‘What’s next?’ after Wednesday’s shock news of Christian Horner (pictured) being sacked.

Having survived last year’s ‘sexting’ scandal, a resulting power struggle and several high-profile staff departures, Christian Horner has been suddenly sacked by Red Bull.

It is believed the move came after his staunch supporter, 51 percent owner Chalerm Yoovidhya, finally caved and agreed with the Austrian side of the business that he should go.

Also fascinating is that the news broke on the very same day that Mercedes’ executive board approved a bid to try to lure Max Verstappen to the German marque for 2026 and beyond.

“A coincidence? Hardly,” the Austrian newspaper Osterreich noted.

After the checkered flag at Silverstone – another difficult race for Verstappen – Horner was seen arguing with Max’s influential father, Jos.

“You could see that Jos was anything but happy with the situation,” former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher told Sky Deutschland, admitting that his criticism of Horner left him on a “blacklist”.

Schumacher thinks Horner’s 20-year-old reign at Red Bull has simply run its course.

“In the end, it really was the case that they were no longer able to attract or retain good people,” he said. “They simply didn’t want to come because of his personality.”

Other rumors suggest Horner was poised to try once again to oust consultant Dr Helmut Marko, or block a move by the Verstappen camp to buy into the Milton-Keynes based team.

“His team most likely wants to buy shares, like Toto Wolff did at Mercedes,” former F1 driver Vitaly Petrov said on Telegram.

Bernie Ecclestone, a long-time Horner confidante, says the 51-year-old was shocked by Wednesday’s news. Dutch racing personality Tom Coronel surmised: “Something must have happened to cause a bit of panic.

“This tells me something’s wrong. There must have been a fire,” he told the Dutch publication Formule 1.

Mika Salo agrees, telling Ilta Sanomat: “I believe there is something behind the scenes that the public is not being told about.

“There is nothing else to say about this, unless you know.”

Two Horner allies – communications boss Paul Smith and head of marketing Oliver Hughes – are following Horner out of the door, and rumors already suggest the Briton could be heading to Ferrari or Alpine.

Alpine boss and Horner ally Flavio Briatore wished the Briton well for his “next adventure”.

Quadruple world champion Verstappen stayed quiet about the most recent rumblings about Horner’s future at recent races, but it is believed he had a meeting with CEO Oliver Mintzlaff just a few days ago.

Max and Jos’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen was very careful with his words on Wednesday: “It’s up to Red Bull to share the background to the decision.

“In Red Bull’s view, this is the best way forward,” he added. “It’s up to the parent company to hire people and make strategic choices.”

As for the future, Vermeulen added: “Nothing changes for us. We continue to look at the sporting side and are looking for more performance, so that we can return to the top.”

A correspondent for Sky Italia believes Verstappen was “using the Mercedes offer” to force change at Red Bull. “The Dutchman asked for a second person to work with alongside Horner.

“Now, with this move, many possibilities open up. But I believe that with Horner’s departure, Verstappen is destined to fulfill his contract until 2028.”

Red Bull Racing, including the new Red Bull-Ford engine project, will now be headed by Laurent Mekies, with Alan Permane stepping up at Racing Bulls.

“We continue to look forward to returning to the Formula 1 grid in 2026,” a Ford official declared.

NASCAR Cup team dropping a car after Chicago meltdown

Corey Heim is considered one of the top NASCAR prospects not currently competing in the Cup Series, and for good reason. Corey Heim is considered one of the top NASCAR prospects not currently competing in the Cup Series, and for good reason. He has won 16 races in the Truck Series, five this year alone, and is the runaway points leader and clear championship favorite in his third full season with Toyota’s Tricon Garage.

Heim, a development driver for 23XI Racing, made his first Cup Series start of the year at Kansas Speedway back in May, and he impressively beat out all three of the Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan-owned team’s full-time drivers: Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Riley Herbst.

Unfortunately for him, things did not go nearly as well as Nashville Superspeedway in June, as a mistake led to a wreck which knocked him out of the race.

Things got even worse at Chicago.

For the first time since November 2018 at Texas Motor Speedway, there were more cars on a non-Daytona 500 Cup Series entry list than there were spots in the race. With Heim in a non-chartered (open) No. 67 Toyota, he was one of five drivers battling for four open spots in the 40-car field.

Most fans had the DNQ battle coming down to Josh Bilicki and Katherine Legge, given the fact that they were competing for part-time teams in Garage 66 and Live Fast Motorsports, respectively, while Heim was thought to be relatively safe, alongside the likes of Will Brown at Kaulig Racing and Austin Hill at Richard Childress Racing.

With 23XI Racing, Kaulig Racing, and Richard Childress Racing all fielding multiple full-time entries, they should not have had much problem getting into the race on speed.

But in perhaps the most humbling moment of his young career, Heim made contact with the wall in qualifying and damaged the car to the point where his speed was the worst among the four open entries in the first group, and it was clearly beatable in the second.

In group two, Legge was the only driver of an open car, and she managed to beat Heim’s time, making Heim the first driver to fail to qualify for a Cup race other than Daytona 500 since Timmy Hill failed to qualify at Texas with MBM Motorsports (the team now known as Garage 66) nearly seven years ago.

Heim and the No. 67 Toyota are not on the entry list for this Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

In fact, Heim does not currently have any more starts planned for the remainder of the 2025 season, and though he had been rumored to replace Riley Herbst behind the wheel of the No. 35 Toyota at 23XI Racing next year, a Cup Series promotion, at least to 23XI Racing, does not yet appear to be on the horizon.

Of the five drivers of open cars in Chicago, Legge is the only one set to return at Sonoma. With the No. 78 Chevrolet being the only open car on the entry list, since no others were added, she is locked into the race after recording a career-high 19th place finish on Sunday in the Windy City.

TNT Sports is set to provide live coverage of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 from Sonoma Raceway starting at 3:30 p.m. ET this Sunday, July 13.

The partnership between Sukup Manufacturing Co. and the Andretti INDYCAR program unites two organizations driven by innovation, community and a passion for excellence. With over six decades at the forefront of agricultural advancement, Sukup proudly produces American-made products that support rural communities and champion sustainable solutions, values that align with Andretti’s commitment to pushing the limits of technology both on and off the track.

Also serving as the Title Sponsor of the doubleheader race weekend at Iowa Speedway, Sukup Manufacturing Co. will highlight its revolutionary Synk product line, which unifies grain monitoring and measurement systems into one streamlined, easy-to-use platform, on the livery of Kirkwood’s No. 27 Sukup Honda during the Synk 275 and the Farm to Finish 275. Designed to be simpler, smarter and safer, Sukup’s Synk technology gives farmers greater accuracy, efficiency and control over their operations.

Kirkwood will debut the Sukup brand on track during the opening practice session of the Sukup INDYCAR Race Weekend on Friday, July 11. The action continues throughout the weekend, with Races 1 and 2 set for Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, both airing live on FOX.

JILL GREGORY, PRESIDENT, ANDRETTI GLOBAL “As one of Iowa’s leading manufacturers and a long-time supporter of motorsports, Sukup is a natural fit for this weekend’s doubleheader at Iowa Speedway. We’re proud to have them as the primary partner on Kyle’s No. 27 and thrilled to see their deeper involvement as the event’s title sponsor, a true testament to their passion for racing and their home state community.”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, DRIVER OF NO. 27 SUKUP HONDA, ANDRETTI INDYCAR  “I’m thrilled to have Sukup on board as my primary partner this weekend in Iowa. As the title sponsor of the race, they’ve already shown tremendous support for INDYCAR, so carrying their name on the No. 27 Sukup Honda means a lot to me. I got my first oval win in St. Louis last month, and with two chances this weekend, I’m hoping we can take Sukup to Victory Lane here in Iowa.”
