Dalton, who helped start the CVCC esports program when it launched in 2019, has helped guide the team to six championships. This includes back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association national championships in Call of Duty.
The Red Hawks esports program was nominated for two awards, including two-year program of the year. Two current students and one alumnus also represented the program during the event — Bradley Jamison, Omar Rueda-Vazquez and Evan Petty.
HCAM curriculum coordinator Ellen Barefoot Annas talks about reviving the school’s Esports team, which fizzled out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fluid Numerics owner Joe Schoonover talks about the importance of acquainting students with computer technology.

“I know this (award) says director of the year, but this is about them,” Dalton said. “They did that. I did my best to put them on the right path and help them. This is as much about them than it is me.”

Cody Dalton accepts his award at Ohio State University. 
Dalton highlighted the program’s accomplishments during his acceptance speech and gave credit to the 91 student he has coached, including 53 all-academic honorees with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Dalton acknowledged all of those involved in supporting the program, including CVCC President Garrett Hinshaw and administration, Jennifer Jones and her CVCC Foundation staff, Luke Walling with Corporate Armor, Adrian and James Abernathy with Mr. Game & Lounge and Spenser Clark with Red Fox Gaming.

Catawba Valley Community College esports program leader Cody Dalton was named the two-year director of the year at the first Scholastic Esports Awards held Jan. 11 and 12 at Ohio State University.
