“I did this while I was growing up, so it’s like a full circle moment for me,” said high school student Lauren McMahon.”

With a burst of speed in the shuttle run or a show of strength in the pull-up competition, elementary school athletes showcased their talent and hard work at Southeast Raleigh High School.

“Run really fast and do my best,” she explained.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Some of Wake County Public Schools’ best young athletes showed off their skills in a district-wide competition known as First In Fitness.

Arianna Rhodes who attends Root Elementary has a simple strategy for the shuttle run.

“I feel like it’s really wholesome, like they’re here doing something that’s good for their health,” Kelly Flanagan chimed in. “Their parents are here supporting them, which is really fun.”

Each school chose the top athlete in for their grade in each of several athletic events, including shuttle run, pull ups, speed rope, mile run, hundred-yard dash, long jump, and triathlon to compete at Southeast Raleigh High School.

These young athletes say that First In Fitness isn’t just about winning, it’s about supporting each other, learning from the experience, and hoping to come back next year and do it all again.

“It teaches me that if I keep making mistakes, I can keep learning from them and get faster,” Sadie Vidovich added.

“I like cheering for my friends and running fast,” Arianna said.

High school students got to help out with each event.

Sadie Vidovich, a third grader at Pleasant Union Elementary School, said she’s been practicing hard to run in the hundred-yard dash.

“I’m very proud,” noted her mom, Alisa Rhodes. “We’re very proud.”

Plenty of parents came to cheer on their kids.

“I love it. I’m a track coach myself, so I love seeing her getting involved in the sport and I think she has a bright future,” said Arianna’s dad, Brandon Williams. “It just makes me happy to see her out here.”

“I have been waking up pretty early to go, and I’ve practiced for an hour,” she said.  “I’m really proud of myself.”

Elementary schools from the southern half of the county competed Wednesday; the southern half competed Thursday, and sixth graders will compete Monday.
