If approved by a judge, the NCAA will stop enforcing rules prohibiting NIL from being used as a recruiting inducement. The NCAA also will not adopt any new rules banning NIL in recruiting. This week’s development comes less than a month before another major case — House vs. NCAA — is expected to have its settlement approved. Those terms will pave the way for schools to begin paying players directly later this year through .5 million in revenue-sharing.
In February 2024, a federal judge sided with the states, granting a preliminary injunction that kept the NCAA from enforcing its rules. The state and association announced in January that they were settling the case before filing the proposed terms Monday.
“I’m glad to see the NCAA give up on defending a world that no longer exists,” Tennessee attorney general Jonathan Skrmetti said in a statement. “I hope the association’s laudable change of position marks a transition from acting as the worst kind of HOA toward cultivating a new era of great college sports for athletes, schools, and fans. We all dream of a future when you can keep up with college sports without having to learn the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.”(Photo: Andy Lyons / Getty Images)Athletes who are being recruited by NCAA schools will now have the ability to negotiate name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation under the terms of a proposed settlement of an antitrust lawsuit brought by the states of Tennessee and Virginia against the NCAA in 2024.The changes come after a federal lawsuit was filed in January 2024 by the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia after an NCAA inquiry into potential recruiting/NIL violations surrounding Volunteers quarterback Nico Iamaleava. He was a five-star recruit whose multi-million-dollar recruiting process drew national attention. Florida, New York and the District of Columbia eventually joined in the suit against the NCAA.“We look forward to continuing to support prospective and current student-athletes while we work toward a more equitable future for college sports.”“This agreement continues the progress we have made over the last few years in allowing prospective and transferring student-athletes to seek out NIL opportunities,” the NCAA said in a statement. “This judgment is fully consistent with the House settlement and underscores our support for student-athletes benefiting from their NIL and our commitment to provide increased benefits to student-athletes at every stage in their collegiate experience, creating a sustainable model for the future of college sports.Advertisement

HUDSONVILLE – Grant VanderZee admits his serving could use some work.
But the Holland Christian star was nearly perfect when it counted.
VanderZee served six-straight points to finish off a 3-0 victory over Kalamazoo Christian to advance to the Division 2 boys volleyball state championship game.
The Maroons won 25-12, 25-21 and 25-15 on Friday afternoon at Hudsonville High School in the state semifinals.
“It feels awesome,” said VanderZee, who was named Michigan’s Mr. Volleyball last week. “Obviously, last year we didn’t get the chance (to make it this far). But this year we’ve pulled it off and it’s the farthest we’ve gone in the program’s history. It means a lot.”

Holland Christian will play the winner of Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hudsonville.
“I’m ecstatic,” Maroons coach Mark Walraven said. “It’s the first time for Holland Christian to get this far in the state. We’ve got a team that can go all the way.”
Walraven said he was surprised the Maroons cruised to three-straight wins.
“You don’t expect to win in three,” he said. “In volleyball, sometimes you lose momentum and then you gain momentum back. I would have expected to drop a set this deep in the playoffs. But we played great. Hats off to Kalamazoo Christian, but we just played well and had it all together today.”
VanderZee, a 6-foot-6 senior, has a powerful arm at the net. And his coach said his jump serve is just as powerful. But not very accurate. So they came up with a solution.
“I only jump served last year,” he said. “But I developed the float serve in the offseason. It’s just more reliable. The jump serve is a pretty easy ball to receive. So the float moves back and forth and it’s hard for them to control them. It can move side to side.”
So VanderZee was thrilled to reel off six-straight points in the final game.
“It was awesome,” he said. “I’ve been really struggling with my serves lately. The float serve was going in today. I picked a spot and aimed for it and just see what happens. And they were struggling with it.”
Junior brings much-needed energy
Jacob Tinholt is an athletic, bouncy volleyball player and had some big plays at the net on Friday.
“Jacob played great,” Walraven said. “Everything about his game is good. He passed well in the backcourt and he’s always great at the net. Our focus is to minimize mistakes in games like this and he did that today.”
But his enthusiasm is what really stands out about the Holland Christian junior.
“He is as passionate as anyone on the court,” Walraven said. “Sometimes his emotions are too much. But that’s part of the sport. His emotions can bring a lot to the game and he can rally the team around his passion.”

EUGENE, Ore– Oregon beach volleyball has a new head coach following the departure of Matt Ulmer several months ago.
On Friday, Oregon director of athletics Rob Mullens announced the hiring of Kristian Kuld as the program’s newest lead at the helm.
In 11 seasons as an assistant coach for the Long Beach State beach volleyball team, Kuld helped The Beach to five NCAA/AVCA Championship appearances as well as more than 225 wins and seven top-10 finishes.
He will take over the program ahead of construction of new beach volleyball courts and locker rules that are apart of the Hamilton Walton Transformation Project.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kristian to Eugene as the next leader of Oregon beach volleyball,” Mullens said. “This is an exciting time for our program and we are looking forward to having Kristian on board, as he brings tremendous experience and knowledge in the sport of beach volleyball and has competed at the highest levels during his time as both a player and a coach. His dedication to providing a first-class student-athlete experience aligns perfectly with our values.”
“I am incredibly honored and excited to join the University of Oregon as the new beach volleyball head coach,” Kuld said. “I am deeply grateful to Rob Mullens and the rest of the UO administration for the opportunity to lead this program into an exciting new era. I look forward to contributing to the strong tradition of athletic excellence at Oregon and building something special together. I can’t wait to get started. Go Ducks!”
This is the first time since the 2016 season that Oregon has had two different coaches leading both Oregon volleyball & beach volleyball.
Last season the Ducks finished 8-20 and ended the season on a three-game losing streak.

Two University of Kentucky deans are no longer in their roles.
As of May 15, Padraic Kenney is no longer serving as UK’s Graduate School dean, according to UK spokesperson Jay Blanton.
An email sent to faculty also confirmed that Rosalie Mainous is no longer serving as dean of the College of Nursing on June 6.
The email, sent by Provost Robert S. DiPaola, said Gwen Moreland, chief nurse executive for UK HealthCare, is now serving as acting dean of the College of Nursing. Blanton said that Vice Provost Jana Jasinski is serving as acting dean of UK’s Graduate School.
According to Blanton, Kenney is on paid leave for the next year. Blanton said he “can’t speak to what will happen after next year” regarding Kenney’s employee status.
Blanton did not provide a reason for either dean’s departure.
“As a matter of policy, we don’t talk about personnel matters,” Blanton said.
Blanton said that DiPaola will provide more details about the search for new deans, though no timeline was given for when the permanent replacements will be hired.
“We’ve got, in both cases, really strong acting leadership in both the Graduate School and the College of Nursing, so we’ve time to make that transition while you have strong leadership in place,” Blanton said.

It’s hard to quantify Los Cabos beaches: They’re innumerable, with golden sandy stretches lined one after another across the municipality’s 125 miles of picturesque coastline. It’s also hard to rate them aesthetically: They’re all beautiful.
So, which ones are the best to visit? It depends on your idea of a perfect day at the beach. If you like swimming, I can immediately suggest several beaches and eliminate others that have steep drop-offs or strong rip currents. Do you prefer beaches where you can enjoy drinking and dining, or where you can go snorkeling?
All beaches in Los Cabos have strengths and weaknesses based on factors like these. So, in the interests of visitors who haven’t had a chance to experience many local beaches, here are the standouts in some important categories.
Swimming
(David Vives/Unsplash)
Several beaches in Los Cabos should be avoided for swimming as they are dangerous. These notably include Playa Divorcio and Playa Solmar. However, many others are safe, with a green flag displaying the quality of the swimming conditions. Playa Palmilla, site of the swimming portion of the annual Ironman 70.3 race, gets the nod as the best, thanks to its calm currents and onsite lifeguard (a prerequisite of Blue Flag beaches, of which there are 25 locally.
The best: Playa Palmilla (San José del Cabo) Honorable mention: Playa Santa María (Tourist Corridor), Playa Chileno (Tourist Corridor), Playa El Médano (Cabo San Lucas)
Snorkeling
(Friend of the Sea)
Most boat tours departing from Cabo San Lucas take people to Chileno or Santa María Bays to snorkel in the waters off those respective beaches. I would endorse either, but Playa Chileno is a slightly better option — more marine life, and more space to explore — and a lot cheaper if you nix the boat tickets and get there on your own. However, remember to bring a mask and fins, and be ready for lots of company, as Chileno is a local favorite.
The best: Playa Chileno Honorable mention: Playa Santa María, Playa Cabo Pulmo (East Cape)
Diving
(Semarnat/Twitter)
Cabo Pulmo’s beach is beautiful, its coral reef system is one of the oldest in North America and its abundance of marine life is unmatched anywhere in the Sea of Cortés; three good reasons why this world-class East Cape dive site is part of a national park that has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The only other dive sites locally that rival it are at Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas. Which is to say, they’re close to Playa del Amor. However, it’s not as if you can arrange anything or get equipment, as Lover’s Beach — the most gorgeous anywhere south of La Paz — lacks services. So this one is a walkover.
The best: Playa Cabo Pulmo
Surfing
(Agencia Perspectiva/Cuartoscuro)
This is tough. There are so many great surf spots in Los Cabos, and they’re scattered across the length of the municipality, from Nine Palms and Shipwrecks on the East Cape to Costa Azul and Acapulquito in San José del Cabo, Playa Monumento near Cabo San Lucas and Pacific Coast standouts like Los Cerritos.
Zippers, one of a trio of surf breaks at Costa Azul, is the most iconic in the area, and the former site of the pro events Fletcher Los Cabos Classic and the Los Cabos Open of Surf. As a bonus, the nearby Middle Break is perfect for beginners. However, for great year-round surfing and rideability for all skill levels, the winner has to be Los Cerritos.
The best: Playa Los Cerritos (Pacific Coast) Honorable mention: Playa Costa Azul (San José del Cabo), Playa Monumento (Tourist Corridor)
Windsports
(Velas Resorts)
Those knowledgeable about local geography may note that Los Cerritos — my best surf beach — and Los Barriles on the East Cape — my top option for windsports — are not in Los Cabos but part of the neighboring La Paz municipality. For windsports, this is unavoidable, as the two places that benefit most from seasonal El Norte winds are Los Barriles and La Ventana, within the municipal boundaries of La Paz.
Each used to host a windsports competition — the former the Lord of the Wind Showdown, the latter the La Ventana Classic. Both are great for windsurfing, kiteboarding and kitesurfing from November through March, but Los Barriles is slightly better due to stronger and more consistent winds.
The best: Playa Los Barriles (East Cape) Honorable mention: Playa Central in La Ventana
Volleyball

Thinking about recreating the famous volleyball scene from “Top Gun”? There are many great options in Los Cabos, starting with the Playa Hotelera in San José del Cabo, the long beachfront lined by many of the city’s best resorts, including volleyball-friendly ones like Royal Solaris and Hyatt Ziva. Meanwhile, Médano Beach is the go-to playa for setting and spiking enthusiasts in Cabo San Lucas, with several nets typically set up along its two-mile length.
The best: Playa Hotelera (San José del Cabo) Honorable mention: Playa El Médano
Drinking and dining
(Corazón Cabo)
Playa El Médano, the biggest and most popular beach in Cabo San Lucas, has by far the most drinking and dining options, including restaurants on the beach like The Office, Mango Deck, The Sand Bar and SUR Beach House; and those overlooking it, like the spectacular Rooftop 360 at Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa. However, there are other options, too. Zipper’s Bar and Grill on Playa Costa Azul in San José del Cabo is a longtime local favorite, as is Tacos & Beer on Playa Cabo Pulmo.
The best: Playa El Médano Honorable mention: Playa Costa Azul, Playa Cabo Pulmo
Of course, these aren’t the only activities available. Los Cabos is a paradise for lovers of almost every outdoor pastime imaginable — at least those that don’t involve cold weather.
Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, as evidenced by its inclusion in several categories above, is the best place to go for an abundance of options — from sunning and swimming to volleyball, parasailing, flyboarding, jet skiing and more.
It’s also a great place to walk your dog, although you’ll have to steer clear of the scattered Blue Flag portions of the beach, where pets aren’t permitted.

The state middle school track and field championships, held May 30 at UVM’s track in Burlington, were renamed in honor of Nathan Suter, who died on May 13, and who had been instrumental in nurturing Montpelier’s middle and high school track programs and the state middle school meet itself.
