Fantasy baseball

Lowe’s first full season in 2023 showed you his potential, but injuries and inconsistency at the plate derailed his 2024 follow-up as a strained oblique and fractured pinkie limited him to just 106 games where he hit just .241 with diminished power and a strikeout rate of nearly 32 percent.

Both players fizzled after their initial hype, but their underlying skills suggest they could be steals in drafts this year.

The stat line was solid but fell short of the hype that pegged him as a five-category contributor.

At 27, Lowe’s athleticism remains his calling card.

For 2025, two outfielders stand out as prime candidates to rebound and achieve the coveted 20-home run, 20-stolen base stat line: Josh Lowe of the Tampa Bay Rays and Nolan Jones of the Colorado Rockies.

In fantasy baseball, the allure of post-hype sleepers is irresistible.

These are players who arrived with lofty expectations, stumbled out of the gate, but still possess the tantalizing tools to deliver a breakout season.

His sprint speed ranks in the 90th percentile, making 20 steals well within reach if he stays healthy.

The power is there too — his max exit velocity sits above 112 mph, and now that he’s playing his home games at minor league Steinbrenner Field, home runs shouldn’t be a problem.

Lowe’s issue has been contact; his 31 percent strikeout rate in 2023 screamed regression.

Yet, his minor league track record shows a hitter capable of cutting down on whiffs.

If he can get that strikeout rate closer to 25 percent, the Rays’ willingness to let him run and his spot in a sneaky-good lineup could unlock a 20/20 season.

Jones, meanwhile, arrived in Colorado with sky-high expectations after a 2022 trade from Cleveland.

The thin air of Coors Field and his raw power had fantasy managers salivating.

In 2023, he delivered 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, but a .297 batting average masked underlying concerns.

Injuries struck again in 2024, and his production cratered — three homers and five steals across 79 games with a .227 average.

Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting

The strikeouts spiked (31 percent), and the batting average on balls in play (.289) suggested some bad luck. At 26, Jones still has the tools that made him a prospect darling.

His 6-foot-4 frame generates easy plus-power, and his 88th percentile sprint speed fuels his potential base stealing.

Coors remains a cheat code for hitters, inflating fly balls into homers and gap shots into doubles.

Jones’ plate discipline needs refinement, but his 2023 breakout wasn’t a fluke—it was a glimpse of his ceiling.

A full, healthy season could see him reclaim that 20/20 form.

Both Lowe and Jones fit the post-hype mold: tantalizing skills, a disappointing detour, and a clear path to redemption.

Fantasy managers should target them late in drafts, banking on health and opportunity.

Lowe’s speed-power combo thrives in Tampa’s aggressive system, while Jones’ Coors advantage keeps his floor high.

Neither will cost a premium after their stumbles, but both could deliver top 50 outfielder value.

In a game of upside bets, these two are worth the roll of the dice for a 20/20 payoff in 2025.

SEATTLE (WLUK) — Mitch Van Vooren signed Tuesday with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.

That’s according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who cited Van Vooren’s agent in a social media post.

Van Vooren is an alum of Peshtigo High School. After graduation, he attended Marquette University on a Division I track and field scholarship. During his four-year career with the Golden Eagles, Van Vooren set the school record in the 400-meter hurdles.

But despite his collegiate success, Van Vooren always knew his real passion was football — so he decided to give his dream at reaching the NFL a shot.

“Even at Marquette, I thought this was my end goal. I always wanted to be in the NFL and compete at the highest level,” Van Vooren told FOX 11 Sports’ Cody Krupp in an April interview.

The 6’5″, 245-pound athletic standout came to St. Norbert College in De Pere to join the Green Knights’ football squad as a tight end, while also competing in track and field. He finished his two seasons with 13 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards, earning First Team All-Conference honors in 2024.

Van Vooren received a local pro day invitation from the Green Bay Packers. He went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, but was invited to attend the Cleveland Browns’ rookie minicamp.

Now, he’s been signed to the Seattle Seahawks’ 90-man roster. If Van Vooren stays with the team long enough, he could have the opportunity to play at Lambeau Field, when Seattle heads to Green Bay for a preseason matchup with the Packers.

TAMPA, Fla. (June 3, 2025)  Michael Kelly, vice president for athletics at the University of South Florida, has accepted the position of athletic director at the United States Naval Academy.

Since joining USF in 2018, Kelly has overseen a period of significant growth and achievement within USF Athletics. Under his leadership, the department expanded to 21 varsity sports with the addition of women’s lacrosse and beach volleyball. The Bulls captured 21 American Athletic Conference team championships, including firsts in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and men’s track and field. USF Athletics programs also achieved two divisional titles, two NCAA championships, eight cheer national championships and one cheer world cup, while more than two dozen student-athletes were named All-Americans. USF Athletics also earned more than 30 NCAA postseason berths during his tenure.

“This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came along at a time that feels right for me and my family,” said Kelly. “This decision isn’t about leaving South Florida—it’s about the chance to serve a place that’s long been meaningful to me. I’m deeply proud of what we’ve built together here and incredibly grateful for the relationships, achievements, and momentum that will continue to carry USF forward. I am confident that with this team—and in alignment with the university—even better days lie ahead for the Bulls.”

Michael Kelly is a servant leader who has always put others and the greater good of our USF community above himself,” said USF Board of Trustees Chair Will Weatherford. “Having known MK for well over a decade, I can definitively say that he is a coach of coaches, a man who gives credit and accepts responsibility, and that he will serve the U.S. Naval Academy and our nation with distinction.”

USF student-athletes shined academically, maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or higher for 21 consecutive semesters under Kelly’s leadership. The department also improved its average Graduation Success Rate to a program record of 88 percent in the most recent report, up one percentage point from the previous high.

“USF Athletics and our student-athletes have excelled under Michael Kelly‘s tenure,” said USF President Rhea Law. “Michael has supported our students, coaches, alumni and fans like a family, and that culture of success is among the highlights of his legacy here as a leader within Bulls Nation. We are grateful for his service and wish him continued success at the U.S. Naval Academy.”

Under Kelly’s leadership, the athletic department nearly doubled its budget to $100 million and secured more than $100 million in philanthropic gifts. He oversaw major facility projects, including plans for the new $348.5 million on-campus stadium and training center set to open in 2027, the $22 million Porter Family Indoor Performance Facility, and a $3 million football locker room renovation.

“MK has forever changed our campus and our community for the better, and I am proud to call him my friend and to have worked with him to move USF Athletics forward,” said USF Foundation CEO Jay Stroman, who has co-chaired the stadium project planning committee with Kelly. “Bulls Nation is stronger thanks to his efforts, and we wish him and the Kelly family nothing but the best in Annapolis.”

In 2024, Front Office Sports named USF Athletics to the inaugural “Best College Athletic Departments” list.

Kelly’s leadership was also instrumental in securing high-profile football matchups against national powerhouses such as Alabama and Miami, elevating the university’s national profile. He spearheaded the development of a comprehensive master facilities plan, which included the advancement of the on-campus stadium project and reestablished the USF Athletic Hall of Fame to honor the university’s athletic history.

President Law has asked Stroman to serve as interim vice president for athletics, in addition to continuing as senior vice president for advancement and alumni affairs and USF Foundation CEO. He has more than 20 years of successful institutional advancement experience and a proven track record for building strong relationships with USF’s alumni and community supporters. Stroman has played a key role and worked alongside Kelly in the planning for USF’s on-campus stadium over the past four years, including raising more than $40 million for the project. At all of his institutions, including most recently at the University of Georgia prior to joining USF, Stroman worked closely with athletics on new fundraising initiatives, operational strategy and facility enhancements. He also played college basketball at Mercer University and spent five years there as an assistant men’s basketball coach.

Additional details regarding the search for Kelly’s permanent successor will be announced at a later time.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the first time since 2006-07, Santa Clara Athletics has won the West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup – an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league’s top performing school in conference play.

Dating back to the 2001-02 school year, the Commissioner’s Cup has become an annual tradition celebrating WCC athletic excellence. The award is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men’s and women’s point totals is honored with the prestigious award.

“What an incredible honor it is to win the 2024-25 WCC Commissioner’s Cup,” said Director of Athletics, Heather M. Owen. “This is a testament to our University and its unwavering support of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, to our athletics department, and to those who have worn the Bronco uniform. Earning this season’s Commissioner’s Cup acknowledges our relentless pursuit of excellence both on and off the field. I am thrilled for our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and supporters, and I am thankful for our Santa Clara community and all that it does to support our department.”

This is just the third time in program history that Santa Clara has been awarded the Commissioner’s Cup. In addition to 2006-07, the Broncos also won the cup for the 2004-05 school year.

Santa Clara’s men’s and women’s programs had an outstanding 2024-25 campaign across the board. The year began with the women’s soccer program capturing their 14th WCC Championship and was book ended with the Bronco softball team winning the WCC Championship for the first time in program history.  Men’s tennis tied for second in the regular season WCC standings while the beach volleyball program won three consecutive matches in the WCC Tournament to advance to the championship match for the first time in program history. Both the men’s and women’s golf programs finished third at the WCC Championships.

Santa Clara accumulated 85.98 points to edge out Pepperdine (84.43) for the 2024-25 Commissioner’s Cup. The Broncos finished second for the Women’s All-Sport Award and was third for the Men’s All-Sport Award. The full final standings are below.
