Brady Tkachuk said even with loss, playoff experience good for Ottawa Senators | Sports News

OTTAWA – For the first time in eight years the Ottawa Senators head into the offseason not questioning what went wrong but reflecting on what finally went right.

Ottawa (45-30-7) saw its hard work pay off, finishing the regular season in the first wild-card spot to earn a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs. While the Senators lost their first-round series to the Toronto Maple Leafs in six games, it’s also a sign of progress that they’re trending in the right direction.

The Senators can now start thinking about what comes next. With a core led by captain Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle, a maturing defence and solid goaltender in Linus Ullmark, Ottawa heads into the summer focused on building off this year’s success.

Tkachuk said expectations will be different now that Ottawa accomplished its first goal.

“It’s everybody wants to win, and I think that’s where the disappointment comes in,” he said. “You know you want to win the Stanley Cup, and to not accomplish that it’s just going to create disappointment.

“But we’ll take that, use that as fire, use that as fuel and be ready to go next year and not stop until it happens.”

Many players reflected on how valuable getting first-hand exposure to playoff hockey was and seeing how the game intensifies.

“I think the experience we just lived, losing against Toronto in the playoffs is really going to help our team improve,” said defenceman Thomas Chabot. “We all learned a lot living the experience for the first time.

“I think we’re all going to come back next season even more prepared to take things to the next level.”

Among the players to elevate their game was defenceman Tyler Kleven, who’s set to become an unrestricted free agent. The 23-year-old had two assists in the series but was an imposing physical force on the back end.

“I loved it,” said Kleven. “It was so much fun to be out there and I could play my physical style … I thought it fit my style of play.”

One area that stood out for a number of players was the importance of faceoffs.

Stutzle, Shane Pinto and Dylan Cozens all spoke about wanting to improve their performance in the faceoff circle and the value of veteran Claude Giroux.

Giroux could be counted on when a defensive faceoff win was needed or for a key faceoff on the power play.

“I think I can speak for everyone on the team, we are really lucky to have him,” said Stutzle. “I’ve been really lucky to have him for all those years now.”

Cozens spoke about how valuable it was to ask Giroux for tips or tricks if he was struggling in a game.

Giroux is one of seven players set to become an unrestricted free agent. Giroux said while he hasn’t given much thought to his future or had any conversations with GM Steve Staios, he added how much he’s enjoyed his past three years in Ottawa.

“I love the players, the fans, the city,” said Giroux. “This year was the most fun I’ve had in a few years.”

Giroux, 32, believes he still has a lot to offer and can remain an impact player. More importantly, he believes the best is yet to come for the Senators.

A decision will also need to be made on Adam Gaudette, another unrestricted free agent.

The 28-year-old worked on establishing himself as a full-time NHL player. He played up and down the lineup this season and finished with 19 goals and 26 points while adding a goal and two assists in the playoffs.

“I think I proved a lot of people wrong and turned a lot of heads,” said Gaudette, who believes he’s elevated his stock. “And, you know, that’s my game right there is playing hard and being able to produce in a bottom six role.”

Tkachuk divulged he was dealing with an ongoing hip issue that originated at the Four Nations tournament. He also had an upper-body issue he chose not to reveal.

Tkachuk has opted against playing at the world championships in favour of recovery. Jake Sanderson also turned down Team USA.

Chabot won’t be going either, while Stutzle remains undecided about representing Germany. Ullmark was not asked to play for Sweden.

Nick Jensen, who had a visible limp, would not disclose what he’s dealing with but didn’t rule out the need for surgery. Drake Batherson declined the opportunity to speak to media.

Leeds United, Glasgow Rangers the Focus for 49ers Enterprises

Leeds United is pushing toward a crucial summer. The newly crowned Championship champions have been promoted back into the English Premier League, a move that comes with an influx of cash.

The Whites, who posted a $81 million financial loss last season, are expected to receive multimillion-dollar escalators from their commercial deals with partners, such as the deal with front-of-shirt sponsor and minority shareholder Red Bull. The sponsorship deal with the energy drink company signed last year was the biggest in Championship history.

Leeds will also receive additional cash thanks to the increase in media rights revenue that comes with a Premier League promotion. The West Yorkshire club—which has a slew of athlete investors, from NBA guard Russell Westbook to golf star Jordan Spieth—is guaranteed a minimum of $265 million in broadcast money alone over the next three years regardless of next season’s outcome, according to The Athletic.

The incoming cash comes at a good time after the club watched its revenue dip more than 30% after being relegated to Championship two years ago in large part due to reductions in broadcast money and central distribution payments.

49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, fully took over ownership of the club from Italian businessperson Andrea Radrizzani in 2023. The 49ers originally bought a 15% minority stake in Leeds in 2018 and steadily increased their stake over the years until completion two years ago. Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe looks to put his stamp on the club after previously serving as a board member and vice chairman under Radrizzani.

“The last time [Leeds was] in Premier League, I was a passenger on a plane that I was watching fly into a mountain,” Marathe said in a video interview. “I got for myself a nice playbook on what not to do. Before you can succeed, you have to learn what you need to avoid.”

Leeds, which regularly sells out home games, has nearly 28,000 people on its waiting list for season tickets and continues to look for ways to address the high demand from its supporters. The club is hoping the promotion bodes well in fundraising efforts and ongoing talks with city officials to greenlight a potential renovation to Elland Road Stadium that calls for expanding seating at the 37,000-seat stadium by at least 15,000 seats.

“We’re just starting to scratch the surface of what we can do,” Marathe said. “It’s not just about making money for making money’s sake. It’s about making money to spend it on players and get better. This will never be a dividend game.”

49ers Enterprises is dedicating resources to Leeds now after dedicating significant resources to the NFL team over the past several years. Though the Niners missed the playoffs this past season, the team remains engaged in contract extension talks starting quarterback Brock Purdy, for example, while other 49ers executives and staffers lend their time and expertise to help with Leeds.

“It actually enables us to run it back,” Marathe said. “We did it at the 49ers over the last 15 years with (opening) Levi’s Stadium and building back the football side of (things). Now it’s an opportunity to run it back with Leeds.”

49ers Enterprises is expanding its reach, as it is joining a U.S. consortium slated to finalize a controlling stake in coming months to take over the Glasgow-based Rangers FC, which competes in Scotland’s top division. The Scottish soccer giants, who have a league record 55 titles, are the latest project for the 49ers brain trust. The impending transaction will continue the ongoing wave of American investors aiming to resurrect storied teams and lower-tier clubs across Europe.

“We view it as three uncut diamonds,” Marathe added. “We’ve polished up the 49ers, and now on the path to doing it with Leeds, and there’s another opportunity there with Rangers.”

LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the second day in the row Cal Poly and Long Beach State’s pitchers threw up zero after zero, and for the second straight day the Beach came up with the big hit in support, this time coming from Brooklyn Lee to pick up Eryka Gonzales on senior day in a 1-0 win to finish the regular season.

Kate Judy was outstanding against for Cal Poly (9-38, 4-23 Big West), throwing six innings and giving up just one unearned run, but Long Beach State (27-20, 17-10) had an outstanding day of their own in the circle, putting together a second straight shutout to finish off the season on a six-game winning streak.

Shannon Haddad worked around trouble for the first two innings, and then turned the ball over to another senior in Eryka Gonzales, who allowed just three hits the rest of the way with three strikeouts and no walks in an outstanding pitching performance.

Long Beach State left nine on base throughout the day, but cashed in a huge run in the sixth inning. Rebekah Durazo reached on an error before turning over running duties to Sophia Stein. After a sacrifice, Brooklyn Lee entered as a pinch hitter and slapped a single to right field, bringing home Stein for the only run of the game.

Gonzales quickly retired the Mustangs in order in the seventh to get her second win of the weekend, improving to 6-2 in Big West play.

Long Beach State has secured a spot in the Big West Championship, and will play in the first round on Wednesday, May 7 as the action gets started in the inaugural tournament for the conference. Seeding and times will be announced following the conclusion of all games this weekend.
