Man pleads guilty in King County crash that killed woman, 3 children

Chase Jones is set to be sentenced April 25 after pleading guilty in the crash that killed Andrea Hudson, Matilda and Eloise Wilcoxson and Buster Brown.

KING COUNTY, Wash. — A man who hit and killed four people and injured two others in a crash in King County in 2024 has pleaded guilty on all felony counts.

Chase Jones, 19, pleaded guilty Thursday to four counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault.

Jones was previously charged with reckless driving, but that was not part of the plea. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said Jones’ sentence would not have increased with a guilty plea on that misdemeanor based on state sentencing guidelines.

Andrea Hudson, 38; Matilda Wilcoxson, 13; Eloise Wilcoxson, 12; and Boyd “Buster” Brown, 12, were killed in the crash on March 19, 2024, near Southeast 192nd Street and 140th Avenue Southeast in Fairwood. Two other children, a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old, were injured in the crash.

Hudson was carpooling five children when Jones ran a red light and smashed into Hudson’s minivan, according to charging documents.

Witnesses told police Jones was speeding and weaving around traffic before the crash. Data from Jones’ car show he was traveling 112 miles per hour through the red light when he crashed into Hudson’s vehicle. The posted speed limit in the area is 40 mph.

Ted Smith, Hudson’s father, said he was glad Jones pleaded guilty and that it saved all of the families “a lot of grueling turmoil going through a trial.”

“I don’t think we really feel any closure. They’re gone. Everyone’s life is broken, [Jones] as well. So no, I don’t feel closure, but it’s been over a year so it’s good this can progress and be dealt with,” said Smith. “Hopefully it can be a message that we can’t tolerate this.”

Smith said his two grandchildren who were also involved in the crash are making strong recoveries.

Charging documents show Jones was involved in two serious crashes in the year before the Fairwood collision. In both cases, Jones totaled his car after speeding.

Jones is set to be sentenced April 25.

The King County prosecutor’s office said sentencing ranges for vehicular homicide (reckless manner) range from 17 years and six months to 23 years and four months for offenders with a score of 10, which Jones has. The sentences would run concurrently.

Since the crash, family and friends have pushed for change at the state level to prevent something like it from happening again. State representatives passed House Bill 1596 last month, which would mandate devices that limit a driver from going more than 10 mph over the speed limit in cases of a court order or a probationary period after a suspended driver’s license. The bill is currently making its way through the Senate.

“We wanted to get something good out of this,” said Smith. “From what I can tell, there hasn’t been any substantive opposition to it. We’re hopeful.”

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 2 Discount Tire Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Qualified 3rd)

“I definitely had a high-commitment lap there. A lot of pressure on one corner, with three and four being wide open. I felt like this would be a good shot for pole for us after practice with the strengths of the Dark Horse Ford Mustang. I don’t know what the margin is, but I feel like I left a pole lap out there. I sent it into Turn 1 and didn’t quite get to the bottom and didn’t quite maximize my exit. I guess I can be happy with where we are at, but I definitely feel like you want to do it all. We are in a great spot for tomorrow and should have a good pit stall, so I feel good about where we are at for tomorrow. We will try to go get another one.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR CHANCES TOMORROW?

“I think our guys have done a really great job at Team Penske of giving us really fast Mustangs on these intermediate tracks and applying what we have learned from last year and early this year to today. It will be a big test for tomorrow but so far we have checked a lot of those boxes.”

JOSH BERRY, No. 21 Wurth Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Qualified 7th)

“It has been a good day. I thought our car was pretty solid in practice. I felt good about the qualifying lap. It is so high-commitment here that it is hard to tell if you left just a little bit out there. It is always so close. All in all, it is going to be a good starting spot for tomorrow so I am excited to get out there and get racing.”

Zak Brown Claims Credit for Opening NASCAR and NFL’s Doors for Liquor Sponsorship: “This Put Me on the News”

Liquor companies often draw the short straw when it comes to public advertising and sponsorships. Today, most ventures are inherently hesitant to offer an open platform for liquor and spirit brands to showcase their messaging. While surrogate marketing has become standard practice in the industry, these brands have typically missed out on major sports sponsorships.

However, there was light at the end of the tunnel, as Zak Brown took a massive leap of faith on this front. There were restrictions on spirits being advertised in North American sports, but Brown and his company Just Marketing International changed the landscape by bringing Crown Royal into NASCAR in the early 2000s.

This wasn’t a straightforward deal. The McLaren CEO knew that federal law didn’t allow advertising of liquor brands in sports leagues, which is why he had to approach legislators in Washington D.C. to make some amends.

In a recent feature interview with ESPN, Brown shed light on how the sponsorship with Crown Royal not only opened the doors for liquor brands in NASCAR, but also paved the way for their presence in the NFL and MLB.

“This went to Washington. This put me on the news. This was a big deal. And now today, the reason NFL has spirits, MLB has spirits, it changed the landscape of spirit advertising and sponsorship in all of North America,” the American businessman said.

The work Brown put in to drive this change was truly game-changing. Brands like Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, and Crown Royal have become regular sponsors in the NFL. Meanwhile, Casamigos, Jameson, Distill Brands, and Grey Goose have also taken active steps toward sponsoring MLB and its teams — all thanks to Brown’s bold initiative that set the wheels in motion.

Since taking charge of McLaren Racing and its global motorsport programs in 2018, the 53-year-old has become a prominent figure in the racing world. Beyond Formula 1, Brown also oversees the British brand’s efforts in IndyCar, Formula E, and Extreme E.

The F1 team, in particular, has experienced a dramatic rise from the doldrums over the past seven years. When Brown joined, McLaren were backmarkers in the pecking order and teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

However, the American’s sharp marketing acumen has sparked a renaissance at the Woking outfit—both on and off the track. While McLaren steadily improved to become a race-winning team and eventually clinched the Constructors’ Championship in 2024, their financial health also rebounded significantly.

Sporting a fresh identity with the iconic papaya color scheme, McLaren now boasts the highest number of sponsors on the current grid. Brown has played a key role in sustaining on-track success to retain existing partners while continually onboarding new brands, paving the way for a stable and prosperous long-term future in motorsport.

PROCTOR, Minn. (Northern News Now) – With the dirt drying up around the Northland, many motorists are getting ready to send that dirt flying.

Proctor Speedway is getting ready to celebrate 75 years of racing with opening night just over a week away.

“I’ve seen a lot of great racers come and go. Proctor has been a very well-organized track, but sometimes we get a little off track,” said President Mike Donnahue with a laugh.

Donnahue is like the many Northlanders who prefer to spend their weekends at the track.

Beginning Sunday, May 11, there are races held almost every Sunday until September with promotional nights like meet the racers, vintage night, and more.

“It’s fun, I’ve had a great time, but it’s time to pass the torch, it’s time to get the young people involved,” said Donnahue.

The group gathered at the Proctor Moose Lodge to share memories of the past while looking ahead to the future.

“As one of the youngest guys up here, I look forward to seeing the 100th and the 125th and try to take what they all did and make it better,” said Board Member Jakob White.

It helps with active racers like 22-year-old Paul Ripley, who has been crowned back-to-back champion in the Wissota Modifieds Class.

“Proctor is kind of a legacy track,” said Ripley. “They have the Silver 1000 every year, and that’s the second longest running event around, so it’s kind of a crown jewel race that people want to go win, it draws people there.”

In hopes of drawing even more people into the sport of racing, the community has come together to provide opportunities like the Lake Superior RC Club and the soon-to-be returning karting at Black River Motorsports Park.

“We’re bringing back the go-karts, we’re racing on dirt. We’re just pushing to bring more kids back into racing, and if we don’t start young, then we’re not going to get them to go back to Superior and Proctor, all the local tracks,” said Donnie Lofdahl.

And for a racer like Lofdahl, there’s nothing better than seeing his son following in his tracks.

“He’s gonna be six here and it’s his second year racing and we’re just all in on it,” said Lofdahl.

But no matter where you go to get revved up this year, you know one thing will be the same.

“It’s always exciting cause I mean every week is different, so you never know what you’re going to run into,” said Donnahue. “So, hopefully for 75 years we can have some surprises, have some fun, and go fast and turn left.”
