No. 2 Cal Caps Unblemished Weekend
Bears Sweep 13 Races At Cal/Stanford Invitational
REDWOOD SHORES – The No. 2 California men’s rowing team finished the weekend a perfect 13-0 in its duel races at the Cal/Stanford Invitational at the Redwood Shores on Sunday morning. The freshmen 8+ and 4V8+ defeated crews from No. 20 UC San Diego while the 3V8+ and 5V8+ beat boats from Santa Clara. The V8+ and 2V8+ did not race today.
In the Golden Bears’ first race of the day had the Cal freshmen 8+ matchup against the UCSD V8+. Cal took a bow to stern lead within the first 150 meters of the race which quickly grew to two boats of open water by the 500-meter mark. The Bears didn’t let up and continued to pull away to win the race in a time of 5:41.9.
“Everything went according to plan against some good competition,” Cal assistant coach Brandon Shald said. “We wanted to produce some quick times and I think the freshmen group did that. We have a couple more gears to go and we’re going to need it.”
Cal’s 3V8+ went up against the Santa Clara V8+. Cal built a half-boat lead after the first 20 strokes. The lead quickly grew to open water by 500 meters. By the time the Bears hit the halfway mark, they were ahead by two boats of open water. Cal won in a time of 5:47.5.
In the race between Cal’s 4V8+ and UCSD’s 2V8+, Cal took a half-boat lead after the first 15 strokes which grew to bow to stern 500 meters in. The Bears kept pressing and went ahead by two boats of open water by the halfway point. Cal won in 5:48.8.
The Bears’ final race of the morning pit Cal’s 5V8+ against Santa Clara’s 2V8+. It was fairly even through the first 15 strokes, before the Bears were able to push away taking a bow to stern lead at the 500-meter mark. By the time the boats hit the halfway mark, Cal was ahead by a little over a boat of open water. The Bears gradually increased their lead to two boats of open water over the second half of the race and won in a time of 5:57.5.
“We talked this year about being able to impose the depth of the group and had a commitment from everybody to maximize their own ability,” Cal associate head coach Sam Baum said. “Next man up can either be a slogan or how you operate. I think the 3V and 4V operated at a high level and had some people step into it who hadn’t been racing or hadn’t been training consistently with other groups. I was pleased with how those guys were able to step up into it and ultimately it will matter most in the coming races.”
