Aussies power push for Paralympic golf in Brisbane 2032

Mixed teams will be added to the individual stroke play events at the 2028 LA Games, with Australia’s top-two men and women joining forces to hunt for three golf gold medals.

It opens up the possibility of Min Woo and Minjee Lee playing together for Australia, after they had competed individually in the green and gold in Paris last year.

Speaking after his first round at the Masters, Min Woo said the prospect of a Lee super-team was “very cool”.

“That would be awesome. I would love to team up with her and give it all we got,” he said.

GA boss James Sutherland acknowledged the Lee siblings were playing a huge role in “the changing face of golf”.

“It’d be a nice storyline leading in and it’s 50 percent more chance of getting another medal,” he told AAP at Augusta National on Friday.

“We want golf to be seen as a sport for all and a teams event with men and women together, it sends a great message about golf as a sport.

“The best players truly inspire … it moves the nation and Min particularly with his fan engagement, makes the game very relatable.”

Pleased with the International Golf Federation’s efforts to negotiate an expansion of the Games program that returned in 2016, Sutherland now has his sights set on the Paralympic movement.

Golf’s entry is expected to be denied for the LA Paralympics, with GA targeting Brisbane’s 2032 edition.

The sport’s catch-all classification is understood to be a sticking point with the IOC, who seek stricter classes.

There are also competing organisations that need to find alignment, the IGF now tasked with lassoing those bodies and finding common ground with the IOC.

Any advice will be taken ahead of this year’s Australian All Abilities Championship, which will no longer be part of a combined event with the men’s and women’s Australian Opens.

“There’s been frustrations but I don’t know how hard the push has been,” Sutherland told AAP of efforts for Paralympic inclusion.

“So from our perspective, we want it to be at the Brisbane Paralympics, so what decisions do we make now to get us there?

“We’ll take advice and start pushing the case.”
