Lindbergh soccer eyes postseason push

The Lindbergh High School girls soccer team notched a statement win on April 14, shutting out Union 2-0 behind a dominant performance from sophomore standout Kasey Patten. Patten netted both goals—one in each half—leading the Flyers to victory. She now has three goals on the season for Lindbergh.

The Flyers’ defense also shone against Union, with Mackenzie Bieg and Josie Watz combining efforts in goal to secure the clean sheet. It was the third win of the season for Lindbergh, who had previously defeated Seckman and Jackson on March 25 and April 7, respectively.

With the win against Union, Lindbergh improved to 3-5-1 on the year. As of April 24, Lindbergh sits at 4-8-1.

Despite a losing record, the Flyers have been competitive in a challenging early-season schedule, suffering narrow losses to strong programs like Cor Jesu, losing 1-2, and Rockwood Summit, losing 0-1. Though the opposition has been stiff, Lindbergh head coach Jake Pittroff emphasized the importance of testing his squad against elite competition.

“We’ve been competitive and played in some really tough games. I think we are starting to put things together and play better.” Pittroff said. “I’m a big believer that a team has to be built by playing the best. In order to be the best, you have to beat the best.”

With the postseason looming, Pittroff hopes the rigorous schedule will pay dividends.

“I think the tough schedule helps us,” Pittroff said. “We are getting better technically and tactically. I also think our decision-making has improved, especially defensively.”

The team is led by captain Lauren Smith, who will continue her soccer career at Spring Hill College, a Division II school. Senior Kate Warren also provides leadership and experience, while Danni Cotter, who has tallied four points this season, is set to play at UMSL. Patten, as well as Gabby Moran, who has six points on the season, have emerged as key offensive catalysts.

With a daunting Class 4 district on the horizon, Pittroff remains realistic about the challenges ahead.

“It’s just a powerhouse,” Pittroff said. “It’s one tough district.”

As the Flyers continue to build both their tactical foundation and mental grit, Pittroff is optimistic about where this journey could lead.

“It’s a journey of learning,” he said. “The girls are building aptitude and mind skills, which are life skills they will need to be successful.”

The Flyers faced Notre Dame on April 16, winning 1-0. They next played Webster Groves on April 18, St. Joseph’s on April 21 and Layayette on April 22, losing the three games 0-3, 1-4 and 0-5, respectively.

Lindbergh will face Ursuline Academy on April 25 at 5:30 p.m.

LAKEWOOD — They were coming down the home stretch at the Colorado state track & field championship meet.

The annual track extravaganza reached a crescendo on May 17 as some of the most prominent racing events in the state took center stage.

Fort Collins-area teams emerged with a team title plus a pair of runner-up finishes. Meanwhile, a Windsor sprinter swept a pair of 4A dash championships and led the Wizards to a relay win, joining Fossil Ridge.

Here’s how day three of state track & field went for Fort Collins-area athletes, plus some notable scores and results for Northern Colorado and statewide competitors.

Fossil Ridge clinches 5A team title

The SaberCats will be champions! There’s still one event to go, but the Fossil Ridge girls team has run away from the field to clinch the 5A team title.

It’s the first track title in Fossil Ridge’s school history and the first Fort Collins team to win a 5A track title since 2016.

The MSTCA state relays continued Saturday with the Division 3 and Division 4 meets, with Division 1 (New Bedford) and Division 5 (North Reading) following on Sunday. There was also a healthy slate of baseball games, several walkoff wins, and a big women’s basketball commitment.

First, the roundups: Scoreboard | Baseball | Softball | Boys’ lacrosse | Girls’ lacrosse | Girls’ tennis | Boys’ tennis

1. Milestones

It was a quiet day on the milestone front, but North Reading sophomore Cara Ward did notch her 100th career save in a 14-3 win over Latin Academy, while Stoughton freshman Joe Toupin made 10 saves in a 15-7 loss to Southeastern to put him over 250 for the season.

2. Walkoff wins

There were plenty of these, most notably senior Kelsey Blanchette’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh for Lincoln-Sudbury brought an end to a scoreless pitcher’s duel against Silver Lake. Blanchette’s walkoff blast gave No. 5 L-S a 1-0 win over No. 2 Silver Lake, which had won 12-0 in their April 25 matchup. Blanchette was also one-half of that pitching duel, striking out nine.

Holy Cross-bound senior Brady MacCutchen delivered a walkoff hit to lift BB&N to a 4-3 win over Middlesex in the semifinals of the second division of the ISL Tournament.

On the lacrosse field, North Reading junior LSM Gavin Wesley recovered a turnover and raced down the field for a 9-8 overtime win over Methuen, and Lexington freshman Ethan Wang netted the OT winner in a 9-8 victory over Newton North.

3. Going, going, gone

In addition to Blanchette’s walkoff blast, Dighton-Rehoboth senior Emma Horrocks, a Holy Cross commit, sent one out, while Hanover senior Abby Hanna, who is committed to Johnson & Wales, launched a round-tripper for the fourth consecutive game.

HIGHLIGHTS

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WSAW) – UW-Stevens Point softball entered Titan territory and left with a regional championship, moving onto Super Regionals by taking down UW-Oshkosh through a pair of games.

In their first outing, Oshkosh needed a win to earn one last shot at the regional title. They’d ultimately live to see another game with a 5-2 victory. The Pointers made it a one run game after the 6th inning, but it wasn’t enough to move on without a win-or-go-home rematch.

Afterwards, game two went silent with four scoreless innings. Everything changed when Jesse Klicker sent a ball over the left field fence, driving in three major runs for Stevens Point. Oshkosh starting pushing back with Sarah Hammerton running home after a separate steal attempt was taken at second base.

But the Titans first run would be their last of game two, as the Pointers claimed a 3-1 victory to win their regional championship. Kodi Rizzo and Ashley Zygowski paired for successful outings on the mound for Stevens Point.

The overall effort helped the Pointers punch their first ever ticket to the D3 Super Regionals. They’re set to face off against Trine University on Thursday, May 22nd and Friday, May 23rd (times TBD) for a D3 World Series appearance.
