After losing its first game of the season Tuesday to Grand Blanc, Heritage was in danger of dropping back-to-back boys lacrosse matchups.

But the Hawks scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to earn an 8-7 win Thursday over Bay City Western and improve to 7-1 overall, 5-1 in the Saginaw Valley League.

Elden Wideman scored the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining, giving him four goals and an assist. John Ryan followed with one goal and five assists.

Kalen Hood-Davis and Favin Garcia led the defense with six grounds balls each, while John Larson had nine saves in net.

Baseball

Hemlock 5-3, Breckenridge 4-11: Tim Huston drove in the game-winning run to walk off the Game 1 victory for Hemlock at Dow Diamond, giving Blake Willman the win. Chad Brown led the offense with three hits, while DJ Lyscas added two hits. Noah Barr led Breckenridge with two hits, including a game-tying three-run triple in the sixth. Dylan Davenport added two hits. In the second game, Barr struck out six to earn the win after Breckenridge scored seven runs in the fifth inning. Braxton Clapp led Breckenridge with three hits and three runs.

Mount Pleasant 3-6, Heritage 2-13: Blake Stevens was a hard-luck loser for Heritage in the opener, giving up just four hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out seven. Brady Gotham had three hits for the Heritage offense. The Hawks rallied in Game 2 to earn the Saginaw Valley League split. Trevor Selk, who earned the win on the mound, had two hits and two RBIs, while Brady Boelter knocked in two runs and Gotham added a double.

Millington 6-7, Cass City 2-8: Millington earned a split in a Big Thumb showdown, with Truk TerBush throwing a complete game in the opener, striking out eight and allowing no earned runs for the Cardinals. Jacob Fluty led the offense with two hits. Cass City came back to outlast Millington in Game 2, winning in eight innings. Garret Woodward led the Cardinals with three hits, while Fluty and Luke Petzold added two hits each.

Chesaning 20-17, Byron 0-7: Max Volk earned the win in Game 1, striking out seven in four innings. Brady Sager led the offense with three hits, three RBIs, three runs and three stolen bases, with Volk adding two hits, including a homer. Eli Keck threw three innings and struck out three to earn the Game 2 win. Sager and Logan Vogelaar had three hits each for the Indians, with Volk, Adam Woodcock and Jacob Zyrowski adding two hits each.

Bullock Creek 15-9, Sanford Meridian 5-1: Palmer Richards struck out five in 5 1/3 innings to earn the Bullock Creek win in the opener. Caden Tate led the offense with two hits, including a homer, and three RBIs, while Braden Swanson and Hunter Habitz added two hits each. Mason Strayer had four RBIs. In the second game, Jaxon Flowers struck out eight and allowed one unearned run for the win. Richards, Tate and Brandon Porcaro had two hits each for the 9-3 Lancers. Emerson Johnson, Connor Curtis and Porcaro had two RBIs each.

Caro 4-5, Reese 1-8: Xander Grice allowed three hits and no walks, striking out 14 to earn the win for Caro in Game 1. Owen Creutz had two hits to lead the Caro offense, with Max Grice adding a hit, RBI, run and walk. The Tigers gave up seven unearned runs in the Game 2 loss. Wyatt Waterman and Ramon Zamora Jr. led the offense with two hits each, with Zamora Jr. adding two walks. Max Grice drove in three runs.

Midland High 18-18, Saginaw United 0-0: Lucas Mankoff, Aydin VanEver, Charlie Sabin and Cooper Cummings had two hits each for Midland High in the opener, with Liam Heinz earning the win on the mound. In the second game, Wilson Kloha and Cummings knocked out three hits each, with Jacoby Lind knocking in four runs to give Cade Sanborn the win.

Coleman 8-15, Saginaw Arts & Sciences 3-2: Zayne Lytle had three hits and two RBIs to pace Coleman in the first game, with Kyler Young adding two hits and two RBIs. Parker Klopf struck out five in three innings for the win. Travis Murray, who earned the save in the opener, led the offense in Game 2 with three hits and five RBIs. Klopf added three walks and three runs as Asher Hess earned the win with nine strikeouts in five innings.

Valley Lutheran 12-12, St. Charles 0-5: Jacob Grimpo struck out nine in five innings for the Game 1 win. Ben Diener and Trey Flood had two hits each for Valley Lutheran, with Flood driving in two. Flood led the Chargers in the second game with three hits, including a double. Ryan Pittman earned the win, giving up no hits with six strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Tyler Belt also had three hits, with Peter Boyer adding two. Jacob Sutton led St. Charles with two RBIs.

Softball

St. Charles 10-12, Valley Lutheran 7-16: Olivia Parker earned the win in Game 2, salvaging a non-conference split for Valley Lutheran. Parker, who had four hits and two walks in the two games, struck out five. Kendell Klemish also had four hits with four walks and five RBIs. Sarah Boyer, who struck out six in the first game, added two hits and four RBIs. Elsie Hultberg walked six times.

Reese 3-10, Caro 0-2: Breelie Louis threw a shutout in Reese’s Game 1 win, allowing two hits and striking out 12. Sydney DuRussel and Grace Hall led the Reese offense with two hits. Kylie Soper allowed one hit with seven strikeouts to win the nightcap for the Rockets. Sadie Johnson led the offense with three hits and three RBIs each. Hall and Keira Campbell added two hits each for the Rockets, who blew the game open with eight runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Alma 13-11, Ionia 11-7: Sparks, who earned the Game 1 win, added two hits and four RBIs. Shaniya Simcox and Chloe Hallock led the offense with three hits each. In the nightcap, Sparks collected the save and added three hits and six RBIs. Reese Mueller also had three hits for Alma.

Goodrich 11-3, Midland 1-0: Jocelyn Rivard, Alayna Prany and Kailey Cassiday had hits in the opener for Midland High. Taylor Sequin threw a complete game in the nightcap for the Chemics, adding a hit..

Girls Soccer

Freeland 9, Alma 1: Cessaly Fichtner scored three goals in Freeland’s Tri-Valley Conference romp, with Reese Conlee adding two goals. Emily Lasceski, Audrey Mueller, Abbie Johnson and Mia Maxwell added single goals with assists going to Delany Seeburger, Rachel Maize, Conlee, Kelsey Sumption and Mueller.

Bullock Creek 3, Shepherd 0: Miraya Hunter and Claudia Moses scored to give Bullock Creek a 2-0 halftime lead, with Hunter assisting on Moses’ goal. Jenna Nelson added an insurance goal in the second half off an assist from Jillian Dast. Audrie Stoltenberg made four saves to record the shutout for the 3-2-3 Lancers.

Bad Axe 8, Millington 3: Millington scored three goals in the second half, with Savannah Bemiss scoring twice and EmmaLeigh Peters once. Ella Narruhn and Peters collected assists.

Boys Golf

Big Thumb Jamboree: Millington, ranked ninth in the state, claimed its second Big Thumb Jamboree title, carding a 159 to beat out Bad Axe with 177 and Caro with 178. Caro’s Cole Marcola earned medalist honors at Willow Springs Golf Club with a 31. Brad Coleman and Landon Germain shot 38s for the Cardinals, with Bryce Martin adding a 40.

Boys Track

Swan Valley 100, Bridgeport 28: Hunter Albrecht claimed wins in the 200 (:23.74) and 400 (:54.47) to lead Swan Valley to the Tri-Valley Conference win. Jamison Pelt added a win in the long jump (17-10) and Torrance McMurren in the 100 (:11.44), with both running legs on Swan Valley’s winning 400 relay. Jamareon Jones gave Bridgeport wins in the 110 hurdles (:16.57) and 300 hurdles (:44.18).

Girls Track

Swan Valley 78, Bridgeport 38: Reese Berry claimed a pair of wins for Swan Valley, taking first in the 1,600 (7:23.33) and 3,200 (15:23.78) in the Tri-Valley Conference win. Aubrey Hare won the 100 hurdles (:17.13) and Grace Spear took first in the 200 (:27.16), with both running legs on Swan Valley’s winning 400 relay.
