Was Justin Haley Responsible for Rodney Childers’ Exit from Spire Motorsports? NASCAR Driver Clears Air Around Decision

Spire Motorsports NASCAR Cup driver Justin Haley returned from NASCAR’s off-weekend last week ready for Sunday’s Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

But just a few hours after reporting back to work, Haley was shocked to learn that Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson had released Haley’s crew chief, Rodney Childers, from the team.

The move was odd, but also not completely surprising, either.

The odd part of it was that Childers, who joined Spire after Stewart-Haas Racing imploded at the end of last season, had just nine races in his now former role.

Having led Kevin Harvick to the 2014 Cup championship, Childers is tied for second in wins among active crew chiefs with Adam Stevens (each with 40 Cup wins). Paul Wolfe ranks first with 42 series wins.

You would have thought Childers would be given more time to jell with Haley, but Dickerson apparently felt otherwise.

Then there’s the not-so-surprising bit of the equation: Haley comes into Sunday’s race with zero wins, zero top-five and just one top-10 finish (Homestead), and a dismal 23rd in the NASCAR Cup standings.

Haley said he had no involvement in Childers’ firing.

“We had our normal Tuesday, 8 am meeting with the No. 7 team to see how we’d come here (Talladega) and try to win the race,” Haley said during media availability Saturday morning at the racetrack. “Then, after my meetings, I was notified (that Childers was let go).

“Yeah, it was unexpected, but to be honest with you, I don’t think anything in this sport surprises me anymore, so you have to deal with adversity and change.”

Haley, who turns 26 on Monday, is back for his second Cup stint with Spire. But unlike his previous go-round with the organization several years ago, the Spire team now is more focused and expects stronger performances than what it got in the past.

“Obviously, it’s an unexpected change and not something you ever want to do in the middle of a season, but super proud to be with a race team and owner like Jeff Dickerson that’s not scared to make changes for maybe the better,” Haley said. “It was a fit thing, I think Jeff said in his interview with The Athletic, nothing super wrong that stood out.

“At the end of the day, we’re in the Cup Series to compete, and on a Sunday in the Cup Series, everything has to be right. If one little thing isn’t right, you’re not going to win races.

“That’s what Spire (Motorsports) is trying to do. They’ve been putting so much time, effort and resources, money, ability, put people in the right places to try to win races. I don’t think they’re scared to do anything to win a race.”

Childers’ sacking is the second big surprise from the Spire camp in the last six months. Veteran driver Corey LaJoie, who had been a stalwart at Spire for the last several seasons and was expected to return for 2025, was instead let go at the end of the 2024 campaign (finishing a career-worst 33rd in the final standings didn’t help).

In an ironic twist, Haley came to Spire Motorsports for the 30th week of last season from Rick Ware Racing, for whom LaJoie is now racing in 2025.

Ryan Sparks, Spire’s competition director and LaJoie’s former crew chief, will be Justin Haley’s interim crew chief for the rest of this season.

Jeff Dickerson’s Statement On Childers’ Firing

“NASCAR is an ever-evolving sport and the path to improvement isn’t always comfortable,” Dickerson said in a statement. “The break in the Cup Series schedule gave us a chance to evaluate where we are as a program. We took the opportunity to discuss the best paths forward for everyone involved, and the team and Rodney agreed that it would be best for us to part ways.

“Rodney has worked at the highest level of our sport for 20 years, and he knows what it takes to win championships. With that in mind, we collectively acknowledged challenges with the team dynamic.”

“Having the right combination of talent is just as important as the results on track. As we move in a new direction, it is not lost on us that Rodney has been an invaluable asset to our organization, as he will continue to be for others in this sport,” elaborated Dickerson.

Childers took to X earlier this week to address his abrupt departure from Spire, which read in part:

“I know this is a shock. But also know that not everything works out perfect all the time. That’s how life works. This was just one of those things that just wasn’t working for either of us.

“I appreciate my time at Spire, working with JH (Haley) and the entire 7 team. We did a lot of good that is yet to be seen, and I wish them the best in the future.”

ICONIC TRACK RENAMED ECHOPARK SPEEDWAY

eps-primary-onlight.png

HAMPTON, Ga. (June 3, 2025) – Speedway Motorsports and EchoPark Automotive introduced the new identity of Georgia’s only NASCAR track today; the iconic, 66-year-old facility in Hampton, formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway, is now EchoPark Speedway.

Through a new partnership, the speedway – which hosts two NASCAR Cup Series races annually, including the upcoming June 28 Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart – will carry the EchoPark brand for the duration of a seven-year, multi-million-dollar agreement.

Specializing in pre-owned vehicle sales, EchoPark Automotive is one of three operating segments of Sonic Automotive, Inc., a Fortune 300 company and one of the largest automotive and powersports retailers in the United States. EchoPark Automotive operates 17 locations in 13 markets, including Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, where a majority of Atlanta NASCAR fans travel from each year to visit the historic speedway. From restart zone signage to fan zone activations and race entitlements, the pre-owned car dealership chain has leveraged resources across nine Speedway Motorsports facilities nationwide to activate its brand and reach race fans and potential new customers. Acquiring the naming rights to one of NASCAR’s most iconic tracks is the latest and biggest step in this strategy for EchoPark Automotive.

“We have enjoyed serving guests in the Atlanta metro area since EchoPark Atlanta opened its doors in 2020,” said David B. Smith, Chairman and CEO of Sonic Automotive. “This partnership allows us to share the value of the exceptional EchoPark car-buying experience with more guests in Atlanta and the surrounding area who enjoy the excitement of NASCAR racing at this iconic venue.”

EchoPark Automotive is seen as the number one pre-owned car buying experience, reflected in over 100,000 five-star reviews. Using this iconic sports venue, which is the largest in all of Georgia, will help EchoPark Automotive share the message of the brand to millions locally and nationally through major televised NASCAR events.

EchoPark Speedway’s entire 850-acre facility has undergone a massive facelift in preparation for its upcoming national debut as the opening race for the TNT portion of the NASCAR broadcast schedule and the kickoff event for the new in-season Cup Series tournament. Fans will see the new EchoPark Speedway’s signature green color and the new track logo across track walls, Victory Lane, and throughout the concourse when they attend the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart on Saturday night, June 28, or tune in nationally at 7 p.m. ET on TNT.

The winner of the race will also receive a “nearly new” EchoPark Chevy Silverado and a trailer equipped with an 85th Anniversary, Sturgis Motorcyle Rally Limited Edition Harley-Davidson motorcycle. These exclusive motorcycles can be pre-ordered now at SturgisHD.com, but the very first one of only 26 manufactured will go to the winner of the inaugural EchoPark Speedway race. This incredible prize will be presented to the winner in Victory Lane courtesy of EchoPark Automotive.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase the incredible vehicles we sell at EchoPark and share the exposure with another important entity in our Sonic Automotive family,” said Jeff Dyke, President of Sonic Automotive. “The Sturgis Rally is right around the corner, and we know NASCAR fans and drivers will not only love the new presentation of this track, but also the opportunity to see this limited edition Harley-Davidson presented in Victory Lane.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with an innovative, customer-focused company like EchoPark Automotive as the entitlement partner of our newly named EchoPark Speedway,” said Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith. “EchoPark Automotive is as committed to exceptional customer service as we are, and we know that together we’ll elevate our fan experience to a new level unmatched for Southern hospitality. This partnership will fuel great experiences for fans attending our speedway for years to come.”

EchoPark Speedway has a storied history in NASCAR, hosting races every year since it opened as Atlanta International Raceway in 1960. The speedway hosted NASCAR’s season finale from 1987-2000, including the epic conclusion of the 1992 campaign which saw “The King,” Richard Petty, compete in his last NASCAR race; future legend Jeff Gordon make his first NASCAR Cup Series start; and Georgia’s own Bill Elliott win the race – narrowly losing the title to underdog owner-driver Alan Kulwicki.

Racing enthusiasts have long celebrated EchoPark Speedway’s high-speed, close-quarters racing action and exhilaratingly close finishes. Since its reconfiguration to a 28-degree banked, superspeedway-style track in 2021, that reputation has only been further bolstered. Three- and four-wide racing with abundant lead changes have become the norm when NASCAR visits Atlanta. In February 2024, EchoPark Speedway saw the closest three-wide finish in NASCAR history with race winner Daniel Suárez eclipsing Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch by just 0.003 and 0.007 seconds, respectively. Earlier this year, a new record was set for most lead changes at the speedway. This month’s Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart is expected to continue that trend of thrilling NASCAR action in Atlanta.

EchoPark Speedway will host two NASCAR national touring series during the spectacular June 26-28 summer event. Schedules, tickets, and camping for the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart weekend, can be found online at www.EchoParkSpeedway.com.

WWE Looks More Like NASCAR As Slim Jim Sponsored Tables Are Introduced

I can already hear Pat McAfee:

“John Cena goes under the ring… and pulls out… the Slim Jim table, brought to you by everyone’s favorite Meat Sticks and Jerky – try their new hot BBQ flavor now in convenience stores everywhere!”

In a you-can’t-make-it-up, and almost parody-like situation, AdWeek has announced that the WWE and Slim Jim have extended their 2023 partnership that will now see the famous beef jerky both as a center-ring logo sponsor, as well as be featured on all “wrestling folding tables” for its Monday Night Raw, SmackDown and NXT events.

This is in addition to plenty of other sponsor logos and images around the once-fabled blue canvas wrestling ring, as the WWE continues to look more and more like a NASCAR driver’s race car every passing week. This has been the case ever since it’s new TKO partners took over majority control of the wrestling promotion as well as a massive Netflix deal that kicked off this past January.

“Extending our partnership during Monday Night RAW will give us even more opportunities to create unique and memorable experiences that tap into the rich history and energy of both Slim Jim and WWE,” said Ashley Spade, VP and GM of snacks at Conagra Brands.

Oh, it’ll be memorable alright, but a quick look at social media says that’s for all the wrong reasons.

Listen, as a huge and lifelong WWE fan who has worked for some of the biggest WWE and wrestling-related media entities, this stinks as much as a Slim Jim left out in your car on a 100-degree day.

Sure, I understand that the promotion’s parent company TKO Group Holdings, is primarily driven by bringing in as much revenue as possible, but when it cheapens and compromises the actual wrestling event you’re watching, then that’s frustrating.

Wrestling fans had better get ready for a ton of “table” matches in the near future. I wouldn’t be surprised if a wrestling match didn’t have a table included in it. “The beautiful sport we all loved is gone,” wrote one person on X, with literally hundreds following suit.

WWE COMES ACROSS AS NASCAR

But hey, at least you’ll be able to drink Logan Paul’s PRIME Drink – which is plastered all over WWE arenas these days, to help you wash down those Slim Jims!

As I previously wrote, the wrestling business and the WWE have changed tremendously in recent months, in large part due to Netflix as their Monday Night RAW program has fallen from over 5 million viewers to now anywhere from 2-3 million weekly in the United States.

As the Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase once said – “Everybody’s got a price!”

But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to come across as cringe.

FORT GREGG-ADAMS, Va. – The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) hosted NASCAR Xfinity Series team JR Motorsports (JRM) driver Justin Allgaier at its Fort Gregg-Adams Commissary in Virginia May 14.

During the visit, team sponsor Unilever joined Allgaier to unveil this year’s custom paint scheme bearing the commissaries’ logo on the hood of a full-sized simulator of the team’s No. 7 Chevrolet. Allgaier piloted the actual No. 7 Chevy in the BetMGM 300 race May 24 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, finishing fourth.

Unilever and JRM have worked with DeCA for more than a decade to publicize the commissary benefit, and in 2021 presented their first military-themed car sporting the DeCA logo.

During his commissary visit Allgaier praised the collaboration, noting his pride in carrying the logo on the track at Charlotte over Memorial Day weekend.

“It’s a way for us to honor the military community and thank them for their service and sacrifice,” Allgaier said.

The event offered Fort Gregg-Adams families and race fans a chance to sit behind the wheel of the replica car, while enjoying music, prize giveaways, face painting and free food samples sponsored by Unilever.

Allgaier signed autographs, posed for photos with attendees and spoke about what the commissaries’ logo on the hood meant to him.

“This is more than just a paint scheme,” he said. “It’s about recognizing the men and women who serve — and making sure they know they’re appreciated.”

DeCA Director and CEO John Hall noted that commissary sales were up over the last three years, and added that he believed the ancillary benefits provided by commissary suppliers like Unilever have helped spur that increase.

“This drives awareness and drives traffic, but more importantly, it communicates that patrons can come and get 25 percent savings inside the gate versus outside the gate,” Hall said. “And on the back of the car, it also says ‘Commissary Click2Go™.’ It’s a great way to drive that message and hopefully we drive a lot of impressions and we drive traffic [to stores] and get patrons excited.”

Allgaier led this year’s Charlotte race for 103 laps of 205 and was leading headed into the final lap after multiple crashes sent the race into overtime. Having missed an opportunity to pit for tires, Allgaier was passed by William Byron in the No. 17 Chevrolet on fresher rubber for the win.

Allgaier remains firmly seated in first place in the NASCAR Xfinity Series points standing with 583 as of June 2. He’s JR Motorsports winningest driver, with 24 victories in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He earned his first NASCAR Xfinity Series championship trophy last season and drove the No. 7 Chevrolet bearing the commissary logo to victory lane at Charlotte in 2023. The team is co-owned by NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., along with his sister Kelly Earnhardt Miller and fellow Hall of Famer Rick Hendrick.

The simulator’s tour takes it to 54 commissaries across the nation during the 2025 season, with its last stops at the Army’s two Fort Bragg Commissaries in North Carolina in September.

Schedule of remaining commissary appearances for the JR Motorsports No. 7 NASCAR Xfinity Series simulator car:
