Stephens, Grenier win GT World Challenge race 2 at COTA

Published

on

If ever a race proved that timing is everything, it was this weekend’s GT World Challenge America powered by AWS race two showdown.

A mid-race full course caution and the ensuing pit stop sequence dramatically altered the complexity of the race. From perfectly executed strategy calls to last-lap scraps for podium positions, the event served up a thrilling reminder that in this championship, nothing is settled until the final lap

In the end, it was Regulator Racing, JMF Motorsports, and Dollahite Racing who conquered COTA and claimed the final wins of the weekend.

Pro Class

Mikael Grenier wasted no time at the start, moving the No. 34 JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 past the Pro-Am No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 992 GT3 R of Tom Sargent and gaining overall positions in the opening laps.

The Pro class action quickly turned chaotic as both Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT3 entries found trouble. Varun Choksey and Connor De Phillippi made contact, with De Phillippi’s No. 99 sustaining minor right-front damage but able to continue. Choksey’s No. 51 battled electrical issues as a result of the incident, though he too remained in the race. The No. 99 was later given a drive-through penalty for incident responsibility.

The drama didn’t stop there. Contact between the Pro-Am No. 88 Archangel Motorsports McLaren 720S GT3 EVO and the Pro No. 18 RS1 Porsche 992 GT3 R of Jan Heylen left the McLaren with a puncture, while the No. 18 was handed a drive-through penalty of its own.

JMF Motorsports executed a perfectly timed driver change, swapping Grenier for Michai Stephens just before a full-course yellow was triggered. Aaron Povoledo’s Pro-Am No. 50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Corvette Z06 GT3.R came to a halt at the final corner with 43 minutes remaining, bringing the field under caution. With the top six cars yet to complete their pit stops, the caution period shuffled the running order and allowed Stephens to remain in the lead.

On the restart, Alex Sedgwick in the No. 18 RS1 Porsche lined up directly behind Stephens, the full-course caution erasing the time lost from his teammate’s earlier penalty. Despite a late overall pass by Philip Ellis, which dropped Stephens from the outright race lead, it had no impact on the Pro class standings.

Michai Stephens powered home to secure the Pro class victory for JMF Motorsports, with RS1 finishing second and the No. 51 Random Vandals Racing BMW M4 GT3, driven by Bill Auberlen and Varun Choksey, rounding out the podium.

“ There are tremendous individuals behind the wheel, and I’m just in a fortunate place to be able to try and soak in that knowledge as quickly as possible,” said Michai Stephens. “There are formidable teams in this Pro class.”

“It’s not going to be easy,” stated Mikael Grenier regarding the championship fight. “RS1 and Random Vandals Racing are very good teams. We need to be consistent and try to win as many races as possible because that’s where we can build the biggest gap for points.”

Pro-Am Class

The Pro-Am class delivered action from the opening lap, as Tom Sargent in the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 992 GT3 R was run wide by Mikael Grenier into Turn 1. Michael Cooper, driving the No. 2 Racers Edge Motorsports Aston Martin AMR Vantage GT3, seized the opportunity to move ahead of Sargent. However, Sargent quickly regrouped, reclaiming the position from Cooper and setting his sights on Grenier again, with the goal of chasing down Robby Foley in the No. 29 Turner Motorsport BMW for the Pro-Am class lead.

With 50 minutes remaining, Jeff Burton handed over the No. 91 Regulator Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 over to his teammate, and Philip Ellis set off to begin chasing down the frontrunners.

A full course yellow emerged shortly after after the No. 50 Chouest Povoledo Corvette came to a halt on track, which dramatically reshuffled the running order as the pit stop window had opened. Several teams and drivers, including Sargent and Foley, were caught out by the timing of their pit stops, losing ground as others benefitted from having pitted just before the caution. The Turner Motorsport BMW team suffered an additional setback during their stop, with a slow tire change caused by an air gun issue, dropping Justin Rothberg significantly down the order as he took to the track for his stint.

Jason Daskalos, who had earlier seen his teammate Isaac Sherman momentarily stopped on track in the No. 27 CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, found himself leading the Pro-Am class thanks to the pit cycle. Ellis slotted into second place, while Jason Bell spun his No. 2 Aston Martin after exiting pit lane on cold tires, allowing Blake McDonald to move into third aboard the No. 11 DXDT Racing Corvette.

On the restart, Ellis wasted no time getting past Daskalos to take over the class lead. Behind them, a fierce battle broke out for a spot in the top five, with Rothberg and Todd Coleman in the No. 88 Archangel Motorsports McLaren 720S GT3 EVO going wheel-to-wheel, resulting in Rothberg emerging ahead. Jean-Frederic Laberge in the No. 92 LAB Motorsport by GT Racing Porsche and Gray Newell in the No. 24 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin soon joined the fray, trading positions with Coleman in a heated fight for sixth place.

In the end, Ellis cruised to the Pro-Am class victory and crossed the finish line first overall. Daskalos held off a hard-charging Blake McDonald to secure second, with McDonald rounding out the podium for DXDT Racing.

“ It’s just amazing,” expressed Ellis. “The field is bigger and more competitive than last year. Jeff did an amazing job today, it was an incredible performance from him. We were a little lucky with the timing of the full course yellow because we took a gamble on the pit stop, but it came back to us.”

“The Regulator Racing crew are working super hard,” added Burton. “It’s not just about how good Philip and I are doing. We get the upfront action, but it’s the guys behind the wall that are the unsung heroes. Living the dream!”

Am Class

Scott Dollahite, behind the wheel of the No. 6 Dollahite Racing Ford Mustang GT3, was handed a drive-through penalty for a start procedure violation in the opening laps. Undeterred, he charged back through the field, reeling in Jay Schreibman in the No. 163 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 to take over the class lead. Anthony Lazzaro ultimately brought the Ford Mustang GT3 across the line in first place in class, with Oswaldo Negri securing second.

“I am very fortunate,” stated Dollahite. “Anthony did a great job. I can’t say enough about the team. They were here until one o’clock in the morning fixing the car from yesterday. I can’t ask for anything better.”

“It’s been a long time,” said Lazzaro. “Thank you to the Dollahite guys for giving me this opportunity. I raced for this man in 1998, he’s put me in some really [awesome] cars over the years! The crew did a great job getting the car back together.”

Up Next

The GT World Challenge America powered by AWS field will return for the fifth and sixth rounds of the season at Sebring International Raceway from May 16th to 18th, 2025.

Driver Development Programme aims to provide girls with support to enter motorsports

Published

on

A dozen girls whizzed around a karting track during a special test day in Nottingham, England, part of a pioneering drive to draw women into motorsports and maybe even race to the top in male-dominated Formula One.

Italian Lella Lombardi was the last woman to compete in a F1 Grand Prix in 1976, and the absence of women on the circuit is linked to young girls’ limited exposure to motorsports, according to gender parity organisations.

More Than Equal, a non-profit that supports women drivers, said girls start karting two years later than boys on average. Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, for example, started karting aged just eight.

“We know that the pathway for female drivers hasn’t successfully got a woman into Formula One competitively in the last 50 years,” More Than Equal’s head of driver development, Lauren Forrow, said.

That means girls are “not thriving within” the current system, she said.

The organisation has pledged to “make history” by training a woman not just to compete but to win.

The award recognizes excellence in storytelling and production in motorsport media.

“This award means a lot because it recognizes not just Subaru’s commitment, but the creative effort that goes into telling these stories,” said Patterson in a news release. “It’s great to see work produced from right here in Port Alberni reach audiences around the world.”

The RACER Creator Awards were made to honour the best in motorsport filmmaking, photography and digital storytelling across North America. Winners are selected by an independent panel of industry professionals for their innovation and impact.

Titus Sherlock’s Late-Season Surge Leads to FR…

Published

FR Americas Driver Champion: Titus Sherlock, Crosslink Motorsports

Titus Sherlock (No. 31 Rayne Nutrition / Ronald McDonald House Charities / Crosslink Motorsports Ligier JS F3) won the 2025 Driver Champion and the $100,000 cash prize that accompanied the accolades. Competing in his second FR Americas season, the Texan tallied eight wins—including two weekend sweeps—13 podiums, 17 top fives, one pole and two fastest race laps in the 20-race season.

Despite a dominant performance to start the season, his race to the title was anything but guaranteed. The first driver to claim a checkered flag, Sherlock took the win in in the opening race at NOLA Motorsports Park in March. That victory, paired with a weekend sweep at Road America, placed the 21 year old atop the standings after winning four of the first six rounds. However, a winless drought over the next three rounds dropped him all the way to fourth in points. Rallying to return to the top of the box with another weekend sweep at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Sherlock kicked off a seven-race podium streak, which changed the trajectory of his season. Taking the points lead with a runner-up finish in the penultimate round at VIRginia International Raceway, Sherlock carried the momentum forward to win the championship and cap off his season with one last win during the final race at Barber Motorsports Park.

“First of all, I want to thank Gill [Kaszuba, Crosslink Motorsports team owner] so much for believing in me this year and giving me this amazing opportunity,” said Sherlock while accepting his championship award. “What a group of guys you put together this year. There’s so much talent under our tent, and they’ve all done such a great job.

“Mark, you’ve been amazing. No mistakes from you, and you’ve made it a really fun time. Moses and Larry, the car’s been on point the whole year—thank you both so much. Everyone under the tent and working on my car, it’s been such a great time with you guys.

“Thank you, FR Americas, as well. I’ve been here for a couple of years and it’s been such a fun time here learning and developing. Of course, thank you to my family—my mom, my uncle, and Bailey back home. Thank you to everyone that’s been watching this season.”

In addition to the $100,000 cash prize and valuable FIA Super License Points, Sherlock earned a variety of other prizes, including a carbon Bell helmet, custom OMP racing suit, bespoke Omologato timepiece, Haas F1 Team guest experience at a 2026 F1 event, and an invitation to the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony.

FR Americas Driver Vice Champion: Nicolas Ambiado, Kiwi Motorsport

After running a partial season in 2024, Nicolas Ambiado (No. 55 Velox USA / Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3) returned to FR Americas to make a run at the championship title. With four wins, 11 podiums, 15 top fives and 17 top 10s, the Chilean stayed in the hunt until the series’ final round at Barber Motorsports Park, but ultimately finished the year as the Vice Champion, earning a $25,000 cash prize.

“I did my best this year,” said Ambiado while accepting his award. “It was a very difficult year and it was so competitive with all the drivers. We had great drivers racing, with Jett [Bowling], Bruno [Ribeiro], Titus [Sherlock], and Brady [Golan]. I’m very happy with the level of competition this year. It was very impressive.

“I just want to thank my team at Kiwi Motorsport, all the Chilean people, my family, my friends, and my dad—he’s my mechanic, he’s my dad, and he’s my friend. Thank you.”

Myles Rowe Breaks Through With Historic First Win

Published

on

Note: The Penske Entertainment editorial staff is looking back at the five biggest moments of 2025 in INDY NXT by Firestone in this year-end series, with one installment appearing on the site per day in countdown fashion from Dec. 27-31.

Myles Rowe ended the 2025 INDY NXT by Firestone season in style, scoring a commanding victory in the season finale Aug. 31 at Nashville Superspeedway.

Rowe led 20 of 65 laps to earn his second career win in the INDYCAR development series – both coming during a breakout 2025 season.

That feat marked a satisfying conclusion to a year defined by growth and resilience. ABEL Motorsports originally signed Rowe following a difficult rookie INDY NXT campaign with HMD Motorsports/Force Indy in 2024, when he went winless in 14 starts despite entering the series as the reigning USF Pro 2000 champion.

In 2025, he rewarded ABEL’s confidence by delivering two wins in his final six races, providing a timely boost to his upward trajectory.

Winning once – his breakthrough July 12 triumph at Iowa Speedway – would have been meaningful on its own. Winning twice made a stronger statement.

“It’s nice when the results start to match what you believe in your heart,” Rowe said.

Rowe’s rise has been anything but typical. After beginning in karting, he advanced to the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series in 2017 and 2018, but financial limitations forced him to step away in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated sponsorship prospects, and Rowe shifted his focus to photography while attending Pace University, unsure if he would ever return to racing.

That changed with the launch of Penske Entertainment’s Race for Equality & Change initiative in 2020, which created new pathways for minorities and women in motorsports. From that effort, Force Indy was established. In 2021, Rod Reid – founder of NXG Youth Motorsports – offered Rowe a lifeline with a USF2000 opportunity.

Rowe seized it, becoming the first Black driver to win a race in the series with a breakthrough victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park. He remained in USF2000 in 2022 with Pabst Racing, while Force Indy moved up to INDY NXT. Rowe delivered five wins that season and finished just six points short of the championship, placing second to Michael d’Orlando.

His ascent continued in 2023 with Pabst and continued Force Indy support in USF Pro 2000. Five more wins secured the title and made Rowe the first Black driver to win a North American open-wheel championship.

That achievement earned him a career enhancement scholarship to step up to INDY NXT in 2024. But his rookie year proved challenging, as he finished 11th in the standings. In 2025, he rebounded convincingly with six podium finishes, including an impressive 2.5 average finish across four oval starts. He added three podiums on road and street circuits, underscoring his versatility.

Rowe returns to ABEL Motorsports in 2026, aiming for the championship.

MWDRS Announces Schedule Adjustment, Added Payouts at US 131

Published

on

The Mid-West Drag Racing Series (MWDRS) has announced a schedule adjustment for its upcoming event at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, along with added prize money across several classes. The move comes as part of the series’ effort to support both the track and the inaugural NHRA Great Lakes Nationals scheduled there in September.

“It is clear that our MWDRS Racers, along with competitors from many other series, have a genuine affection for the Martin, Michigan track,” said MWDRS founder Keith Haney. “We are proud to announce our support for both US 131 and the NHRA, specifically regarding the NHRA’s September race at the venue.”

To help build momentum around that event, MWDRS has elected to shift its US 131 race weekend to July 31–August 1. Haney noted that the schedule change is intended to benefit both organizations.

“We feel that by adjusting our schedule July 31st – August 1st, both organizations will ultimately benefit,” Haney said.

As part of the continued collaboration with US 131 Motorsports Park and the Peterson family, MWDRS also announced additional purse money for racers across multiple categories. Thanks to US 131, bonuses include:

  • Pro Mod Slammers: $2,000 added
  • Top Sportsman: $1,000 added
  • Top Dragster: $1,000 added

MWDRS is also contributing to the purse structure, with an extra $250 going to both the Pro Jr. Dragster and Sportsman Jr. Dragster classes.

Haney emphasized the series’ longstanding relationship with the Peterson family and the track’s Northern Nationals tradition.

“We are thrilled to continue our strong relationship with the Peterson Family and the tradition of their Northern Nationals,” he said. “While we have not hosted a race in July or August for the past three years, we have elected to move our race in order to support our friends and the track, building excitement around the NHRA event.”

The Michigan stop has become one of the most anticipated on the MWDRS calendar, drawing passionate local and regional fan support alongside deep racer participation. The added purse and cooperative scheduling are designed to continue strengthening that footprint while supporting the broader drag racing community.

More information about the Mid-West Drag Racing Series season schedule and class purse structure can be found at www.MidWestDragRacingSeries.com.
