On Friday, both the New Britain and Newington boys volleyball teams played in their respective quarterfinal state tournaments.
New Britain faced the No. 2 Trumbull Eagles at Trumbull High school in the Class L state tournament and suffered a loss in straight sets while Newington won its Class M quarterfinal in straight sets against No. 5 Wolcott Tech.
Here’s a recap of each game:
Newington earns second-straight sweep in Class L state tournament
NEWINGTON — It’s been a breeze thus far for the Newington Nor’Easters boys volleyball team in the first two rounds of the state tournament. After defeating Norwich Tech in straight sets (25-8, 25-15, 25-18) on Wednesday, they earned another win in straight sets two days later defeating Wolcott Tech 25-23, 25-22, 25-14.
In Newington’s win, Tristan Gorman had 41 assists, Nate Parlapiano had 18 kills, Seng Singkhamlon had 13 kills, and Adam Redman had 15 digs.
Newington coach Curt Burns said he has been impressed with his team’s two wins in the postseason and said that Parlapiano and Gorman led the team in Friday’s win.
“The two sweeps feel good,” said Burns. “Having earned home court through the quarterfinals paid dividends for us to earn a semifinal berth. Our two 2025 All-State players (setter Tristan Gorman & outside hitter Nate Parlapiano) lead the way with their exceptional play.”
Newington (18-6) played its last home game of the season as they will No. 1 Joel Barlow on Tuesday at Naugatuck High School. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Despite the challenge that the No. 1 seed presents, the strong CCC team is ready to take on what comes its way.
“No. 1 seed Barlow is very good, but we fear no team,” Burns said. “We believe that competing in the very strong CCC this year has prepared us well for what lies ahead.”
New Britain’s season comes to an end after getting swept by Trumbull
TRUMBULL — Down in Trumbull, New Britain didn’t have the same success that Newington. In fact, they were the ones on the receiving end of a sweep, falling to the No. 2 Trumbull Eagles 20-25, 13-25, 20-25.
“Facing Trumbull in the quarterfinals, we thought we had every opportunity,” said New Britain coach Michelle Abraham. “Trumbull played great defense. We were prepared for their front row, but we just did not capitalize on the opportunities that we had.”
“It was disappointing to lose,” Abraham continued. “We were hoping to make it to the semifinals, which is getting played in Southington Monday. It would’ve been like a home game for us.”
With the loss, New Britain’s season came to an end with the Golden Canes finishing the year 14-8 and had a share of the CCC East title with Newington. Abraham said the team accomplished a few of its pre-season goals including a share of the division, and making both the conference and state tournaments.
“We had a great season,” Abraham said. “The underclassmen learned a lot, and I think they are hungry and will be better for it. We will have to do things differently next year and prepare for our youth.”
New Britain will be without six seniors next year as Casper Adamus, Eric Aguilar, Liam Alape, Werner Lynes, Jakub Pelka, and Joshua Ramales will all graduate.
