NASCAR hits Times Square ahead of ‘Full Speed’ Season 2 – Motorsport – Sports

NASCAR is gearing up for the second season of its Netflix docuseries “Full Speed,” with the motorsport series hitting New York City’s Times Square to promote the upcoming release. Netflix will release “Full Speed” season 2 on May 7. The series will follow the 2024 campaign’s races, drama, and highlights, ending with Team Penske driver Joey Logano winning a third Cup Series championship last November.
However, NASCAR fans were already less enthused about Netflix’s upcoming release, with the series dropping 11 races into the 2025 Cup Series season and new storylines already developing. Nonetheless, NASCAR and Netflix have continued to ramp up their promotion by displaying a digital billboard in the Big Apple’s famed Times Square.
The move comes after Netflix briefly teased the release date for the highly anticipated second season of NASCAR: Full Speed before bizarrely scrubbing the series trailer from the internet. However, fans have continued to point out that Season 1 was released in January 2024 before the 2024 season, whereas Season 2 will be released in May 2025.
“Imagine how well it would have gone over had it been released the week prior to the season starting. Who cares what happened last fall in May?” one replied on X. “Why bother.. Last season was 7 months ago. It’s like watching an NFL Super Bowl special in week 5 of next season,” another tweeted. “Nothing like getting hyped for the season 3 months after it starts. Why not do it like Drive to Survive and release before the first race?” a third questioned.
“About god damn time… don’t get why this doesn’t come out a week before Daytona… do the same as F1 and build some hype right before the season starts,” a fourth said. “This has been so mismanaged,” a fifth declared.

Netflix’s fly-on-the-wall docuseries was a big hit with some NASCAR drivers. The 2023 Cup Series champion, Ryan Blaney, praised Season 1’s release. “I thought they did a good job of mixing the racing side with the personality side and showing what goes into it — the ups and the downs. It’s a lot of emotions positive and negative depending on how you’re doing in it, and I thought they did a good job with that,” said Blaney last year.
“It was good to give access to those folks and just show the personal side and then the racing side, whether it’s your diehard NASCAR fan or someone who doesn’t know anything about the sport,” Blaney added. “I especially enjoyed the ending, so that part was good.”
Denny Hamlin was the protagonist of “Full Speed” Season 1, with the 56-time Cup Series race winner yet to win the Cup Series championship. Season 2 could follow Hamlin again, who was confident that 2024 would finally be his year, only to come up short again.
DON’T MISS:
“Obviously, my quest for this Cup (Series championship) has been 18 years in the making, so they thought that was a compelling story,” Hamlin said at the time. “I feel like it has been really positive for the sport and certainly, I hope we bring it to some new eyes and that is what it is all about,” Hamlin added.
Meanwhile, Christopher Bell says he doesn’t like watching back his own interviews, so “Full Speed” would be a hard pass. “I can’t watch interviews of myself, so I can’t watch it,” Bell said.

The NASCAR Cup Series begins the race weekend at Pocono Raceway with practice and qualifying for The Great American Getaway 400 on June 21.
Shane van Gisbergen’s victory in Mexico City changed the dynamics of the summer playoff chase, though now teams near the bubble can now operate with SVG in the playoffs instead of any unknowns.
10 races remain in the regular season, and 10 drivers have won races to secure a playoff berth so far. But only Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson have multiple wins (all have three victories), so playoff points earned over the next two months will be key in shaping the playoffs.
Here is what you need to know about NASCAR Cup qualifying at Pocono.
- Qualifying time: 12:45 p.m. CT Saturday (Practice begins at 11:30 a.m. CT)
- TV: Amazon Prime Video (streaming) (Watch Amazon Prime with a free trial) | Radio: SiriusXM and MRN

Riggs seizes Pocono Truck Series victory after Heim hits tire trouble
Layne Riggs capped one of the best race weekends of his young career, claiming his first ever pole position then leading the final 20 laps of Friday’s MillerTech Battery 200 to take his first NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series victory of the season in the opening race of a NASCAR tripleheader weekend at Pocono Raceway.
Riggs’ No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford beat TRICON Garage driver Tanner Gray to the checkered flag by a healthy 3.64s delivering the young star his third career series win.
Riggs had been fast all day and was running second to championship leader Corey Heim coming to a restart with 19 laps to go only to have Heim’s No. 11 Toyota suffer a flat tire just as the field was about to take the green flag.
Just after Heim pulled off the track for a quick tire change, NASCAR Cup Series driver and former Truck Series regular Carson Hocevar moved his No. 7 truck forward and into the lead on the restart – but was handed a penalty for the move.
Riggs, as the second place car, was the “control” car when Heim pit – not Hocevar – and Riggs assumed the lead for good when Hocevar pit with 18 laps remaining to serve the stop-and-go penalty for his restart violation.
“That’s just a testament to this team, that thing was bad fast especially that last run right there,” said Riggs, the 23-year-old son of former NASCAR Cup Series standout Scott Riggs.
“I really hate the No. 11 [Heim] fell out and not sure what the No. 7 [Hocevar] was doing on the restart there, but made sure to take advantage of it.
“But, hey, I’m a happy man right now. … This is not what I had circled. Last year we wrecked in practice, didn’t qualify and ran dead last all day, and today we were the best. It’s amazing.”
For much of the early race – before the tire problem – it appeared the season’s four-race winner Heim would essentially turn in a repeat performance of his work a year ago at the 2.5-mile Pocono track when he swept both stages and won the race. Heim did lead a race best 48 of the 90 laps and set an all-time series record claiming his 12th stage win.
But to his credit, Riggs – who also took a stage win – kept Heim honest all day, and that’s what put him in position to capitalize.
Kaden Honeycutt, who started on the front row alongside Riggs, finished third in the No. 45 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet. Brandon Jones in the No. 1 TRICON Garage Toyota and former NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Daniel Hemric in the No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Racing Chevrolet rounded out the top five.
Rookie Connor Mosack, Riggs’ teammate Chandler Smith, Stewart Friesen, reigning series champion Ty Majeski and Rajah Caruth completed the top 10.
Heim rallied to a 23rd-place finish and leads Riggs’ teammate, Chandler Smith, by 124 points in the championship standings.
With the victory, Riggs claims the seventh Playoff position based on race wins. Only four more regular season races remain to decide which 10 drivers will compete for the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series championship.
The series heads to the historic Lime Rock Park road course in Connecticut for next Saturday’s inaugural LIUNA 150 (1 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Fans of the Pro Class 1 Alegra Motorsports team will have to wait a little longer to catch owner/driver Carlos de Quesada and throttleman John Tomlinson in the outfit’s new-to-them 45-foot Victory raceboat. The almost-finished catamaran is not almost-finished enough for this weekend’s XINSURANCE Offshore races, the Pro Class 1 season-opener and first event to be sanctioned by the World Offshore Powerboat Racing Association.

Captured a month ago in this image, the new Alegra Motorsports catamaran wasn’t quite ready for its Pro Class 1 debut this weekend.
“We’re all disappointed, but we collectively decided not to go the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend,” Stray explained. “It was not for lack of trying. We pushed really hard to a long time. Unfortunately, there are still too many bits and pieces that need to be finished.
“But the boat looks great,” he added.
Stray took delivery of canopied catamaran, which had been mothballed for years and needed extensive renovation as well new class-spec Mercury Racing 1100 Comp engines, in January. Stray and company essentially gutted the cat, right down its wiring harness, and started with fresh with custom-fabricated parts such a carbon fiber engine mounts. They renovated the catamaran’s cockpit and brought it to state-of-the-art safety standards.

There just wasn’t enough time, even with Stray and company working six days a week, often late into the night. Stray assured Alegra Motorsports fans that the new cat will be at the Race World Offshore-produced Great Lakes Grand Prix August 1-4 in Michigan City, Ind.
“The boat just wasn’t ready,” Tomlinson said. “So the only boat I have to throttle this weekend is the (Factory Stock-class) Mead Family Racing MTI cat with Caleb Mead.”

Lime Rock Park’s NASCAR comeback just gained automotive muscle. Chevrolet, America’s $47 billion automotive titan, has been named Official Vehicle of the iconic Connecticut circuit. The explosive partnership launches Jun. 27 with the LIUNA 150 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, marking NASCAR’s return after a 14-year hiatus.
The deal deploys Chevrolet’s most advanced models across track operations. From pace trucks to emergency response, the Bowtie brand will dominate the facility as NASCAR reignites its Northeast legacy. This collaboration blends cutting-edge engineering with historic asphalt.
Chevrolet Deploys High-Tech Fleet for NASCAR Operations
A fleet of factory-equipped Chevrolets will become Lime Rock’s backbone. Two Silverado 1500 RST trucks will pace NASCAR’s field, while specialized models handle critical functions. The lineup includes:
- Blazer EV SS electric performance SUV
- Corvette Stingray supercar
- Silverado 2500 LT crew cabs
- BrightDrop 400 electric delivery vans
These vehicles will manage VIP transport, emergency services, and logistical support year-round. Chevrolet activates further with product displays in the fan zone near the main entrance, showcasing new models at the track that famously lacks grandstands, where spectators watch from grassy Appalachian foothills.

“This partnership with Chevrolet brings an iconic automotive brand to the forefront of an exciting new chapter at Lime Rock Park,” declared Lime Rock President and CEO Dicky Riegel. The enthusiasm echoed through Chevrolet’s ranks.
“We are excited to feature Chevrolet’s latest lineup both on and off the track for the inaugural NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series event.”
“Chevrolet is excited for the opportunity to form a partnership with Lime Rock Park,” said Todd Christensen, Director of Motorsports Marketing & Activation for Chevrolet.
“With our history competing at Lime Rock Park, we’re looking forward to being a part of NASCAR’s return to the circuit and bringing one of the sport’s most competitive series to the northeast.”
Lime Rock Park Revives NASCAR’s Northeast Legacy
Lime Rock’s 1.53-mile road course last hosted NASCAR in 2011. Its return after 14 years becomes a strategic conquest for stock car racing’s Northeast expansion. The venue, the third-oldest continuously operating road course in America, previously hosted legends like Ken Schrader and Ryan Truex across 20 Busch North Series races from 1993-2011.
Major infrastructure upgrades now complete the stage. Extended pit lanes and enhanced safety features accommodate modern NASCAR competition. Labor union LIUNA’s title sponsorship underscores regional significance.
LIUNA Vice President and New England Regional Manager Donato A. Bianco Jr. said, “On behalf of the 63,000 skilled, hard-working, men and women of the New England Region, who build our states infrastructure, we are honored to welcome the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to Connecticut and be this year’s title sponsor of the LIUNA 150 at Lime Rock Park.”
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Chief Venue Officer, emphasized the strategic play: “We are proud to bring the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series to historic Lime Rock Park for the first time.”
Meanwhile, Chevrolet’s operational presence signals deeper manufacturer involvement. Their fleet enables the unique spectator experience that Lime Rock champions, with fans bringing blankets and chairs to hillside viewing spots. As Silverado pace trucks lead the field, this partnership fuels NASCAR’s Northeast resurgence with American horsepower.

Porsche’s Manthey EMA squad grabbed pole for this weekend’s Nürburgring 24 Hours after factory driver Kévin Estre produced a blistering 8:12.741 lap in Friday’s Top Qualifying. The Frenchman’s time in the No. 911 “Grello” Porsche 911 GT3 R was more than a second clear of the field despite air temps in the 90s °F and track temps topping 125 °F. Estre will share the car with Thomas Preining and Ayhancan Güven.
The session was halted for 75 minutes when Laurens Vanthoor crashed the No. 16 Scherer Sport PHX Porsche at Schwedenkreuz on his first flying lap. Vanthoor was unhurt, but the damage ruled the car out of the race. When qualifying resumed and was shortened to a single timed lap, Estre delivered sector-best times in four of nine splits to secure pole.

Falken Motorsports placed its No. 33 Porsche fourth with local driver Nico Menzel, while teammate Morris Schuring put the sister No. 44 entry 12th. The Black Falcon Porsche qualified 11th after a post-lap penalty, third among Pro-Am runners.
With victories already this season at Daytona, Sebring, Long Beach, and Laguna Seca, Porsche heads into the six-hour Watkins Glen round of the IMSA championship atop every points table, but focus in Germany is firmly on the twice-around-the-clock classic. Porsche has 12 overall wins at the event, including last year’s triumph for the 963 prototype.
Green flag for the 25.378-kilometer Nordschleife–GP circuit combination drops Saturday at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. EDT). Germany’s Nitro channel carries full live coverage; an English-language stream and timing are available at the official race website.

Front Row Motorsports took a jab at Carson Hocevar via social media after a costly mistake ruined his shot at victory in the NASCAR Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway on Friday, June 20, 2025.
The No. 7 Spire Motorsports driver was penalized for jumping FRM’s No. 34 driver, Layne Riggs, during the final restart after race leader Corey Heim had to pit unexpectedly due to a rear right tire going flat.
Front Row Motorsports Roasted Carson Hocevar With a Brutal GIF
The incident happened with just 19 laps to go in the 80-lap race. Hocevar moved ahead of Layne Riggs during the restart after leader Corey Heim pitted with a flat tire. NASCAR rules say the second-place driver becomes the “control” car if the leader pits.
In this case, Riggs was in second, and Hocevar should have waited. Instead, he surged forward and took control of the restart, which was against the rules. NASCAR handed Hocevar a pass-through penalty for the restart violation. He was forced to pit under green with 18 laps left, which dropped him out of contention.
Hocevar ended the race in 13th place. Riggs took over the lead and went on to win the race for Front Row Motorsports. Clearly upset over the call, he called the penalty a “joke” via team radio and sarcastically told race director Seth Kramlich, “Good job, Seth.”
However, the Spire Motorsports driver had not seen the end of it, as not long after the race, FRM fired back with a mocking post online.
FRM wrote, “Hey Hocevar” on X to go along with a GIF that read, “Shoo… Go Away.”

Hocevar will be back on track this Sunday, June 22, in the Cup Series race at Pocono, the Great American Getaway 400. The race begins at 2:00 p.m. ET.
More: Carson Hocevar Unleashes Scathing Radio Message on NASCAR After Costly Truck Series Setback
Hocevar Learned His ‘Lesson’ After Making Derogatory Comments About Mexico City
Hocevar faced strong backlash in the past week after making offensive remarks about Mexico City during a livestream. Before NASCAR’s first Cup Series points race outside the United States since 1958, Hocevar reportedly made controversial remarks about Mexico’s capital and questioned its safety and travel conditions.
His comments quickly spread and drew criticism from fans and the racing community. Spire Motorsports acted quickly. The team fined Hocevar $50,000 and ordered him to complete cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training. The team said his words did not reflect their values.
The money from the fine will be donated equally to Cruz Roja Mexicana, United Way Mexico, and Un Kilo de Ayuda. In a public statement, Spire said the team expects its members to treat all communities with respect, both on and off the track.
After the race weekend, Hocevar apologized on social media. On Monday, June 16, he said he was “embarrassed” by what he said and admitted he had no real knowledge of the city. In his message, he said:
“Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should ever give an opinion about what any place is like… I am embarrassed by my comments, by the race I ran.. Count this as another lesson for me in a season I’ve learned so much. Don’t believe everything you hear without seeing it yourself.”
Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should ever give an opinion about what any place is like other than Portage, Michigan.
When I answered that question on a stream, I was skeptical about the trip so far and believed everything I read or heard…
— Carson Hocevar (@CarsonHocevar) June 16, 2025
After receiving the penalties, Hocevar expressed that he had judged the city based on things he had heard from others but now knew better, and promised to take the experience as a lesson and work on being more respectful in the future.
