What’s Happening?

Garret Mitchell, better known as Cleetus McFarland, has brought new attention to NASCAR and the ARCA Menards Series. A deep dive into the numbers shows that Mitchell is bringing new eyes to the sport and his own brand as well.

A Symbiotic Relationship

While YouTuber Garret Mitchell’s time in NASCAR has been brief, the manner in which the sport props the 30-year-old car enthusiast up has obviously drawn its fair share of haters.

NASCAR fans, often timid about allowing outsiders into their circle, have wondered if NASCAR only cares for the attention brought by Mitchell, who has a massive 4.29 million subscribers on his channel, Cleetus McFarland. Yet, when Mitchell ran his first ARCA Menards Series race at Daytona in February, the sport itself welcomed him with open arms.

NASCAR even collaborated with Mitchell to create a live in-car camera that would be on YouTube during the race. Even after he crashed early on, Mitchell was perhaps the first ARCA driver to hop in the FOX booth post-wreck to talk about his experience.

However, with his appearance at Talladega last weekend, the talk of the town was once again the attention he brought alongside him, including multiple collaborations with NASCAR Media, all hoping to gain from his inclusion in their productions.

After Daytona, fans had dubbed his presence “the Cleetus McFarland Effect,” but just how strong has his impact been, and could his ARCA efforts help both himself and NASCAR? Let’s take a look at the numbers behind the “Cleetus McFarland Effect.”

NASCAR’s Gains

During his short debut in the ARCA Menards Series Ride the ‘dente 200, Mitchell’s in-car camera on the NASCAR YouTube Channel exploded and, at press time, sits at 780,159 views. But his true effect would not be seen till days after the race when news broke that the race scored 1.160 million viewers, the most-watched ARCA Daytona race since 2013.

This bump in viewership was partially thanks to the race’s slot on “Big FOX,” which was given to the series prior to McFarland or even Hélio Castroneves entering the race. However, McFarland’s impact was clear, as clips of his now infamous quote of “Rippin’ around Daytona like a bald eagle” even circulated outside normal NASCAR circles.

According to Social Blade, by the end of February, the NASCAR YouTube channel had jumped from January’s 1.330 million subscribers to 1.380 million. This means that after roughly gaining 10,000 to 30,000 new subscribers a month in 2024, the sport dropped to 50,000 from January to February.

Some could say there is little correlation to the “Cleetus McFarland Effect” present in these numbers. Still, during his second race at Talladega this past weekend, the NASCAR YouTube channel again leaped, gaining roughly 20,000 subscribers that Saturday.

Once again, his live in-car camera on the NASCAR YouTube Channel had over 70,000 viewers at one point. This alone is good news for NASCAR, as getting new eyes on the product is great, but the question remains: is Mitchell seeing any gains from NASCAR’s viewers?

Cleetus’ New Found Exposure

Mitchell’s gains are clear via his YouTube stats as well.

During his ARCA Menards Series debut, Mitchell’s pre-race uploads, “The Start of my NASCAR Career” and “NASCAR Put Me On Probation, Here’s Why,” garnered 1.8 and 2 million views apiece, respectively. While a massive number, this is typical for the Cleetus McFarland YouTube Channel.

Even his latest ARCA video, “Talladega ARCA 200 – Insane Finish With a Broken Engine! (we got LUCKY),” currently has just 1.3 million views. But his non-racing videos, in which he collabs with Dale Earnhardt Jr., have set the bar. His video at Talladega with Earnhardt, titled “Dale Jr. Drives the Dale Truck! (blew his mind), scored 2.1 million views and has only been up for a little over two weeks.

Another video titled Meeting Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Touring his Race Shop, after his appearance on the Dale Jr. Download and uploaded to his secondary channel, Cleetus2 McFarland, is the channel’s ninth most watched video, at 1.1 million views.

The true magnitude of Mitchell’s growth since January is seen in his subscriber count.

According to Social Blade, in January, the month in which ARCA tested at Daytona, he gained 60,000 subscribers; in February, 80,000 subscribers; and in April, Mitchell added another 60,000 subscribers. Mitchell ended January with 4.110 million subscribers and is currently at 4.29 million, which is not bad for a few months.

The Ripple Affect

Obviously, NASCAR and Mitchell have both seen some impressive gains in attention since the start of this indirect symbiotic relationship. This growth has spilled over beyond these two and into the broader NASCAR landscape.

We have already talked about the bump in viewership for NASCAR on FOX and the views his video has gained on social media, but what about the rest of the NASCAR media scene?

Mitchell has appeared on numerous NASCAR podcasts at this point. His interview on Corey LaJoie’s Stacking Pennies is currently the show’s second-most-watched episode on YouTube.

Mitchell’s recent interview with Kevin Harvick on FOX Sports’ Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour from May 1 is already the podcast’s most-watched episode on YouTube, with over 350k views.

Mitchell has even topped the charts on perhaps the most popular NASCAR YouTube Channel, as his post-Daytona interview on the Dale Jr Download is the most viewed full-length episode on the Dirty Mo Media YouTube Channel and the third most watched video overall at 1.8 million views.

Whether fans like it or not, Mitchell’s time in NASCAR is drawing numbers and attention for the driver, the sport, and NASCAR media. As he continues his journey through NASCAR, these numbers may only continue to grow.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Denny Hamlin will miss NASCAR’s first international race of the modern era to remain in North Carolina following the birth of his child.

Ryan Truex will replace him Sunday in Mexico City.

“See you guys in Pocono,” Hamlin posted on social media. “We are happy to announce the birth of our son. Everyone is doing well. My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.”

Hamlin and fiancee Jordan Fish now have three children, two daughters and a son born Wednesday. Hamlin had been on baby watch the last 12 days as Fish went nearly two weeks past her predicted due date.

He had planned to get out of the car at Michigan last Sunday if she went into labor early in the race, but when the first stage passed with no word, he went on to score his third win of the season. The victory was the 57th of his career and made him the all-time winningest driver at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Through 15 races this season, Hamlin ranks third in the overall Cup Series standings.

Truex, younger brother of former JGR full-time driver Martin Truex Jr., is Gibbs’ reserve driver. His last Cup Series start was in 2014 and he has 26 starts at NASCAR’s top level.

Hamlin will need NASCAR to grant him a waiver to be eligible to compete in the playoffs for the Cup Series championship. NASCAR during the offseason tightened the rules for granting waivers, but said it would permit a driver skipping an event for the birth of a child.

The 44-year-old Hamlin will snap his streak of 406 consecutive starts. Hamlin last missed a race in 2014 at California Speedway because of an eye irritation.

The third event of the 2025 NASCAR Euro Series season brought the thunder to the iconic Brands Hatch circuit for the highly anticipated American SpeedFest. With almost 50,000 fans in attendance across the weekend, the SpeedFest once again proved to be the crown jewel of the calendar. The fans were treated to a sensational festival of motorsport, Americana, and family-friendly entertainment – all set against the rolling hills of the Kent countryside.

The event was not only a success at the track but also across digital platforms. NASCAR Euro Series content generated over 1.1 million impressions, with 90,000 engagements and a remarkable eight percent engagement rate. The official EuroNASCAR YouTube channel surpassed 40,000 subscribers, with over 500,000 minutes of live racing watched during the weekend alone – setting new benchmarks for the series.

Off the track, the American SpeedFest offered a full-blown festival experience. From monster trucks and live stunt shows to country music concerts and classic car parades, there was something for everyone. Fans got up close with the stars of EuroNASCAR in the paddock and enjoyed a weekend of racing, show cars, American food, and plenty of attractions.

Rounds 5 and 6 of the PRO and OPEN championships delivered intense battles on the legendary Indy layout. In the PRO category, the competition was fierce with elbows out and tempers flaring – every corner was a fight for survival. Gianmarco Ercoli was crowned “King of Brands Hatch” after two phenomenal race wins.

In the OPEN class, drama unfolded in every lap as drivers pushed their cars and skills to the limit in front of a roaring British crowd. In a rainy Saturday race, Melvin de Groot grabbed his maiden NASCAR win, while the reigning champion Martin Doubek struck back on Sunday, but de Groot got the title “Prince of Brands Hatch”.

With the season heating up, EuroNASCAR now turns its attention to the next round. The race to the championship continues, and fans can catch all the action live on YouTube and EuroNASCAR’s international TV partners. One thing is clear: SpeedFest 2025 has raised the bar once again. The regular season finale will take place on August 30-31 after the summer break at Autodrom Most, Czech Republic.

Mexico City, Mexico – The sun broke through the clouds on Friday afternoon after rain moved both practice sessions back a few hours.

All 37 Cup teams were greeted with two full-field practice sessions to help the teams figure out the newest road course on the circuit. The first session allowed 50 minutes of track time for all 37 teams while the second session was half the length at 25 minutes.

Kyle Larson was the highest finishing Hendrick Motorsports driver in practice one, setting a time good enough for fifth. Chase Elliott was top of the board for the quartet in practice two in 12th position.

While both practice sessions helped the teams figure out the 15-turn road course, many unknowns still surround the race weekend. With rain looming just around the corner, anything can happen in tomorrow’s qualifying session and Sunday’s race.

(AP) — Scott McLaughlin’s miserable month of May — he crashed twice at the Indianapolis 500, caused a crash at Detroit and engaged in a post-race social media feud with Tony Kanaan — has finally ended.

Now it’s on to Gateway outside of St. Louis and a fresh start for the Team Penske driver as IndyCar prepares for only its second race on an oval this season and first event televised in prime-time by Fox.

“That whole month was pretty tough. It started really well. It ended in a couple bad ways,” McLaughlin acknowledged. “It was one of, if not the lowest, points of my career. But it’s something that I’ll learn from. Champions are made learning from their mistakes.”

McLaughlin crashed in practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and it prevented him from taking a car that many believed was a threat to win the pole out to qualify. Hours later, teammates Josef Newgarden and Will Power were found to have illegal modifications on their cars and were disqualified from qualifying.

The ensuing days were chaotic as team owner Roger Penske, who also owns IndyCar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500, handled the situation internally by firing his top three IndyCar executives. The housecleaning included Tim Cindric, who had spent 25 years with Penske and was the architect of much of the organizations’ success.

Newgarden and Power were penalized and dropped to the back of the field for the start of the 500, while McLaughlin got to keep his 10th-place starting position. But come race day, armed with new crew members, McLaughlin was determined to earn his first Indy 500 victory.

Instead, he crashed on the warm-up lap and immediately burst into tears.

The New Zealander hoped to rebound one week later on the streets of Detroit, but contact with Arrow McLaren driver Nolan Siegel caused Siegel to crash. McLaughlin finished 12th, lowest of the Penske trio at Detroit.

He later engaged in a tense social media back-and-forth with McLaren team principal Kanaan, and it ramped up when Kanaan took aim at both McLaughlin’s crash at Indy on the warm-up lap and the Penske firings in comments that seemed over-the-line.

“Misjudged last week, misjudged this week, at least you get a weekend off to square that away,” Kanaan wrote. “I came looking for your team principal to have a chat but I couldn’t find him. Oh wait……”

IndyCar was off last week and McLaughlin said he and Kanaan have spoken, but he declined to discuss the details. He later insisted all is well between the two rivals even though it wasn’t the first time the two have argued on social media. It’s been a recurring theme dating to last season when McLaughlin criticized McLaren’s revolving door of drivers.

“Me and T.K. are completely fine. We cleared the air. There was nothing to really clear,” McLaughlin said. “It’s like he clapped back, and I clapped back. It’s just how it is. I thought it was funny that he posted during the race. I, like, responded. I didn’t think he was going to respond the next time, but he did.

“Me and T.K. have always sort of talked on the social media. It’s not like a year-long feud. It’s just one of those deals where someone’s going to call me out, I’ll clap back as well. It’s just who I am. I’m not going to change.”

Did he take Kanaan’s words personally, considering Team Penske had a major overhaul of team personnel at Indianapolis?

“It is what it is. That was his decision,” McLaughlin said.

The upheaval at Penske is ongoing as IndyCar readies for Sunday night’s race at Gateway. Penske has had to shift personnel across three teams to cover the vacancies and the three-car lineup will have new engineers and strategists again this weekend.

It makes it difficult to win — all three Penske drivers have yet to make it to victory lane this season — against Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing. Palou has won five of seven races this season, including the Indianapolis 500. Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global has won the other two.

McLaughlin hasn’t given up and believes Palou’s run will eventually come to an end. He has two wins on ovals — Iowa and Milwaukee — and a pair of podium finishes at Gateway. McLaughlin finished second there last year.

“I definitely don’t think anyone’s unstoppable. I think when they’re going through a purple patch, they’re executing like they are, it’s tough,” he said of Palou. “You have to figure out where you can be better and stronger and adapt to that. I enjoy that challenge. He’s on a great run. There’s no stopping us from learning where we can improve and where we can be better.

“We have some great tracks coming up for us. Just got to keep our heads down, keep focused and learn as much as we can.”

NASCAR star Denny Hamlin got an early Father’s Day Gift.

Hamlin announced that he will miss the Cup Series’ first ever race in Mexico this weekend following the birth of his son. Hamlin and fiancée Jordan Fish also share daughters Taylor James, 12, and Molly Gold Hamlin, 7.

“We are happy to announce the birth of our son,” Hamlin announced on social media on June 12. “Everyone is doing well. My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.”

Hamlin previously hinted at skipping the Viva México 250 earlier this week as his family awaited baby Hamlin’s arrival, citing the distance between his North Carolina home and Mexico City as his main concern.

“Ultimately I need to be there for her,” Hamlin said during a June 10 interview on SiriusXM NASCAR. “I’m just going to make sure I spend the proper time with her. The racing will come second this week.”

Hamlin is expected to return to racing next weekend. He signed off his birth announcement, writing, “See you guys in Pocono,” referring to the Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway on June 22.

It’s been an eventful month for Hamlin. Not only did the Hamlin family welcome baby No. 3, he also picked up his third NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season in the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on June 8.

Hamlin has 57 wins in his Cup Series career, which ranks 11th on the all-time list. While a championship has eluded him, he finished runner-up in 2010 and third three times (2006, 2014 and 2021).

Drivers departed for Mexico City on Thursday with practice for the Viva Mexico 250 beginning Saturday ahead of the Sunday’s June 15 Cup race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Ryan Truex will drive the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in Mexico City, the team announced on June 12, stating that JGR intends to apply for “a waiver to maintain his status for the 2025 Playoffs.”

NASCAR classifies the birth of a child as an exemption to its Playoff Waiver System, meaning Hamlin should be eligible to compete for the 2025 Cup Series championship later this year.

Round 16 of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season takes the top level of the sport to a place where they’ve never been before — Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. It will also be the first points-paying Cup race outside of the United States since 1958.

William Byron leads the regular season standings, 41 points clear of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson. Denny Hamlin is the most recent winner, claiming victory at Michigan. The Xfinity Series raced in Mexico City for a few yers between 2005 and 2008 and Hamlin is just one of three active Cup drivers who took part in at least one of those events.

News of the week

This week, Ram confirmed its highly anticipated return to the NASCAR Truck Series. NASCAR officials also indicated that they are “very close” to securing a fifth manufacturer, but discussions are ongoing.

It was also revealed that the Xfinity race in Mexico City will feature three Mexican-born drivers. Along with Daniel Suarez, 2024 ARCA champion Andres Perez De Lara and 2020 NASCAR Mexico Series champion Ruben Rovelo will be making their debut.

Denny Hamlin will skip the race following the birth of his son, reporting in a statement that “everyone is doing well.” It will be the first Cup race he misses in over 11 years with Ryan Truex replacing him behind the wheel of the No. 11 Toyota.

NASCAR also adjusted the weekend schedule on Thursday evening due to travel challenges including a grounded aircraft that adversely impacted several drivers and teams.
