MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Jayson Alexander will pilot the No. 02 Constant Contact Chevrolet Silverado fielded by Young’s Motorsports in the May 17 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway.

Alexander has experience in the ARCA Menards Series and CARS Tour, but he also balances a rigorous schedule as a full-time student at Queens University, where he plays Division I lacrosse and is a member of the ROTC program.

This makes him the only driver actively competing in a Division I sport while simultaneously pursuing a career in NASCAR —an inspiring testament to his drive, discipline and dedication.

“I am super excited to be joining such a storied organization in Young’s Motorsports,” said Alexander. “I cannot thank Tyler and the entire Young family enough for giving me this opportunity.

“I also want to thank our amazing partner, Constant Contact, for continuing to support me as our primary partner for the 2025 campaign. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of our No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado at North Wilkesboro.”

Young’s Motorsports team principal Tyler Young welcomed the youngster to the team’s lineup, growing roster that includes Nathan Byrd, who has competed in the majority of the 2025 season behind the wheel of the team’s flagship No. 02 Chevrolet.

“We are excited to bring Jayson on board for his 2025 season debut,” added Young. “He’s done a great job in every series he’s competed in, and we believe he has the talent and determination to make a name for himself in racing.

“Our team is committed to supporting him and building a fast race truck to help him succeed in this series.”

Alexander will return to Young’s Motorsports in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competition at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis on July 25 and New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 20.

The Apex, N.C., native made his Truck Series debut last summer at The Milwaukee Mile driving an entry for Floridan Motorsports.

Dave Mathers - Monday Morning Motormouth!
Dave Mathers

In this week’s Motion Motorsport Report, Dave Mathers is revved up about the return of the ISMA Supermodifieds to Delaware Speedway last Friday. He also looks at other news and races around Ontario and the racing world.

GRAND SLAM HOME RUN! Delaware Speedway played host last Friday night to the return – after eight long years – of the bad, fast, and exciting Super Modifieds, and the results were nothing short of spectacular! The largest crowd in many years filled the stands and the parking lots – and reportedly cleaned out the concession stands.

The Supermodifieds were a hit at Delaware Speedway last Friday. Polesitter Tyler Shullick, in the pits. Photo by Chris Culos.

As always, the pit rumor mill was buzzing, with many suggesting the series will be back next year on the Saturday of the Canada Day weekend. Thanks to the new ownership group, the track was wisely repaved a few years ago, making side-by-side racing possible – something that simply wasn’t feasible on the old surface. Race results are found below.

In yet another head-scratching move from the IndyCar technical staff, A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ car, driven by second-place finisher Santino Ferrucci in Detroit, was fined $25,000 and docked 25 driver points for – get this – having a driver ballast that didn’t meet the 185-pound combined weight requirement by less than a pound, violating the narrow tolerance of 0.00 to +1.00 pounds. Yes, the ‘Danica Patrick Rule’ is intended to prevent unfair advantages for lighter drivers, but here’s the kicker: the car was TEN pounds overweight! Really?

There’s talk that teams are encouraging NASCAR to consider upping the horsepower in the Cup Series. (Photo by Meg Oliphant/Getty Images)

Rumours are swirling that NASCAR may increase horsepower for the Cup cars. Teams have been lobbying for more power to better complement the Next Gen chassis, and let’s face it – what driver doesn’t want more horsepower? While we’re unlikely to return to the 900+ HP days, a bit more oomph could certainly spice things up.

From Jayski.com: A three-judge panel from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has vacated the preliminary injunction that allowed 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports to compete as chartered teams and receive the associated financial benefits. Good news for NASCAR.

Reports are also circulating about NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps attending a NASCAR Brazil race, igniting speculation that a Cup Series race could be headed there. But what about CANADA? Tons of fans here, and no international flights required!

After many years, I finally got to meet superstar race photographer Alan Arseneault last Friday night at Delaware. I’ve admired his incredible racing photos for years but had never met him in person. Great guy.

At a press event at Michigan International Speedway (MIS), Stellantis announced its return to NASCAR. RAM trucks will initially enter the Truck Series, with strong rumors of a future move to Xfinity and Cup. Good news!

NASCAR Cup Series – At MIS qualifying, Chase Briscoe (Toyota) snagged his third straight pole, edging out Kyle Busch (Chevy) and Denny Hamlin (Toyota). The field featured 36 cars: 15 Chevys, 12 Fords, and 9 Toyotas. Tyler Reddick had to start at the back after some “unapproved adjustments.”

Stage 1 went smoothly, with Chris Buescher taking the stage win. The first caution came on lap 59 when Noah Gragson and John Hunter Nemechek spun on the backstretch. Soon after, Cole Custer and Alex Bowman collided, with Bowman hitting the wall hard. Briscoe and Daniel Suarez also got caught up, prompting a yellow and then red for debris.

On lap 72, Nemechek backed it into the wall in Turn 4. Another yellow. Ryan Blaney spun entering pit road on lap 109 – yet another yellow. William Byron claimed Stage 2. On lap 145, Todd Gilliland hit the wall in Turn 2 after a left rear tire blew.

At the checkered flag, it was Denny Hamlin with a fuel-mileage victory over Chris Buescher and Ty Gibbs. Three of the top four finishers near the Motor City were Toyotas. In the points, William Byron leads Kyle Larson by 41, and Hamlin by 82.

Next race: Mexico City, Friday, 3 p.m. on TSN 3

Xfinity Series – Next race: Mexico City, Saturday, 4:30 p.m. on CW

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series – Saturday at MIS, Luke Fenhaus (Ford) earned the pole over Carson Hocevar (Chevy) and Matt Crafton (Ford). Canadian Stewart Friesen (Toyota) started 17th. The 32-truck field included 16 Chevys, 10 Fords, and 6 Toyotas – still no RAMs. Corey Heim took both Stage 1 and 2 wins. At halfway, Heim led over Kaden Honeycutt and Hocevar.

The first caution came just three laps into the restart when Jack Wood backed it into the wall in Turn 4. Rajah Caruth also found the Turn 2 wall shortly after, with a little help. A tangle between Nathan Byrd and Morgen Baird led to another yellow and eventually a red for wall repairs.

The final 20 laps were wild, with the lead changing several times. Ross Chastain got fully sideways after contact with Hocevar but saved it. A tire carcass caused another yellow with 9 to go. On the restart, a wreck collected Daniel Hemric, Chastain, and eight others, after Tanner Gray turned Chastain. And once again, Live Timing had a meltdown – showing Hemric 15 laps down and Corey LaJoie 12 laps back with four laps to go.

NASCAR overtime! Lawless Alan Body slammed the wall after contact but kept rolling. Hemric blew a tire with two to go – another yellow. On the third green-white-checkered attempt, Friesen took advantage of others going high and restarted on the inside front row. At the flag, it was “Oh, Canada!” – Friesen took the win over Grant Enfinger and Fenhaus.

In points, Heim (finished 18th) leads Chandler Smith by 133 and Hemric by 151. Friesen sits 10th, 258 points back.

Next race: Pocono, Friday, June 20

$40 Billion-Backed Fast Food Chain Signs on as Primary Sponsor for NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race

Arby’s has made a major splash in NASCAR by becoming a founding partner of the Chicago Street Race. The fast food giant, which is part of the $40 billion Inspire Brands family, replaces McDonald’s as a top-tier sponsor for the July 5-6 event at Grant Park.

This partnership marks Arby’s first major NASCAR event sponsorship and signals growing commercial momentum for the sport’s only street race.

Arby’s Makes Its Mark on NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race

The partnership positions Arby’s alongside Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois and Xfinity’s Xumo as the third founding partner for 2025. This represents a significant shift in the event’s sponsorship landscape after McDonald’s held the position for two years.

Jeff Baker, Arby’s Chief Marketing Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture: “This marks an exciting moment for our brand in the world of motorsports, with one of the most dynamic and groundbreaking events in racing. Nothing goes better with NASCAR than one of our delicious Arby’s sandwiches, and we can’t wait to bring the meats to the streets for race fans and Arby’s fans in Chicago and beyond.”

And the sponsorship goes much further than just branding. The Arby’s brand will be showcased on the Rick Ware Racing No. 51 Ford Mustang with driver Cody Ware, who will also make fan appearances throughout the race week. The brand also increased its motorsports presence in 2025, acting as primary sponsor on 12 Cup Series races.

The deal comes as NASCAR negotiates with Chicago on extending the event beyond the original three-year agreement.

Chicago Street Race Gets Fan-Friendly Upgrades

NASCAR has added a number of enhancements to make the sport more fan friendly in 2025. Prices have dropped substantially, with single-day grounds passes priced from $123.08, taxes and fees included, a 35% reduction compared to last year. The Premier grandstand seats are nearly 50% off 2024 prices.

Children 12 and under receive free admission all weekend with an accompanying adult’s grounds pass. The event features a streamlined experience with shortened setup and breakdown timelines, reduced concert lineup, and more accessible hospitality options.

Fans can participate in Arby’s ticket sweepstakes through June 22 at 47 Chicago area locations. The brand will have major on-site activations, product offers, and surprise appearances throughout the weekend at the 2.14-mile and 12-turn street course.

NASCAR’s Chief Commercial Officer Craig Stimmel called Arby’s entry a “watershed moment” for both the event and sport. The Chicago Street Race earned “Sports Event of the Year” recognition from Sports Business Journal after its debut, reflecting NASCAR’s growing urban appeal and mainstream relevance.

Ronald Devine pleads guilty to failing to pay payroll taxes while operating BK Racing. The team competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2012 to 2017.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former NASCAR team owner Ronald Devine pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to failing to pay payroll taxes, the latest legal setback for the former BK Racing owner who faces millions in court judgments.

Devine, 68, admitted to failing to account for and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in payroll taxes between 2012 and 2017 while operating BK Racing, which competed in the NASCAR Cup Series. The case was prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina

According to court documents, Devine transferred more than $2 million in payroll tax funds to other businesses he owned and controlled instead of paying the required federal taxes. The funds were supposed to be held in trust to cover income taxes and Social Security and Medicare contributions withheld from employees’ paychecks.

Devine was released on bond following his plea. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A sentencing date has not been set.

The guilty plea adds to Devine’s mounting legal troubles. In April, a federal appeals court upheld a $2.5 million judgment against Devine and associate Michael DiSeveria in a case involving the sale of a NASCAR charter to Front Row Motorsports.

In January, the same appeals court upheld a $31 million fine against Devine for failing to comply with court orders in bankruptcy proceedings.

BK Racing operated from 2012 to 2018, fielding cars for drivers including current Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman, Corey LaJoie and Matt DiBenedetto. The team’s best finish was a sixth-place result at Bristol with DiBenedetto in April 2016.

The team filed for bankruptcy in 2018, with its assets, including NASCAR charters sold at auction.

Rising Hendrick Motorsports star Corey Day promised that he will never change his aggressive driving style after suffering a terrifying crash in the Eagle Nationals on the High Limit Racing circuit.

Last December, Day inked a multi-year deal with Hendrick Motorsports that will see him run in the NASCAR Xfinity, Craftsman Truck, ARCA Menards and TransAm Series this season. The 19-year-old has been dubbed the “next Kyle Larson” after beating the No. 5 Chevrolet driver in the High Limit Racing sprint car opener, but conceded that he still feels out of place as the youngest wheelman on the team.

With five laps remaining in Tuesday’s race, Corey was battling Buddy Kofoid for the lead when his right front tire got into the wall in the backstretch on Turn 3. His No. 14 Sander Engineering car swiftly cleared the guardrail and went barrelling into the outside catch fence following several violent flips.

Safety crews promptly rushed to Day’s aid and removed him from the overturned car. He miraculously emerged from the harrowing incident unscathed, telling a reporter afterwards: “Yeah, I’m all good.

“I was trying really hard there. I think when I got into Buddy, my front end was messed up and got high off of 2 and felt like I couldn’t turn as good as I could have the whole race before that. So, you know, I wasn’t lifting. It’s 55 grand to win, so, yeah, I’d go redo that one, but I was trying.”

Taking to social media on the heels of the race, Day insisted that the massive wreck would not stop him from taking risks on the racetrack in the future. “First off, I sit here thanking the man above for keeping me safe, and allowing me to be able to race another day,” he wrote on X. “Second, I apologize to the @JMRacing14 boys for creating more work than necessary.

“With that being said, some people love how I drive, and some people hate it, but I can promise one thing, I’ll never change. Thank you to everyone who supports me, we will have a fresh one ready for Knoxville on Friday.”

In the early stages of Day’s tenure with Hendrick Motorsports, the young phenom has shown several flashes of brilliance. Over three Xfinity Series races, he’s amassed 66 points — most recently placing 11th at Nashville Superspeedway.

DON’T MISS:

While racing for Spire Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series, Day has run six races with his best finish (fifth) additionally coming at Nashville.

“It’s just a dream come true, really,” Day told Express U.S. Sports of representing Hendrick Motorsports. “It’s something that I never thought would happen for me — I thought I was just going to be a dirt sprint car racer my whole life.

“So to say that I am signed to the top NASCAR team, in my opinion, at 19 years old is unreal. Been super busy, more busy than I’ve ever been in my 19 years of living, but I’m loving it.”

This weekend, NASCAR travels south of the border for the Viva Mexico 250 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, its first race outside the U.S. in decades. Formula 1 is back in North America for the Canadian Grand Prix, and IndyCar races in the heartland at World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis.

•••

Last weekend, it was NASCAR and NHRA on the calendar. The Cup race at Michigan saw speeds of over 200 mph but it came down to fuel mileage at the end. Wily veteran Denny Hamlin stretched his mileage, while those ahead of him pitted for fuel, and took his third victory of the season. Chase Briscoe took his third consecutive pole on Saturday but finished 23rd. Carson Hocevar showed a remarkable turn of speed but had to pit for gas a few laps from the checker and wound up 29th.

•••

No one in the field (except Daniel Suarez) has any experience at the Mexico City track, so teams got two practices Friday and will qualify Saturday at 9 a.m., broadcast on Prime. The CW will air Xfinity qualifying at 7 a.m. and the Chilango 150 at 1:30 p.m. Sunday’s Viva Mexico 250 on Prime starts at noon. A couple of notes: depending on the timing of his new baby’s arrival, Hamlin might not race this weekend. Ryan Truex is standing by to substitute in the No. 11 Toyota. And Katherine Legge will make her second Cup start of the season. Watch for road course experts A.J. Allmendinger and Shane van Gisbergen to run at the front. It is also the second of three seeding races for the In-Season Challenge, a new NASCAR gimmick. Visit NASCAR.com for details.

•••

Team Penske has ruled World Wide Technology Raceway since IndyCar’s return to the facility in 2017. In nine races, Penske drivers have taken seven poles and six wins. Josef Newgarden leads active drivers with five wins, one pole, and the track record with a lap of 24.6317 seconds or 182.69 mph. Will Power has one win for Penske while Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon has won twice. Takuma Sato won in 2019 for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The track is a 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval with progressive banking and completely different turns at either end, providing setup challenges and compromises. Practice airs at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with qualifying at noon, both on FS1. FS2 will air final practice at 2:30 p.m. Sunday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 will air on FOX at 5 p.m.

Going into the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, four-time champion Max Verstappen faces the possibility of missing the next race. After his altercation with George Russell in Spain, Verstappen only has one point left on his license before a suspension will take effect. So, he needs to keep his temper in check this weekend or two drivers are facing the possibility of being absent for Red Bull’s home race in Austria in two weeks. Verstappen has won the Canadian GP the last three years but is still far short of Lewis Hamilton’s seven Montreal victories. They are the only two drivers on the grid who have won in Canada, but that could change this year. McLaren has been on a tear, and I expect that Sunday’s race will be another fight for the win between teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Free practice airs at 9:30 a.m., followed by qualifying at 1 p.m., both on ESPN2. Sunday’s race is on ABC beginning at 11 a.m.
