The NASCAR Chicago Street race is facing concerns from local residents ahead of its return for the third year of racing in the city in July.

The Chicago Police met with local residents along with NASCAR representatives on Wednesday, according to a report from CBS News. One resident, Paul Wasserman, claimed, “It’s really tough on the neighborhood during NASCAR.

“Occasionally when there’s an event going on down here, you get like a bad day or maybe a bad night for like a Beyoncé concert [at Soldier Field] or something, but this is like that, but for however long NSACAR goes on.”

He added:

“I understand that we might have to live with it, but if it were elsewhere, I’d be happier.”

Central (1st) District police Cmdr. David Harris responded to residents concerns, explaining:

“I understand it’s a lot of people live down here, and they’re not interested in their front yard being a party every weekend.”

NASCAR’s response

President of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, Julie Giese commented:

“We have been working very hard to minimize those disruptions.”

Giese also addressed the amount of time NASCAR is in the city for, which is expected to be a total of 25 days of disruptions from setup to to clearing up the course. She added:

“We’re going to continue to get better at this,” Giese said.

NASCAR Chicago Street Race contract

NASCAR officials announced a three-year contract extension for the Chicago Street Race in 2023, which will see it’s agreement conclude at the end of the current season.

Steve O’Donnell, who recently took the role of NASCAR President, commented on the future of the event in December 2024. He explained, as previously reported by Newsweek Sports:

“For us, we’re just looking at 2025. It’ll be the third year of a three-year run, and each year we’ve wanted to build upon the momentum that we have.

“We’ve learned things each and every year — it’s our first street race, a lot of learnings came from that.”

He added:

“[There are] a number of folks who are interested at looking at NASCAR from a street race [perspective].

“We are certainly interested in California and the Southern California market, and that will continue to be a focus for us, but nothing to confirm at this point.”

Giese also responded to questions about the event’s future during the Wednesday meeting, to which she stated:

“Again, right now, our focus is on this year’s event. We have those option years. We’ll have those conversations.”

Ram will join the field for the 2026 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, ending a 13-year break. Today, the brand unveiled a new Ram 1500 concept race truck that previews the design for next year. Returning to the racetrack marks a major milestone, part of a pedal-to-the-metal drive for Ram that covers 25 product announcements over 18 months.

The news of Ram’s return to NASCAR was officially announced by Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Ram brand, during a live NASCAR event at the Michigan International Speedway this weekend. Jaw-dropping moments included a Ram 5500 hauling a custom trailer built specifically for smoky donuts, courtesy of Ram’s NASCAR concept truck. Anderson Silva, Hall of Fame MMA icon, took to the track to shoot HEMI®-branded T-shirts into the crowd.

“For more than a decade, customers and our dealer network asked about getting back into NASCAR. The desire was always there, but we didn’t have a plan that delivered the last tenth and following just didn’t fit our DNA,” said Kuniskis. “Now we have a solid plan that will set us apart from the field and will bring fresh new interest and engagement to America’s motorsport.”

Joining the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, in a way that only Ram can, is a natural, strategic move for the brand, as more than 40% of NASCAR fans are truck owners. The popular and competitive race series gives Ram a high-performance showcase as it launches a series of exciting and capable new trucks.

“Ram returning to the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series is a major moment for the sport, and a sign that NASCAR remains a strong platform for blue chip brand partners,” said John Probst, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. “We are excited to welcome Ram back to the sport. Its identity includes high performance, durability and innovation – characteristics that embody NASCAR and, specifically, the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series.”

Ram 1500 NASCAR Concept
The Ram 1500 concept race truck unveiled today was molded by the Ram design team. The concept resembles a production truck, adopting elements from the Ram Truck Sport lineup (Warlock, Rebel and RHO), but honed with an aerodynamic signature to slip through the air efficiently, yet with enough airflow to cool a race engine that revs over 9,000 rpm. Body lines around the fenders and grille carry a familiar appearance, framing a large Ram logo that separates this truck from the pack.

The one-off body design is covered by a two-tone Gloss Black canvas with Molten Red lower. The Ram design team created an impactful and exciting livery that complements the visual emotion of Ram’s design DNA and highlights Direct Connection and Symbol of Protest logos. Mopar’s Direct Connection aftermarket unit is adding performance options for Ram trucks and earns prominent signage on the concept race truck.

“There will be more details on our NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series program later this year,” added Kuniskis. “We are undoubtedly having fun with this project, and I truly look forward to sharing information on our team and how getting back on track relates to the future of Ram performance.”

In conjunction with the news, the brand showed off its “Ram-Demption” campaign, featuring Kuniskis behind the wheel of Ram’s NASCAR concept truck at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, with the iconic Goodyear Blimp and jets flying overhead. Different versions of the “Ram-Demption” video include 60-second, 30-second and 15-second spots that will run across NASCAR media and the Ram brand’s social media channels, plus a long-form video running on www.ram.com and on YouTube. “Ram-Demption” was created in partnership with Argonaut agency.

Ram’s racing news is part of a power celebration that includes a popular demand return of the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, as orders open for the engine’s availability in the 2026 Ram 1500.

Ram exited factory support of NASCAR’s CRAFTSMAN Truck Series in 2012 after a 17-year run and focused on launching the new 2013 Ram 1500. Ram’s return is one part of a strategy to build on the greatest variety of sport trucks and off-road enthusiast trucks the brand has ever offered.

Ram boasts a rich history of performance trucks, including the Power Wagon, SRT10 Viper Truck, TRX, RHO, Rumble Bee, Little Red Express and Warlock.

In 2004, a Ram SRT-10, piloted by NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan, set a Guinness World Record for the world’s fastest production truck with an average speed of 154.587 mph (248.784 km/h) at the Stellantis Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Mich.

Ram Brand
Ram offers a full lineup of pickups and commercial vehicles; the Ram 1500, 2500/3500 Heavy Duty, 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab and ProMaster vans.

The Ram Light-Duty and Heavy Duty pickups are considerably improved for 2025 and offer new products in the fastest growing segment within the pickup space—Sport Trucks. Ram introduced the largest variety of off-road performance trucks the brand has ever offered, including the new Ram 1500 RHO with more horsepower per dollar than any other performance off-road pickup.

In the commercial business, Ram is launching the new 2025 Chassis Cab line with improvements to help customers and upfitters. Ram Professional is making considerable changes in process, execution and resources with a focus on commercial offerings, dedicated B2B-focused expertise, and sales and service support, which are critical to growing in this segment.

Ram continues to outperform the competition, setting the benchmark in the most important areas for truck buyers:

Ram is returning to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2026 following a 13-year break, according to Stellantis.

Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Ram, made the announcement Sunday at Michigan International Speedway ahead of the FireKeepers Casino 400.

Ram left the Truck Series in 2012 after a 17-year run to focus on the launch of the 2013 Ram 1500.

“For more than a decade, customers and our dealer network asked about getting back into NASCAR,” Kuniskis said. “The desire was always there, but we didn’t have a plan that delivered the last tenth and following just didn’t fit our DNA. Now we have a solid plan that will set us apart from the field and will bring fresh new interest and engagement to America’s motorsport.”

Ram to enter trucks in 2026 with possible future move to Cup for Dodge

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Dodge parent company Stellantis will enter NASCAR racing in 2026 with its Ram brand competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with an eye toward going Cup racing in the years beyond.

Whether that’s 2027 or later — 2027 is possible but would be an aggressive timeline — remains to be seen as the announcement Sunday focused primarily on the truck, a much easier lift than going Cup racing.

With all trucks in the series using an Ilmor engine and several common body elements, Ram just needed to design a nose, a hood, front fenders and a tail for its racing vehicle. Ram did not announce who will drive its trucks nor the teams that will field its trucks. Ram CEO Tim Kinuskis said he hopes to have somewhere between four and six trucks for the 2026 season opener at Daytona.

“We’re looking for a date to the prom right now [for trucks],” Kinuskis said. “So how am I going to get the Cup? That’s going to depend on how I get to truck. So however we get to truck is going will obviously weigh heavily on do I have a path to Cup?

“Our intention is not to do a one-hit wonder and go to truck and not to Cup. That’s not our plan.”

Ram does not have cars so what brand of car — Dodge? Plymouth’s possible rebirth? — is still to be determined although Dodge has a lengthy history in the sport and motorsports as a whole.

“Ram is coming back to the truck series,” Kinuskis said. “It has nothing to do with Dodge, despite the fact that everyone in the world calls it Dodge Ram. … If we go back to Cup, which is our intention, Ram doesn’t have a car, so obviously that would have to be Dodge coming back.

“But I’m not making that announcement. I’m not saying Dodge is back. Don’t put that headline. But when we get to that point, it wouldn’t be Ram, obviously.”

There is speculation in the industry that GMS, which has competed in all three national series over the last decade and was eventually bought out by Jimmie Johnson in the rebranding to Legacy Motor Club, will be involved in building chassis and/or fielding trucks for Ram.

Kinuskis promised a program that will elevate fan engagement, and YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, who has competed in some ARCA races, has been linked to the Ram program.

Dodge had Cup teams from 2001-12 before exiting the sport on a high note with Brad Keselowski winning a Cup title at Team Penske. When Penske left for Ford, Dodge had trouble landing a premier team and opted to leave the sport. No new manufacturer has entered the sport since Toyota did so in 2004 in trucks and 2007 in Cup.

Kinuskis also said when he returned to Ram earlier this year, his two goals were to reintroduce the Hemi engine and get into NASCAR, where 50 percent of its fan base own trucks.

“It’s always bothered me,” Kinuskis said. “We’ve always been looking for a way to get back. It took us a long time to find the absolute right time.”

To re-enter Cup would take some engine development and significant body design, a process that would take at least 18 months, NASCAR Chief Racing Development Officer John Probst said.

“The last time that engine ran was 2012 — the core components of the block, the head, the manifold, are all still relevant,” Probst said. “Our existing engine builders develop their engines every year. There’s been a gap there, so there’d be some development of that engine needed.

“But from the basic building blocks they could start from that and do some catch-up development.”

Kinuskis wouldn’t talk about a timeline Sunday for going to Cup racing.

“Our full intention is to be back in Cup,” Kinuskis said. “But right now we’re on a path for Daytona next year with truck, with our eye on when we can be in Cup after that. TBD.

“We’re a fly with no net right now trying to get to Daytona. That’s our focus right now.”

Keselowski, currently a driver and co-owner at RFK Racing, said the trucks are the right entry point for a manufacturer as it doesn’t have to immediately get an engine available and because of the parity in the series.

“[The truck series] is a great place for an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] to enter NASCAR and really kind of get that appetite going for the Cup Series,” Keselowski said.

“It’s a big jump from the truck series to the Cup Series, but nonetheless it’s a great entry point for OEMs, and hopefully they aren’t the only one that will enter the truck series.”

Ram Trucks’ re-entry into the NASCAR Truck Series became official on Sunday. And its announcement was heavy on hyperbole and light on details.

The Stellantis brand will return to the Truck Series next season after Dodge had been a mainstay in NASCAR’s third-tier series since its mid-1990s inception. Dodge’s last season in the Cup Series came in 2012 when Brad Keselowski won the title for Team Penske in a Charger and a Ram truck was last driven in the Truck Series in 2013.

Ram made its announcement ahead of Sunday’s Cup Series race at Michigan, but that announcement didn’t include any teams or drivers for next season. It did, however, include this whopper of a quote from Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis.

From NBC Sports:

“Our objective is to take the 20 million (avid fans of NASCAR) and turn it into 80 or 100 million,” he said. “We have a plan. We know how we’re going to do it. We think we have a path to get to that. We think people are going to like the way we’re doing it because it’s going to be fun. Not ready to share all the details with you yet, but I told you that the experiential piece was going to be just a little bit of how we’re doing it. It’s going to get crazier from there.”

In case you were wondering, the average weekly TV audience for the Cup Series was 2.9 million people in 2024 — or, if you prefer, roughly 17.1 million fewer people than the number of avid fans that Kuniskis cited.

But even quadrupling NASCAR’s average Cup Series viewership to 12 million would be one of the greatest audience turnarounds in modern American sports history. And, well, the odds are quite stacked against a single truck manufacturer pulling that off. Especially with the number of trucks that Ram expects to field in 2026. Kuniskis said the brand wants to have four to six trucks in the field next season — though it was notable that no one had been locked up ahead of the announcement to be unveiled as Ram’s first partner.

One of the drivers Ram is rumored to have a truck for next season is Garrett Mitchell. Far more widely known as the YouTuber Cleetus McFarland, Mitchell, 30, has made starts in the ARCA Series in 2025. He has over 4 million followers on his YouTube page and it reasons that many of them aren’t already regular NASCAR fans.

If Mitchell gets a ride in a Ram truck and is successful, he could certainly boost the Truck Series. But without many details — or even a confirmed ride for him — it’s way too early for predictions or proclamations.

Ram’s return is, however, a moment that’s been over 20 years in the making for NASCAR. Though the truck brand isn’t truly new to NASCAR, Ram is the first since Toyota in 2004 to join NASCAR. Since Dodge left NASCAR in 2013, Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota have been the only three manufacturers in NASCAR’s top three series.

Will a fourth manufucturer join the Cup Series anytime soon? NASCAR has said for years that it’s been having discussions with other automakers, but nothing has come of those discussions.

Sunday, that hedging continued. NASCAR vice president John Probst told the Sports Business Journal that the sanctioning body was “very close” with a new manufacturer while also saying that the manufacturer was yet to make a decision. Finally adding that fourth Cup Series manufacturer would be a big win for NASCAR. If and when it happens.

“I don’t want to jinx ourselves, but I would say we are very close with one other; can’t speak for them — obviously it’s their decision to make — (but) we would love for them to decide to come into NASCAR. And even with that, there’s one or two others that we’re a little bit earlier in the discussions (with) but also looking pretty positive. But we also know an OEM deciding to come into NASCAR — it’s a big commitment for them, and it’s not something they take lightly,” Probst said. “It requires a lot of research and approvals at the highest levels, and we’re confident right now, we like the position we’re in and think we’re a pretty good investment for an OEM.”

Welcome to the Racing America On SI Live Race Updates page for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Be sure to refresh this post throughout Sunday’s event as the Live Race Updates story will be updated regularly with the biggest moments from the 400-mile race around the 2-mile oval, including lead changes, crash replays, the winner of the race, finishing results, and more.

Lap 68: Caution No. 3

Alex Bowman was sent hard into the outside wall in Turn 2. The driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet went head-on into the outside wall. Bowman’s rear tires lifted off the ground completely in the extremely hard crash.

Bowman’s crash was triggered by a mess that was started by contact from Austin Cindric onto Cole Custer.

Cindric, and Custer were in a four-wide battle ahead of Bowman with Riley Herbst and Daniel Suarez. Suarez went spinning and Chase Briscoe was also involved. The crash caused the race to be red flagged for cleanup.

Lap 66: Back to Green!

Chase Elliott maintains the lead on the restart, and Blaney has lost second spot to William Byron off of Turn 2, and now Kyle Larson is working on Blaney for the third spot. It looks like Blaney was able to hold Larson at bay.

Lap 60: Caution No. 2

We’re under caution for the second time in the FireKeepers Casino 400, the first time for an on-track incident. On Lap 60, John Hunter Nemechek lost control of his No. 42 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB Toyota on the exit of Turn 2, and got into the outside wall. Noah Gragson would also spin out trying to avoid the incident from the low line.

Lap 58: Denny Hamlin Nearly Crashes!

In a side-by-side battle with Kyle Larson in Turns 1 and 2 on Lap 58, Denny Hamlin washed up the track, into Larson, and he nearly lost control of his No. 11 Toyota. Somehow, Hamlin held onto his car, but he has now fallen to 11th.

Lap 57: Chase Elliott Takes the Lead

Chase Elliott made a move to get by Ryan Blaney for the race lead on Lap 57. Elliott now begins to pull away as he leads his first lap of the race.

Lap 55: Buescher Drops to 10th

After restarting fourth, Chris Buescher, who won Stage 1, has dropped to the 10th position on Lap 55. However, Buescher had really good long-run speed, which he showed in the opening Stage.

Lap 53: Back to Green!

Ryan Blaney will lead the field into Turn 1 with a solid push from Carson Hocevar on the restart. Hocevar is now locked in a side-by-side battle with Denny Hamlin for the runner-up spot.

Blaney will lead Lap 53, and Chris Buescher nearly crashes into Chase Elliott in Turns 3 and 4.

Lap 49: Ryan Blaney Wins Race Off Pit Road

Ryan Blaney, who took control of last week’s race at Nashville Superspeedway due to pit road, won the race off pit road on Lap 49. Blaney and the No. 12 Team Penske team gained five spots on pit road.

Top-10 drivers off of pit road:

1. 12-Ryan Blaney (+5 spots)
2. 11-Denny Hamlin (+1)
3. 77-Carson Hocevar (+7)
4. 17-Chris Buescher (-3)
5. 9-Chase Elliott (+9)
6. 8-Kyle Busch (+3)
7. 24-William Byron (-5)
8. 23-Bubba Wallace (=)
9. 5-Kyle Larson (-2)
10. 1-Ross Chastain (+10)

Lap 45: Buescher Wins Stage 1

Chris Buescher took the Stage 1 win in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 over William Byron. Buescher took the lead with a pass on Byron on Lap 35, and didn’t look back.

Denny Hamlin was closing in on Byron for the runner-up spot, but was unable to pull off a pass before the Stage concluded at the end of Lap 45.

Lap 35: Buescher Takes Lead From Byron

Chris Buescher finally was able to make it all work and he took the race lead from William Byron on Lap 35. Buescher is now starting to gap Byron. With the Stage drawing to a close, Denny Hamlin is now reeling in Byron for the runner-up spot.

Lap 34: Daniel Suarez (Vibration) Pits

Daniel Suarez, who had been running around 26th, has come to pit road for an unscheduled pit stop due to a vibration he felt behind the wheel of the No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet. The team didn’t want to chance a possible tire failure.

Suarez now runs last (36th), and is one lap off the pace.

Lap 30: Gibbs Dropping Like a Rock as Buescher Pressures Byron for Lead

Chris Buescher definitely has a better car than race leader William Byron right now, but he hasn’t been able to find a way around for the race lead yet. But it looks like just a matter of time. As Buescher and Byron battle it out, Denny Hamlin has gotten around Chase Briscoe for the third spot.

As this is going on, Ty Gibbs, who was up inside the top-10 not long ago, has dropped like a rock to 21st.

Lap 19: Cars With Long-Run Speed Starting to Creep Forward

Kyle Larson was able to get around Ty Gibbs for the seventh position, and a lap later, Ryan Blaney, who passed Carson Hocevar for ninth on Lap 19, also got by Gibbs for eighth. It looks like Larson, Blaney, and some of the cars that are really good on the long run, are starting to move up the running order.

Lap 18: Buescher Continues to Move Forward

Chris Buescher is now up to the runner-up spot, and he is setting sail on race leader William Byron. Buescher was able to get around polesitter Chase Briscoe for the second spot on Lap 18.

Lap 13: Buescher Moves to Third

After pressuring Denny Hamlin for several laps, Chris Buescher, the 2023 winner of the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway, was able to get by the driver of the No. 11 Toyota for the third position.

Lap 12: Lead Change No. 1

William Byron was able to get around Chase Briscoe for the race lead on Lap 12 with some side-drafting down the backstretch. Byron leads in the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, and he put an end to Briscoe’s 11 laps led to start Sunday’s race.

Lap 10 Running Order

Here is the running order at Lap 10 of the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan:

1. 19-Chase Briscoe
2. 24-William Byron
3. 11-Denny Hamlin
4. 17-Chris Buescher
5. 18-Kyle Busch
6. 21-Josh Berry
7. 54-Ty Gibbs
8. 5-Kyle Larson
9. 77-Carson Hocevar
10. 12-Ryan Blaney

Lap 3: Tyler Reddick is FLYING!

Tyler Reddick, the defending winner of this event, has worked his way inside of the top-20 by the end of Lap 3. Reddick, who initially qualified 12th, had to start the race from the rear of the field after unapproved adjustments were made to his car after Saturday’s qualifying session.

Reddick has gone from 36th to 19th already.

Lap 2: William Byron Up to P2, Busch Slides to Fourth

William Byron has climbed up to the runner-up spot on Lap 2, and he has his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet tucked in very tightly behind Briscoe’s No. 19 Toyota. Kyle Busch, who started from the second position, and challenged Briscoe for the lead on Lap 1, has fallen to fourth.

Seeding for $1 Million NASCAR In-Season Tournament Begins at Michigan

While the first-ever NASCAR In-Season Tournament isn’t set to begin until the June 28 Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway (formerly Atlanta Motor Speedway), the next three races will be a pivotal component of who will walk away with the $1 million bonus.

The seeding for the five-race 32-driver tournament will be set based on the best overall finishes for drivers at Michigan International Speedway, Mexico City, and Pocono Raceway.

A win at Michigan International Speedway would ensure that a driver will not be seeded any lower than third for the in-season tournament, which will see pairings of drivers face off head-to-head with the highest finisher in the tournament races advancing to the next round of the tournament.

After the opening four races of the tournament, the 32-driver field will be whittled down to just two drivers, who will battle it out head-to-head in the Brickyard 400, the final race of the tournament.
