The Sports Market Report by The Business Research Company delivers a detailed market assessment, covering size projections from 2025 to 2034. This report explores crucial market trends, major drivers and market segmentation by [key segment categories].
What Is the Sports Market Size and Projected Growth Rate?
The size of the sports market has seen substantial expansion in the latest years. There’s an expectation for it to escalate from $477.8 billion in 2024 to $507.69 billion in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3%. The historic growth can be accredited to robust economic development in rising markets, swift ecommerce progression, quick urbanization, the advent of numerous sports channels, and heavy expenditure on sponsorships.
Anticipated to experience significant expansion in the coming years, the sports market is projected to reach $635.42 billion by 2029 with a 5.8% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Factors such as increased accessibility to the internet, favorable government programs, and a surge in sports-centric tourism contribute to the predicted growth in the forecast period. Key trends projected for this period include a rise in the use of AR and VR technology, the introduction of sports-based streaming apps, the implementation of contactless technologies and mobile ticketing, a focus on optimizing engagement with social media users, and the use of analytics for ticket pricing. Other prominent tendencies involve hybrid fitness formats for improved workout results, mobile training apps, technology meant to enhance the skiing experience, personalized fan interaction strategies, and the amalgamation of entertainment and sports. The transition from sponsorships to partnerships, corporate social responsibility (CSR), environmental sustainability, focusing on varying demographic cohorts, the incorporation of technology in bowling centers, and the blending of bowling with other activities also play a role in this forecasted growth.

There is a slight projected rise in the growth of advanced economies, moving up from 1.6 percent in 2023 to 1.7 percent in 2024, and reaching a 1.8 percent by 2025. In 2024, India is expected to maintain robust growth at 6.8 percent. This ongoing economic expansion is anticipated to heighten the demand for sports.

Teams and clubs are trialing with simulated and panoramic settings to amplify the game-viewing experience for spectators, providing them with a virtual tour of the stadium or race track, along with views of the game from multiple perspectives. As an example, the basketball game between the Sacramento Kings and the San Antonio Spurs was aired in VR. A strong performance alone is not enough. What counts is the environment. If you meet platforms that not only offer visibility but also relevant contacts – retailers, media, investors – you will gain a real head start.
ISPO 2025 (30. NOV. – 02. DEC. 2025) is just such a platform. With curated arenas for Sportstech, Health & Wellbeing, Raw Materials, Retail Solutions – and of course the ISPO Brandnew Village – it is a catalyst for startups with vision.
Caspar Copetti, co-founder of On, makes this clear. Great opportunities arose for his brand not only after ISPO, but also shortly after the Brandnew Award announcement:
Just two weeks after the announcement, we had 600 emails in our inbox – which is also how our first six distribution partnerships came about.
Another special highlight is the Founders Fight Club, a pitch competition that puts start-ups to the test with direct feedback, critical questions and lots of entertainment. Those who impress here not only gain international attention, but often also valuable contacts and investors.
Whether matchmaking with retailers in the new Retail Clubmedia boost through the Global Sports Creator Summit or concrete support through the ISPO Young Talents program: not only contacts are made here , but real opportunities for company growth.

The future of sports isn’t tech; it’s leadership
In an era where algorithms analyze every play and wearables track every heartbeat, it’s easy to believe that data now drives professional sports. In an era where algorithms analyze every play and wearables track every heartbeat, it’s easy to believe that data now drives professional sports. But as technology transforms the industry at lightning speed — from AI-generated scouting reports to virtual reality training — one truth remains: It still takes a leader to motivate players, inspire a team and steer a franchise to success on the field and off.
The future of sports may be increasingly digital, but its heart is still deeply human. Behind each advanced analytic is a person who created it — a flesh-and-blood being who, despite possessing incredible talent and athletic ability, is subject to the same human fears, doubts and need for interpersonal connection as all of us are.
That’s why leaders matter. We instinctively know this to be true, yet despite the billions of dollars the sports industry has invested in advanced technology, analytics and cutting edge artificial intelligence platforms, sports has invested very little in maximizing the capacity of those who are perhaps the most influential in developing raw talent into highly capable performers.
Leadership pipelines still look like they did a decade ago with sporadic mentorship, a weekend seminar and the occasional MBA. Meanwhile, the tech stack keeps piling higher. And in this high-tech arena, strong, visionary sports leadership will be more essential than ever.
At Abilene Christian University, we decided the answer wasn’t another gadget. It was a new kind of curriculum. On May 19, we launched the Center for Sports Leadership and Learning, a fully online bachelor’s and master’s hub built in partnership with organizations like the Texas Rangers and Houston Texans.
Our goal is to unlock the human potential within each sports professional and athlete. Our curriculum is grounded in self-assessments, guiding leaders to understand themselves on and off the field.
We’re also helping leaders understand others by developing the emotional intelligence it takes to navigate high-stakes situations and conflict. We call this “high-performance leadership” and it makes all the difference in an industry where the tech stack keeps rising and the pressure to win at all costs builds.
Our early pilot with RangersU, an academic pathway for Texas Rangers players and coaches, shows what’s possible. The Houston Texans, the National Amateur Fall Baseball Federation and Endebrock Talent Management are among our growing list of partners who believe sports, at its core, is a character venture.
But ACU is just one university. The larger point is this: Every conference, league and sports-tech startup now faces the same choice. Invest in comprehensive leadership development or watch emerging technology outpace the people tasked with wielding it responsibly.
In the biblical Book of Proverbs we’re reminded, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The sports industry is staring at a vision vacuum — one that no sensor, streaming deal or blockchain ticketing platform can fill. The solution is deceptively simple and incredibly hard: Build better leaders to keep up with tech.
That’s the play ACU has chosen. We invite leagues, athletic directors and forward-thinking franchises to run it with us, because the scoreboard of the future will measure character every bit as much as points, and the teams that train for both will own the next era of sport.
Stephen Johnson is CEO of Abilene Christian University–Dallas, home of the Center for Sports Leadership and Learning.

How the Global Esports Federation is leading a new digital era
In a world where the lines between the digital and physical are increasingly blurred, the Global Esports Federation is helping to shape the future of global sport and education. At the recent 18th International Session for National Olympic Academies’ and National Olympic Committees’ Delegates, held under the auspices of the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia, Greece, Thanos Karagrounas, Chief Impact Officer of the GEF, delivered a compelling address that crystallized the vision of esports as a transformative global movement.

Titled “Esports Shaping the New Digital Era of Sport and Education,” Karagrounas’ session was a clarion call to sports leaders, educators, and policymakers. “We stand at the crossroads of a remarkable convergence,” he said, “where technology, innovation, youth culture, education, and athletic competition are meeting in a digital arena.”
For Karagrounas and the Global Esports Federation, esports is not a distraction from traditional sport — it’s an evolution. “Esports doesn’t just coexist with traditional sports; it transforms the idea of athletic identity”, he noted. “It proves that excellence, discipline, and competition can thrive in digital arenas.”
A New Kind of Athlete
The traditional metrics of athletic performance — strength, endurance, and agility — are being complemented, and in some cases redefined, by new skill sets required in the digital realm. Karagrounas emphasized that elite esports athletes exhibit “mental acuity, lightning-fast reflexes, strategic thinking, and stamina similar to traditional sport disciplines.”
Far from the stereotype that gaming is sedentary, today’s esports players adhere to structured training programs. Teams employ coaches, nutritionists, and sports psychologists to optimize athletes’ performance. “Professional esports athletes train rigorously — combining gameplay with physical and mental performance training, including nutrition, reflex optimization, and psychological resilience,” Karagrounas explained.
The Global Impact of a Digital Movement
But esports is not just about performance — it’s about participation and access. With a community of billions of gamers worldwide, it is becoming a cornerstone of modern youth culture. “Esports resonates deeply with younger generations,” said Karagrounas.
This movement is also capturing the attention of national governments and educational institutions. “Gaming and esports are no longer on the periphery,” Karagrounas stated. “A number of countries are already embracing it as a core element of their national vision for development, and strategies for youth engagement and impact.”
From curriculum integration to digital literacy initiatives, esports is being leveraged as a new educational medium. The GEF advocates for clear academic pathways that connect esports with career-readiness, digital literacy, and lifelong learning.
Responsibility at the Forefront
While the opportunities are immense, Karagrounas was equally clear about the responsibilities that come with them. “With opportunity comes responsibility,” he said. “We must build the appropriate governance, ethics, and infrastructure to support esports.”
He called for the establishment of international standards around health, wellness, fair play, and safeguarding. He emphasized the importance of promoting gender equity and creating inclusive, respectful communities. He also urged collaboration, “We must encourage public-private partnerships between governments, educational institutions, and the tech sector to foster innovation responsibly.”
Shaping the Future with Intention
In Karagrounas’ view, embracing esports is not optional for sport leaders and educators — it is essential. “Let us not mistake esports for a passing phenomenon or a youth distraction. It is a cultural movement, a new educational medium, and a legitimate activity in the digital age.”
The Global Esports Federation has long championed this philosophy. As a convening body rather than a governing one, the GEF focuses on shaping the future of esports through inclusive global partnerships and dialogue. Its mission is rooted in the belief that esports can be a force for social connection, innovation, and opportunity.
As Karagrounas concluded, “The question is not whether we should embrace esports — but how we will do so with integrity, vision, and global cooperation. If we can align esports with our broader goals for education, wellness, innovation, and social connection, then we are not just witnessing the future — we are building it.”
In that spirit, the Global Esports Federation continues to lead — not just in redefining what sport can be, but in inspiring the next generation of thinkers, players, and leaders.
