BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Hundreds of baseball players from around the Bryan-College Station area gathered in Bryan Saturday to do more than just play ball; they’re also raising funds for their fellow Little Leaguers.

Travis Fields at Midtown Park was filled with baseball gloves, Louiseville sluggers, and lots of green to represent the late Easton Root at the third annual Play for Easton tournament.

“We started this foundation and the tournament after our son died of a liver disease almost three years ago. So the main reason we have this tournament is our fundraiser for the year, for the Play For Easton Foundation,” explained Brad Root, Easton’s father and founder of Play for Easton.

The ‘Play for Easton’ foundation’s goal is to raise money to support local kids’ sport-based camps, travel teams, equipment, and more, all in the name is Easton Root.

Easton Root passed away at 9 years old in 2022, and since then, his parents have worked hard to make sure other kids his age can take part in the sports he loved playing.

“A lot of children weren’t afforded the opportunity to play on these travel ball teams due to financials. It‘s very expensive to play on these teams. So what we do is we provide assistance to any kid who wants to play on any of these teams or play any type of sport, that’s what today is about,” furthered Brad Root.

Lacey Baze, A friend of the Root family and mother of Brazos Baze, who used to be teammates with Easton, said today means more than just bringing home the gold. To her, the day felt like a full circle moment, seeing her son representing his friend to help other kids play the sport they shared a passion for.

“It’s really special for me this year because my son is actually playing in the tournament for the first time. And so I, you know, seeing him out there with his ‘Play for Easton’ socks is just, you know, it’s kind of incredible,”

The foundation works to keep up a legacy Easton left behind, taking care of others and being a friend to all.

“He was friends with everybody, and he always looked out for, you know, the kids who maybe… he could tell that they might need his friendship. There’s a buddy bench, actually, at his school, like in his memory. So just for him to be able to help people even now is tremendous and amazing,“ shared Lacy Baze.

The ‘Play for Eason’ foundation has already helped around 50 kids in the area play the sports they love in Easton’s honor, and this year, the foundation has already raised thousands to fund even more.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — A school system in Connecticut is under investigation by the Trump administration over its transgender athletic policy, the U.S. Department of Education confirmed Tuesday, adding a new flashpoint in the national debate over trans girls’ participation in youth sports.

James Demetriades, the mayor of Cromwell, said the town’s school system could lose nearly $1 million in federal funding if the department determines it’s in violation of Title IX, the federal civil rights law that forbids discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal assistance.

The mayor, a Democrat, said Monday that the school district would be ineligible for the state’s athletic conference if it didn’t allow student athletes to compete on sex-segregated sports teams consistent with their gender identity. He said the district is currently following “all applicable state and federal law as well as the rules for the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference.”

“We don’t know why Cromwell was targeted for this action,” Demetriades said in a statement on Facebook. He said the investigation also includes restroom and locker room usage.

The head of the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights, Craig Trainor, said in a statement that the investigation was looking at whether the district’s policies were “depriving girls and young women of equal athletic opportunities.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon added that, “This Administration will fight on every front to protect women’s and girls’ sports.”

A community of more than 14,000, Cromwell is about 20 minutes south of the capital, Hartford. A rally in support of transgender youth was planned Tuesday evening at Cromwell High School.

In 2019, during President Donald Trump’s first term, the Office for Civil Rights launched an investigation into Connecticut’s policy that allows transgender high school athletes to compete as the gender with which they identify. It followed a complaint filed by the families of three girls, who said they were discriminated against by having to compete in track events against two athletes who were identified as male at birth, including one at Cromwell High School.

A federal appeals court in 2022 dismissed a challenge to Connecticut’s policy. It was later revived and the case is still pending. It could be ready for a trial in 2026.

Days after taking office for his second term, Trump signed an executive order titled “ Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” which states that all funds from educational programs “that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy,” will be rescinded.

In his post, Demetriades asked state officials to help hold the town harmless from liability and intervene if Cromwell is sued by the Department of Justice.

In March, the Department of Education opened an investigation into Portland Public Schools, Oregon’s largest school district, over allowing a transgender athlete to compete on a high school girls’ track-and-field team.

BEMIDJI — Every 45 minutes on a typical warm, sunny Saturday in late May, the echoes of an air horn can be heard through the air near Bemidji High School.

It’s time for eight more games to commence.

Bemidji Youth Soccer has hosted its six-on-six tournament, the Bemidji 6V6, for over a decade. On its surface, it’s a laid-back, family-friendly youth sporting event at a low cost with lower stakes. While that’s by the design of program directors Jeff Mitchell and Rick Toward, it’s helped infuse a culture that’s carrying over generations as former program players now guide their kids through their past footsteps.

“The club has given us the flexibility that not every sport gets to have,” Toward said. “Our 19s team, our oldest team, will essentially be our varsity team. It’s not going to exclusively be that, but a lot of those kids get to play together all summer. That’s an advantage we have over a lot of (Twin Cities) teams, where kids all break up and play for their own clubs.”

Toward, who will enter his 31st season as head coach of the BHS boys soccer team, with Mitchell by his side as a valued assistant, sees the benefit in the continuity Bemidji provides in its coaching.

Players are taught the fundamentals and systems that are used at the boys and girls varsity levels. Toward is using his “same message, different voice” approach to find his leg up on programs that have more players to pull from.

“Our guys get to play together all year long, and there’s an advantage to that,” he added. “Those teams have a depth of talent we will never reach, and that’s their advantage. We have to make do with what we have.

“What grows our program is we are seamless between club soccer and high school soccer. The voice you get in the season is the voice you’re getting in high school. … The success you see in the high school programs and the club’s growth are correlated. It’s a strategy we use in how we approach kids and their development.”

What Bemidji Youth Soccer has is consistency.

Every summer, parents can pencil in four tournaments and the Bemidji 6V6 held at the end of May. Regardless of age, Bemidji teams travel the same places on the same weekends.

“We don’t split up our tournaments,” Mitchell said. “If you have a kid who’s 8 and another who’s 16, they play at the same tournaments. You don’t have to choose which parent goes with which kid, and that’s important for a lot of families. You’re all in one place.”

BYS plays in tournaments around the state, from Grand Forks down to the metro area. So Saturdays like the Bemidji 6V6 give the locals a chance to stay local.

Forty-one teams competed in the Bemidji 6V6, with over 400 players in levels U9 to U19. Each block includes 45 minutes. All games start and end at the same time with the help of an air horn.

The Bemidji 6V6 features Lumberjacks of the past and future, and then some. It is not a requirement that a player needs to be signed up for organized soccer to compete, paving the way for BHS athletes in other sports to lace up their cleats.

It also gives recently graduated Lumberjacks one more chance to play at home. Kids in club soccer can play until they turn 20, meaning the newly-minted alumni can compete the summer after they graduate.

The Bemidji 6V6 ultimately serves as a fundraising effort for BYS. Each road tournament can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $9,000 for the traveling 15-16 Bemidji teams. The Bemidji 6V6 helps fortify the BYS sum, while also going toward funding soccer for underprivileged players.

“The first money that comes out of the pot goes to players who can’t afford the full registration,” Mitchell said. “This covers that cost and the cost for scholarships. … I’d say about $3,000 of that will go toward scholarships for players and jerseys for players who can’t afford them, and so on.”

Ultimately, BYS is a cyclical program. Once players reach the varsity level, they begin serving as coaches for the youngest age groups BYS offers.

Toward attributes the cycle to the culture of soccer at all ages in Bemidji.

“It’s a big part of it,” he said. “It’s stuff like this. It’s also stuff like our rec program on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where we have 250 kids, 4-8 years old, over at the complex. The vast majority of the coaches are high school kids. Harper (Toward) used to play rec as a kid, then coached rec in high school and now is a coach in the club.

“We’re seeing that second generation come through, and that’s part of the environment Jeff and I worked hard to create. We’re a family-friendly organization.”

Gov. Jared Polis on Monday signed a bill into law that will increase the number of young people Colorado can hold in pre-trial detention facilities in emergencies.

Current law allows the state to detain up to 215 teens at any one time, with 22 emergency beds that don’t count towards the bed cap. House Bill 1146 keeps the 215 number the same, but adds an additional 17 emergency beds. These beds can be used only when the state reaches its 215-bed limit.

The Colorado District Attorneys’ Council spearheaded the bipartisan bill, sponsored by Reps. Shannon Bird, D-Westminster, and Dan Woog, R-Frederick, and Sens. Barbara Kirkmeyer, R-Brighton, and Judy Amabile, D-Boulder.

The DA group originally wanted to bump the number of detained youth up to 324, a hike that received forceful pushback from juvenile justice advocates.

Prosecutors argued the state doesn’t have enough beds to house violent youth offenders awaiting trial.

Since fiscal year 2021, detained youth admissions with violent charges have increased by 49%, and admissions for homicide or manslaughter have risen by 80%, state figures show. As a result, prosecutors say, authorities have been forced to release teens who might otherwise be deemed a danger to the public to free up spots for someone else.

Critics countered that the lack of safety in these facilities — highlighted by The Denver Post in March — proves the state should not be dramatically increasing the bed count.

The legislation also includes a body-worn camera pilot program for juvenile detention and commitment staff. The test program in one youth detention facility and one commitment facility requires every staff member who is responsible for the direct supervision of youth to wear a body camera while interacting with them.

McCartney and Mr. Edgar Howell. Your collective efforts continue to strengthen our Ministry and by extension our Departments.

It is with deep reverence, immense pride, and heartfelt gratitude that I bring greetings on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture, as we come together in this sacred moment to honour the life and enduring legacy of a national hero, The Right Excellent James Alexander George Smith McCartney. It is fitting to honor not only the legacy of the nation’s first Chief Minister and only National Hero but also to remember his wife Mrs. Dorothy McCartney, children and family , who continue to uphold his vision and values.

Today is more than a wreath laying ceremony and unveiling of the Moseleum, it is a call to remembrance, yes, but more importantly, it is a call to purpose.

We gather not just to look back at what JAGS McCartney accomplished, but to look forward, inspired by the unshakable principles that he lived and died for justice, equity, education, cultural pride, and national unity.

JAGS was a young man, yet a visionary far beyond his years. At a time when the Turks and Caicos Islands struggled to find its footing in a world shaped by external control, he stood firm, bold, and unrelenting in his belief that we, the people, could define our own destiny.

He believed that the young had a voice, that the poor had worth, and that the voiceless could lead. Through the Junkanoo Club, he created not only a space for political thought but cultural expression. He taught us that freedom is not given, it is earned, it is demanded, it is built. Today, more than ever, we need to be reminded of that truth.

Our country is at a crossroads. We face threats to our cultural identity, social challenges that weigh heavily on our youth, and the global shifts that test the resilience of small island states like ours.

So, what would JAGS say to us now?

He would say: “Don’t wait for the change, be the change.”

He would challenge us to build a country where every child has access to quality education, not just in classrooms, but through the values they absorb in their homes, their communities, and their jobs. He would push us to value our heritage, to preserve our identity, and to champion the strength of unity over division.

We are proud that through the Department of Culture, the JAGS McCartney Memorial Site has been restored and transformed into a space that not only commemorates his life but also educates and empowers. It is now a living classroom, rich in historical insight, vibrant with cultural expression, and deeply rooted in the ideals he fought for. I encourage every family, every school, every citizen, visit the site. Let it speak to you. Let it awaken your purpose.

Let us applaud the efforts of Evina Brooks James, the designer of the Mausoleum and Information Center. Your creativity has brought much richness to JAGS Memorial Site and to our Minister of Technology we appreciate the incorporation of Technology within the mausoleum.

This year, on June 30th, JAGS would have celebrated his 80th birthday. And just recently, on May 9th, we marked 45 years since his tragic and untimely death. But his legacy lives on, not only in history books, but in the hopes and dreams of every young person in our schools today, in the voices of artists, in the advocacy of youth leaders, and in the actions of every citizen who still believes in building a Turks and Caicos Islands that is strong, sovereign, and united.

Let us live it, through our policies, through our parenting, through our education, through our cultural expressions, and through our courage to do what is right, even when it is difficult.

To the elders: continue to share your wisdom. You are the torchbearers of memory.
To the youth: be bold, be curious, be committed. The future belongs to you.
To every citizen: stand up. Speak out. Serve.

Let us honour JAGS, not just with flowers and speeches, but with action. We will continue to build a Turks and Caicos Islands that reflects the greatness he saw in us all. How fitting is it that on a day when we honor his legacy, we also recognize his daughter Yaa McCartney as Acting Attorney General.

Before I take my seat, I must express my sincere gratitude to the dedicated team at the Department of Culture. Acting Director Trazel Prospere, along with Karina Been and Ashanti Morris—your hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed. You truly deserve a round of applause, as I’m sure your efforts today have JAGS smiling down with pride and joy.

At the Department of Culture, we remain committed to working in partnership with all relevant stakeholders to further enhance this space. Our goal is to ensure it continues to be a vibrant hub, embraced by students, the wider community, and the many guests who arrive on our shores by plane and cruise ship.

May JAGS legacy lives on in every classroom, in every festival, in every fight for justice, and in every dream that dares to shape a better tomorrow.
