CHATTANOOGA, TN – Throughout history, people have always asked the question: “what would it be like if Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali met in both their primes?” Comparisons of legends against the latest phenomenon have always left us to ponder the what ifs. Unfortunately, we don’t have a Tyson vs. Ali heavyweight match up but we did have some fun this week putting together a flat out drag race between a low tech for this day and age 1971 Dodge Challenger and a 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack Electric.
On paper the numbers suggest this could be an equal race. The 71 weights a thousand pounds less and has 150HP more than the new contender, but the future has some advantages. Electric motors don’t have the same torque curve the old school Hemi has. Every bit of power and torque is available the second you touch the throttle. Just for fun we ran them against each other few times and the old school charger ended up with some fuel pressure issues that wouldn’t let us declare an overall winner.
We did bring in two guests to help with our High Tech vs. Low Tech grudge match. Edward Parker from Mtn. View Dodge and Matt Welch owner of Pandora’s European Motorsports.
The new Charger impressed me, and even the engine sounds I felt like fit. The car sounds like something from Tron. “It’s got 670 horsepower, 627 pound feet of torque. And as an instantaneous, it’s also got which we just tested, a PowerShot, which gives you an immediate 40 more horsepower at the front as you hit the gas or not. The gas pedal, the electric pedal,” says Parker.
Matt has raced motorcycles professionally, and worked for various teams in Nascar and the Indy car series. We talked about the future of racing and how the next generation will never have the frustration of rebuilding a carburetor and they will end up programming cars on laptops and devices instead. I had to ask with his experience, do you thin we will ever see an all-electric Daytona 500 or Indy 500? “I don’t know that we will see a, race of that caliber that’s all electric. Maybe in my kids lifetime, but maybe not ours,” says Matt. “We’re definitely headed that direction. I think in five years, half of my showroom will be electric. I think half of your showroom will be electric. Like it or not, it’s coming.”
Comparing this new tech to the low tech, I can take the engine out and have any performance shop in the world rebuild. I can make upgrades, changes and ultimately make it a street cruiser or full out race car. But what happens when the motors or batteries die in the electric?
“You have to bring it back to the dealership. Once you’re done with it. The dealership will send it back to the factory to where it’s basically recycled, and they’ll take the parts that are good and refurbished them and then put them back out, parts. But it’s completely recyclable. You can’t turn around and rebuild it like we can these like the carburetors. There’s nothing you can do with that” says Parker.
My personal concern with electric cars is that it will be similar to your cellphone and will have to be upgraded and replaced every few years. The technology is obviously still too new to be sure, but like it or not – electric cars are most likely here to stay.

McCumbee McAleer Racing’s Nate Cicero, making only his second career start in IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, won the pole Saturday morning (July 12) for the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park 120 with a lap at 107.709 mph. It is the first career pole for the Mustang Challenge racer.
Cicero won the pole by .289 seconds over CarBahn Motorsports with Peregrine Racing’s Sean McAlister. Team TGM’s Paul Holton will start third in his Aston Martin, then Ibiza Farm Motorsports’ Moisey Uretsky. KohR Motorsports’ Bob Michaelian will start fifth.
Once the teams got up to speed, it was Cicero, making his season debut with the team, that was fastest early on. Holton gave chase.
Holton was able to improve shortly afterwards, but couldn’t quite match Cicero. McAlister also showed good pace in his BMW.
Later on in the session, Cicero was able to improve his time with what ultimately ended up being the overall pole. On that lap, he set the overall fastest second sector. Despite the faster lap times, this was the only one of the three sectors in which a Grand Sport car was fastest overall.
The rest of the GS pack tried their best to match Cicero, but none could do so. McAlister improved to second late, but the Mustang ended up with the pole.
In TCR qualifying, Montreal Motorsport Group asserted themselves once again. Louis-Phillippe Montour put his Honda Civic Type-R TCR on the provisional pole early in the session, the first TCR lap of the entire weekend in the 82-second bracket at the time.
During Practice No. 2 Friday afternoon, Montour was eight-tenths of a second ahead of the field. Not so much here.
Here, Montour had competition, first from Bryan Herta Autosport teammates Bryson Morris and Harry Gottsacker, then from Baker Racing’s Sam Baker.
Baker was able to get within four-hundredths of a second of Montour, but couldn’t get closer. On the final lap of the session, Morris turned in a lap at 106.761 mph to win the TCR pole.
Morris’ lap, which ultimately ended up sixth overall, was four-hundredths of a second faster than Montour. Baker will start third, then Gottsacker and Victor Gonzalez Racing Team’s Eric Powell.
There were no red flags during the session. However, Czabok Simpson Racing’s Harrison Goodman slid off-course and hit the tires at Moss Corner. That caused a delay in the action after the session, but did not cost him his best time.
The Canadian Tire Motorsport Park 120 is scheduled to go green at 1:25 p.m. ET Saturday afternoon. The race will stream live on both the IMSA Official YouTube channel and Peacock starting at 1:20 p.m. ET.

The NASCAR Cup Series begins the Sonoma race weekend with practice and qualifying on July 12 for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
Shane van Gisbergen has won the last two road course races and heads to Sonoma with a chance to tie the series lead in victories.
The playoff picture would not be materially impacted by another SVG win, but AJ Allmendinger, Ty Gibbs and Michael McDowell are among those not in a playoff spot that have shown plenty of speed on road courses.

Valentino Catalano Wins CTMP VP Racing Challenge Race No. 1

GEBHARDT Interlogistics Motorsports’ Valentino Catalano was able to run down and take the lead away Saturday morning (July 12) from MLT Motorsports’ Jonathan Woolridge less than 10 minutes into the race. From there, he was able to hold on to IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge Race No. 1 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. For Catalano, it’s his fourth win of the season in seven races.
Catalano won by 2.331 seconds over Woolridge. Turner Motorsport’s Jake Walker was third, then Forte Racing’s Brian Thienes. Wright Motorsports’ Adam Adelson was fifth.
Woolridge started from the overall pole in his Ligier JS P320-Nissan. With home track knowledge in his back pocket, he managed to pull away early from GEBHARDT Interlogistics Motorsports’ Valentino Catalano and Oscar Tunjo.
However, the pace advantage over the two GEBHARDT-entered Duqueines was short-lived. As soon as Woolridge caught the back of the field, Catalano and Tunjo ran him down in a hurry.
Catalano was able to make the move to the outside on the Mario Andretti Straightaway a little under 10 minutes to take the lead from Woolridge. Once out front, Catalano slowly began to pull away.
Tunjo was eventually able to get past Woolridge for second, then ran down his teammate from a couple of seconds back. By halfway, the duo were running nose to tail.
However, just as soon he got to Catalano, disaster struck. The left front wheel decided that it didn’t want to stick around anymore. The wheel came off on the pit straight and went down the hill and hit the tire barrier in turn 1. Tunjo pulled to a stop right next to it to bring out the safety car.
The green came back out with less than 10 minutes to go. From here, Catalano opened up a comfortable advantage and held on to take the win.
Turner Motorsport’s Jake Walker started from the GTDX pole in his BMW M4 GT3, but he came under almost immediate pressure from AF Corse’s AJ Muss. Muss tried on the first lap to get past, but just couldn’t do so.
It turned out that the first lap was his only real opportunity to get it down. Once everyone got into a rhythm, Walker was roughly a second a lap faster than Muss. As a result, it didn’t take long for Walker to have a lead of over 10 seconds.
Further back, Walker’s teammate Vin Barletta had contact with the GSX Porsche of Angus Rogers in Moss Corner, spinning Rogers out. That resulted in a drive-through penalty for Barletta that ultimately cost him a lap
The caution brought everyone back together, but Walker had a number of slower GSX cars between himself and Muss. Muss had to deal with Wright Motorsports’ Adam Adelson instead. The two battled hard for second and even made contact on the pit straight, resulting in debris coming off of Adelson’s Porsche.
That contact did not go unpunished. IMSA stewards determined that Muss was at fault for the contact and assessed him a 10-second post-race penalty.
Meanwhile, Walker drove away from the pack to take the win. It is his fourth win in the last five races.
Walker’s margin of victory was 12.440 seconds over Adelson. Yes, Muss beat Adelson to the line, but the penalty knocked him back to third. ST Racing’s Samantha Tan was fourth.
RAFA Racing Team’s Kiko Porto started from the GSX pole. He was able to open a small gap on the rest of the class. Meanwhile, BSI Racing’s Steven Clemons was able to get past Ian Porter for second.
Even with the caution bringing everyone back together, Porto was never seriously threatened en route to his fifth win of the year.
The margin of victory was 8.597 seconds over Clemons. Twoth Autosport’s Chris Walsh was third, then Justin Di Benedetto. Rebel Rock Racing’s Frank DePew was fifth.
Porter was running third in class, but had a mechanical problem on the final lap of the race. He ended up finishing eighth.
Race No. 2 for VP Racing SportsCar Challenge is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. ET Sunday morning. The race will be streamed live on both the IMSA Official YouTube channel and on Peacock.

Sonoma Raceway is set to continue NASCAR’s recent run of races on road and street courses, with Sunday afternoon’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 Cup Series race set to be the third non-oval race in the last five weeks.
Qualifying for Sunday’s 110-lap race around the 12-turn, 1.99-mile (3.203-kilometer) Sonoma, California road course is set to utilize a relatively straightforward format, though this format differs from what has been used at Sonoma in previous years.
First of all, the qualifying metric that was used from 2020 to 2024 has been scrapped. Before the 2025 season began, the four-variable formula was replaced by a much simpler two-variable formula, which is broken down in more detail here.
The drivers who have higher (worse) scores are set to qualify in the first timed group, while those who have lower (better) scores are set to qualify in the second.
The results of both groups are simply combined to determine the full 37-car starting lineup, with no more row-by-row designations based on group and no more second round shootout for the pole position.
