The NBA debuted its NBA Finals promotional campaign Sunday with a cinematic 86-second spot that is part-nostalgia, part-“Simon Says” and a spice of Hollywood. Set to Nat King Cole‘s “Unforgettable,” the commercial canvasses many of the league’s iconic Finals moments while various fans — including Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Costner and Tony Award-winning actress Mindy Kaling — replicate the scenes in their daily lives.

Directed by Paul Geusebroek and produced in collaboration with the creative agency Translation, “Unforgettable Awaits” has Magic Johnson’s 1985 “Junior Sky Hook” imitated by Costner sky-hooking a coffee cup into a trash can and Steph Curry’s “night night” pose copy-catted by Kaling after she defeats her father Avu in a game of ping pong.

Other moments include two fans mirroring Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray’s celebration fall into a pool; a man imitating LeBron James’ chase-down block by leaping to touch a street cross-walk timer; a fan emulating Michael Jordan’s last Finals shot by shooting an ice cube into a gin and tonic cup; two people doing a Shaq and Kobe hug; and a father hoisting their child the way Jayson Tatum hoisted his after the Celtics’ title last season.

Under CMO Tammy Henault, the NBA has taken a Hollywood film approach to its Finals campaigns. Each of the previous two campaigns —“We’re All In the Finals’’ in 2023 and “The Toast’’ in 2024, where HOF Dwyane Wade toasts the arrival of the Finals like a guest at a Gatsby-like party — were nominated for Sports Emmys. But Henault said this year’s iteration was intentionally more emotional.

“We really lean into three hooks,” Henault said. “We wanted to really elevate this notion of witnessing history … And then really capture that Finals feeling. So that was sort of the planned direction. And also to make sure we capture nostalgia … But make it pointing forward versus necessarily pointing it backwards, which is what you can do when sometimes you’re looking at iconic, historic moments.”

The spot is initially scheduled to air during Sunday’s Nuggets-Thunder Game 7 that begins at 3:30pm ET, and will then be rolled out across all NBA social and digital platforms, including the NBA App. A simultaneous print, digital, audio and out-of-home campaign will also be released globally.

Filmed in L.A., the highlight may have been Coster’s version of the Junior Sky Hook, which he made on the first attempt. Henault also said Kaling’s ping-pong match against her father was real and competitive, which helped legitimize the commercial’s tone.

“The Finals are the finals, right?,” Henault said. “It has its own logo. We lean into this really cinematic, black and gold visual at all times. It is the top moment of the season in terms of what we’re building towards all season long. And we take extra care in making sure that comes across in making the campaign feel extra special. So it is a top priority.”

A new era is about to begin for Nebraska volleyball. The top-ranked Huskers will head into the season with a new coach leading the way in Dani Busboom Kelly, but the expectations have not changed.

To get you ready for the 2025 campaign, we’re running through the expanded roster and breaking down all the key players, starting with the defensive specialists, a group that features one of the most competitive position battles on the team.

Roster

>> Laney Choboy: Junior, 5’3”, Raleigh, N.C.

>> Olivia Mauch: Sophomore, 5’6”, Bennington, Neb.

>> Keri Leimbach: Freshman, 5’4”, Lincoln, Neb.

>> Maisie Boesiger: Senior, 5’6”, Firth, Neb.

Breakdown

There’s been competition at every position for Nebraska this offseason, but the one that’s drawn the most attention is likely the battle to see who succeeds Lexi Rodriguez as Nebraska’s libero.

While NCAA rules now allow multiple players to don the libero jersey in the same game and rotate for each other, Dani Busboom Kelly has said she prefers the consistency of a single player in that role, and according to the players and coaches, that battle has been a toss-up all offseason.

Junior Laney Choboy spent the past two seasons in a defensive specialist role playing alongside Rodriguez. She averaged 1.82 digs per set as a freshman and 1.53 as a sophomore last year, totaling 73 assists with 14 aces across 70 career matches. Choboy’s reel of highlight defensive plays would be extensive, and she’s steadily improved her passing over the past two seasons.

After the Alumni Match, Busboom Kelly praised Choboy among others for the way she elevated her play in pressure moments

“I thought Laney, sometimes her play is not super, super smooth, but her presence just helps us a ton,” Busboom Kelly said.

Olivia Mauch, the 2023 Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year out of Bennington, made an immediate impact as a defensive specialist last year as well. She played in all 36 matches and averaged 1.61 digs per set with 21 services aces and 13 assists. Mauch graded out as the top returning player in serve receive according to VolleyMetrics and also made strides in her defensive play as she settled in throughout the season.

Both players put on a show during the Red-White Scrimmage. Choboy totaled 17 digs and five assists for the victorious Red squad while Mauch finished with 16 assists, five digs and one ace for the White team.

“I thought they both played great, really good,” Busboom Kelly said after the scrimmage. “Passed well, dug a lot of balls. They were very solid … They’re both neck-and-neck every day, so you can probably flip a coin. It’s going to be a lot about who can command the court and who makes the little plays look easy.”

Former head coach John Cook served as color commentator during the team’s spring exhibition against Kansas, and during the broadcast he said Busboom Kelly told him the libero decision would likely come down to personality and which of them fits what the team needs most.

“They both go about it their own way,” Harper Murray said after the exhibition. “I think Liv is a little bit more like Lexi as a person, a little bit more quiet and reserved, but they both have their own way about it, and it’s special, no matter how they’re going to do it.”

The stream of talented defensive specialists to come through Lincoln doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon with Keri Leimbach, a four-time state champion at Lincoln Lutheran, joining the program in the spring.

She averaged 6.0 digs per set and served 54 aces as a senior, finishing her high school career with 2,063 digs. Leimbach could push for immediate playing time much like Mauch did last year, depending on how many of Nebraska’s pins play six rotations. Nebraska’s former head coach, John Cook, had high praise for Leimbach back in the spring when he served as color commentator for Big Ten Network during the program’s exhibition against Kansas.

“Keri’s been really solid,” Busboom Kelly said. “She’s got a great serve, and she’s really confident at the libero position, especially with being a freshman and having two great liberos in front of her in Liv and Laney. She just goes in there and she doesn’t miss a beat.”

Maisie Boesiger, the walk-on out of Norris, is heading into her senior year and will continue to provide depth at defensive specialist. She’s appeared in 90 sets across 50 matches, primarily as a serving specialist, and has totaled 36 digs, six aces and six assists.

Houston volleyball posted its fourth consecutive season with at least 20 wins going 21-12-3 last season.

The consistency in the win column has reflected the consistency in offseason work the players put in.

“Our kids have really bought into the weight room and put in the work in the offseason,” Houston head coach Julia Sloan said. “They know that it is an expectation. They are consistently working to compete every night and not settling for being mediocre.”

Five players who saw action in at least 99 of the 103 sets last season return along with a sixth player who played in 59 varsity sets.

Kayla Wagner returns after leading Houston in kills with 357 and finishing second in assists with 342. She had a part in 74% of Houston’s kills last year either as the hitter or setter.

“She can do it all. She sees the floor so well and has such a high volleyball IQ,” Sloan said. “She is our captain along with Gracyn McNiell. Kayla really stepped into that role last year and led our team. She takes her role very seriously and will do anything possible to help us better as a team.”

McNiell is a senior libero who led Houston with 591 receptions and 381 digs.

“Gracyn is the most hard-nosed kid you will meet,” Sloan said. “She is such a hard worker and will not let anyone outwork her. She will do anything for her team and is just a great kid.”

Kynlee Weaver, the team’s leader in total blocks with 35, returns to her spot at middle hitter for her senior season.

“She has made great strides this offseason,” Sloan said of Weaver.

Senior defensive specialist Annabelle Westbrook brings a vocal presence with her defense.

“Annabelle is a very vocal piece to our team,” Sloan said. “I’m expecting big things out of her this season.”

Carli Cummins-Drake (senior DS) and Hannah Ennis (senior OH) will compete for varsity sets this season after seeing time last season.

Millie Manier is a freshman who could make an immediate impact as an outside or right side hitter.

“As an incoming freshman, Millie has shown a lot of promise as a younger player,” Sloan said. “I am expecting her to get quite a bit of playing time this season.”

Claire Benoist (sophomore setter), Hally Sheets (junior middle hitter) Arianna Flores (junior RS), Adyson Dailing (junior OH) and Olivia Ice (junior MH) are newcomers to watch.

Sloan on Benoist: “Claire is going to be our other setter. Claire is such a good kid that will work her tail off. She has great hands, and I am excited to see how much she grows this season.”

Sloan on Sheets: “She is a 6-foot-1 middle who has worked really hard this offseason to earn her a spot this year. I am expecting great things from her this season.”

Sloan on Flores: “Ari is a six-foot right side for us. She has really impressed me these last few weeks of offseason. She is really stepping into her role well.”

Sloan on Dailing: “Adyson can jump out of a gym. I am expecting her to see some floor time this year.”

The chemistry is strong among this senior-heavy roster.

“All these girls just get along,” Sloan said. “They all are pretty close on and off the court. We also have six seniors, so they bring a lot of leadership and experience to the court. We are also very tall upfront. I feel that will help lead us to success this year.”

Houston hosts a jamboree on Aug. 26 with Cabool and Willow Springs before opening the regular season on Sept. 4 at Steelville.

“Night in and night out I want us to compete,” Sloan said. “The SCA has lots of great volleyball and every night is a fight. Always the goal is to finish in the top of the conference and then strive for a postseason run.”

Top 5 returning outsides for the 2025 volleyball season

The countdown continues with four days remaining until the 2025 women’s volleyball season. Here are my top five returning outside hitters:

CATCH UP: Top 5 returning middles

1. Brooklyn Deleye, Kentucky

I have Kentucky’s 2024 SEC Player of the Year, Brooklyn DeLeye, in my number one spot. Her numbers are unbelievable: 5.59 points and 4.87 kills per set. She led the Wildcats with 56 aces on the season and .78 blocks per set during her sophomore year campaign. DeLeye is a true six-rotation player who can just dominate a game, which is something she repeatedly proved last season.

2. Harper Murray, Nebraska

Next, I have Nebraska’s Harper Murray. The 2023 Big Ten Freshmen of the Year is probably the best passing outside on this list while registering 59.2% in system last season with over 2.4 digs and four points per set. Murray has plenty of veteran experience under the bright lights and knows how to turn it on in big moments. She no doubt has that “it” factor as a player.

HUSKERS ON TOP: Preseason power 10 rankings

3. Torrey Stafford, Texas

Torrey Stafford

The new Longhorn, Torrey Stafford, makes the list at number three. I think the most impressive part of Stafford’s game is her hitting efficiency. She posted a .358 hitting percentage last season at Pitt and at least .400 in 15 games while averaging 4.2 points per set. She’s got some incredibly impressive numbers to boast about for an outside and will likely get a lot more sets at Texas.

OFFSEASON MOVES: Check out which teams won the 2025 transfer portal

4. Eva Hudson, Kentucky

Eva Hudson, Kentucky

Eva Hudson, now at Kentucky, is a no-brainer to make the list after watching her play. Even her numbers alone speak for themselves. Hudson led the Big Ten last season at Purdue with 567 kills and 4.81 kills per set. She posted 5.2 points per set, while hitting almost .300 during her junior year campaign. The 2022 Big Ten Freshmen of the Year is the complete package: a powerful swing, great shot selection, and a strong blocking presence at the net. Paired with Brooklyn DeLeye, the Wildcats are looking very dangerous this season.

5. Elia Rubin, Stanford

Rounding out my top five, I have Elia Rubin at Stanford. The two-time Pac-12 champion brings back so much valuable experience on the outside to lead the Cardinal in her senior season. Rubin is a versatile player who makes a difference everywhere on the court, averaging over 4.5 points per set and passing 54% in system. This veteran may just be the difference maker for Stanford.

STANFORD AND OTHER TOP TEAMS SET TO KICKOFF 2025 SEASON at the AVCA First Serve

HM. Mimi Colyer, Wisconsin

Mimi Colyer

Mimi Colyer, now at Wisconsin, is my top honorable mention and just barely missed my top five. She comes to Madison boasting 3.97 kills and 4.73 points per set, with five 20-kills performances and nine double-doubles from her junior season at Oregon. The 2022 AVCA Freshmen of the Year is another firepower six-rotation player that brings key experience to the Badgers.

WHO’S GOT NEXT? 11 players that aren’t talked about enough
