University of South Dakota alumnus Trevor Sinclair, who graduated in 2024, gained invaluable experience through Coyote Business Consulting. Now, as an associate financial adviser at Elgethun Capital Management, he’s helping the next generation of students access the same opportunities that helped shape his own career path.

Driven by a desire to make the most of his college years, Sinclair immersed himself in campus involvement.

In addition to competing on the men’s swimming and diving team, Sinclair could be found leading Coyote Crazies, holding roles in the Student Government Association and helping offices and departments like the Office of Outreach & Multicultural Affairs, Athletics and Marketing Communications & University Relations.

As a busy economics and data analytics student-athlete with a packed schedule, Sinclair didn’t have the time to take on an internship. But he still wanted real-world experience that could help stack his resume.

The Beacom School of Business’ Coyote Business Consulting program presented Sinclair with the ideal opportunity.

“Coyote Business Consulting allowed me to work directly with real businesses and business owners in South Dakota while still staying involved on campus,” Sinclair said. “It gave me a way to earn income and gain experience that would set me apart after graduation.”

Pairing student teams with South Dakota businesses, Coyote Business Consulting serves a dual purpose – connecting businesses with motivated student-consultants to solve a critical problem for their organization and providing those students with hands-on experience and financial support.

Sinclair worked on two major projects through Coyote Business Consulting. In the spring of 2023, he worked with Fernson Brewing Co. in Sioux Falls on a marketing initiative and Google Analytics – projects that allowed him to combine his creative instincts with his analytical training.

The next semester, Sinclair worked with Sanford Sports and USD alumnus Steve Young, who earned his bachelor’s degree  in 2001 and his master’s in 2003, on a large-scale economic study examining the impact of Sanford’s youth sports offerings.

“It was really cool to work with a USD alum,” Sinclair said. “Steve was very engaged and interested in how data could help them advocate for more support, attract more tournaments and better understand their economic footprint.”

Sinclair credits his USD experience – and the connections he made through the Coyote network – with setting the foundation to his career.

His introduction to Elgethun Capital Management came through the President’s Senior Leadership Institute at USD, where he met his now-boss, Conrad Adam, a 2018 USD graduate, during an event in which Adam was a panelist.

Additionally, Sinclair met ECM president and owner John Barker, a 2007 USD graduate, through Coyote Athletics.

“All roads to my current job led through USD,” Sinclair said. “I’m very grateful for the university.”

Now on the other side of the table, Sinclair served as adviser to the ECM-sponsored Coyote Business Consulting project this spring. He collaborated with Beacom School of Business students on marketing and data analytics projects for the investment firm, offering them not only mentorship but also an insight into life after graduation.

“We wanted to tap into the expertise of Beacom’s marketing and analytics students,” Sinclair said. “The students helped us think critically about how we market our services and how we can better use data to serve our clients.”

For Sinclair, giving back to Coyote Business Consulting has been a full-circle moment.

“It’s a great opportunity to give students what you wish you had when you were in their shoes,” he said. “Real-world experience builds confidence. It shows students they can provide real value to businesses even before they graduate. Programs like Coyote Business Consulting allow students to stack meaningful experience during school.”

Canadian youth hockey team investigating after its coach, ex-NHL enforcer Nick Tarnasky, goes viral in golf course fight video

If you are going to belligerently pick a fight with someone on a golf course, it is typically advisable to make sure that person is not a former NHL enforcer. Because then you might have a bad time.

Video of a rather one-sided fight at Alberta Springs Golf Resort went viral on Tuesday, and it was later confirmed that one of its participants was former NHL player Nick Tarnasky. The 40-year-old Tarnasky played five seasons in the NHL for three different teams.

The video shows Tarnasky’s group arguing with a pair of apparently drunk men about pace of play. Some harsh words — “You’re not that tough,” “Pick your s*** up and get going” — leads to one of the men repeatedly yelling “F***ing cry about it” at Tarnasky and challenging him.

(Warning: Explicit language.)

The man shoves Tarnasky, who proceeds to throw him into a water hazard (comment from one observer: “Off to a good start, buddy”). The man emerges from the lake and approaches Tarnasky again, at which point Tarnasky grabs him by the shirt collar NHL fight-style and punches him twice in the face, yelling “Bang” after each hit. The other man steps in and tries to push Tarnasky away, but gets shoved aside.

Undeterred, despite another heckle of “I wouldn’t keep coming back you f***ing moron,” the man challenges Tarnasky again and receives three more “Bangs!” Tarnasky yells “Enough!” at him, but he gets up, runs at Tarnasky again and gets thrown a good 10 feet away.

Finally, the man’s friend manages to get him to walk away, while Tarnasky yells, “I asked him to f***ing get moving, I said stop looking like an idiot.”

A decade and a half removed from his last NHL game, Tarnasky currently works as the under-17 coach for Red Deer Minor Hockey in Alberta. Via the Canadian Press, the team released a statement acknowledging the video and saying it is conducting an internal investigation into the incident:

“We are aware of a video circulating on social media involving a coach with Red Deer Minor Hockey,” the organization said in a statement. “At this time, given that we understand the matter is being reviewed by local policing authorities and we are conducting our own internal investigation into the alleged incident, we will have no further comments.”

While the team said the matter is being reviewed by local authorities, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it’s not investigating the incident. Officers reportedly received a third-party report about the fight, but the complainant left before police arrived:

“It was essentially a report of a fight and an intoxicated individual,” Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, a public information officer with the RCMP in Central Alberta, said. “Nobody came forward to us alleging an assault or anything like that, and our investigation was concluded.”

Tarnasky was listed at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds in his playing days and was announced to be remaining with Red Deer two months ago. You can see some of his previous work here, from when he was playing for the New York Rangers in preseason.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – The Chairman of Lawton’s Youth Sports Authority, Brian Henry, spoke with 7News Anchor Dan Threlkeld for a live interview to discuss ongoing development for the city of Lawton’s youth sports complex.

Henry said the project recently cleared a milestone and is moving steadily through its phases.

“The Trust Authority approved the design development phase, actually last Monday,” Henry said. “So there are five phases of the project. Schematic, design, development, construction, drawings, and then bidding and construction. So we just passed the second phase. We now are in the third phase, which we anticipate being about sixty days.”

INDIANAPOLIS — Thousands of young fans gathered at the Fever game Wednesday, eagerly awaiting a chance for a Caitlin Clark autograph.

“We are big Fever fans! We love coming here,” said one excited fan.

Kids from across the Hoosier State filled the stands, cheering for their favorite players. “It’s fun! I like to watch basketball!” Youssef Samaan screamed.

Wednesday’s match against the Golden State Valkyries was special. Dubbed “Kids Day,” the WNBA event invites summer camps to attend a day game, making it more accessible for all children to see live basketball.

Carrie Crandley, from Heartland Hall Child Development Center in Carmel, shared that this was their eighth year participating in Kids Day.

“It’s important for the kids to see what we are all about. It’s excitement, and it’s a great place for them to get all their energy out while becoming part of Indiana Fever basketball,” Crandley said.

Among those in attendance was Clark, making her anticipated return following an injury.

“She’s the best player,” fan Abigail Workman screamed, highlighting her impact on the game and its viewers. Hazel Rickard from Little Red Door Cancer Agency said with a smile on her face, “I’m excited.”

Before the game, Clark reflected on the importance of allowing kids to see women’s sports.

“I think it’s really cool for them to be able to see how amazing it is and have role models they can look up to,” she said.

As the game came to a close, spectators recognized that this experience could open doors for the young fans.

“It’s important to get kids out from behind the T.V. Let them be kids, have fun, and if you make it fun, learning is really easy,” added Crandley.

Despite the Fever’s loss, the day was about more than just basketball.

“I just hope they have a wonderful time. That this is the best day of their summer,” Clark said.

Kids Day continues to serve as a tradition within the WNBA, offering summer camps from across Indiana a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of live basketball.
