INDIANAPOLIS — As Hinchman Racing Uniforms hits its 100th anniversary, the air is thick with nostalgia, pride, and an unwavering commitment to safety in motorsports. The story of the family-run business is not just about crafting high-quality racing suits; it’s about generations, tradition and the bonds formed through a shared passion.
Just down the street from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway you’ll find Hinchman Racing Uniforms. Fitting, the long time small business is nestled away on gasoline alley.
Hinchman has been stitching safety and tradition into the fabric of motorsports for 100 years.

“They started at their kitchen table,” said Joe Whisler, the general manager for Hinchman, reflecting on the origin story of the Hinchman family.
They turned their passion for racing into a thriving business after being laid off from a garment factory in downtown Indianapolis.
Nancy Chumbley, the current owner, recalls the family’s dedication to the sport and the sacrifices made along the way. “I can not tell you how much time, effort, sweat, blood tears he put into making sure that he had the best suit that was out there on the market,” Chumbley said.

Since making their first suit for Indy 500 winner Peter DePaolo in 1925, Hinchman has tailored uniforms for countless drivers, including legends like A.J. Foyt and Jeff Gordon. It’s living history every day.
Reflecting on the journey of Hinchman Racing, Whisler noted, “When you grow up in the Indianapolis area, going to races—watching my dad and the likes of Bob Kenser in Hinchman suits—it’s like a dream come true to be part of this family tradition. Making suits and deciding what materials go into them is something I never imagined I’d get to do.”

The emotional weight of this legacy was felt in discussions about drivers who have benefited from the protective gear created by Hinchman. One account detailed a scary incident at the Chili Bowl. “Ed Frye was in a fire at the Chili Bowl, and he came out unscathed with just a few little burn wounds on,” Whisler said.
Such testimonies underline the commitment to safety that continues to define Hinchman. “As a racer, you’re not really thinking about it. It’s not at the front of your mind. You want to look cool, but you trust the people who are making those suits for you,” Whisler explained. “That’s why people remain loyal to us—they know us.”
The company’s origin story is equally compelling. Whisler recounted the humble beginnings: “Pop Henchman worked at a garment factory downtown Indianapolis called Lewis Meyer company. When the stock market crashed in ’29—many of them got laid off. They sat around for just a short bit and thought, ‘Well, what do we have that we know how to do? We know how to make clothes.’” This determination and ingenuity led to the creation of Hinchman Racing Uniforms from a meager $6.

As the company has adapted, the design of the suits has drastically evolved. “Originally, the suits were really heavy, very bulky. As innovation has taken place, the materials are much lighter,” Chumbley explained. “Now we have multi-layer suits where the layers are way lighter than they were in the past, allowing for better breathability and comfort.”
Watching drivers take to the track while wearing their suits elicits a mix of pride and anxiety for Chumbley. “For me, they’re all like my kids. If something goes awry, I’m a basket case. However, I do feel very confident,” she said. “I’ve had people call and say, ‘I’m so glad I had your suit on; you saved my life.’”

Reflecting on the company’s rich history, Chumbley remarked, “It means a lot, the company, the legacy, the name. Whenever anyone says Hinchman, they know they’re getting quality and safety.” With four generations of racers gracing their custom suits, the tradition is firmly rooted in family and care.
Hinchman Racing Uniforms remains committed to maintaining high standards of craftsmanship, handcrafting each suit in-house. “We take care of our customers. We’re one of the few that still produce their suits in the United States,” Chumbley stated. “Everything is personally inspected before it goes out the door.”
In an industry known for flash, Hinchman focuses on blending aesthetic appeal with safety. “If you look good in your suit, it reflects well on us. That’s what we strive for—making our drivers feel confident and looking their best,” Chumbley added.

Charlotte Storylines and Insights:
· This weekend marks the 23rd running of a NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, one race per season since 2003.
· This weekend’s Truck race break up into three stages: Lap 30, Lap 60, Lap 134.
· This is race 11 of 25 in the 2025 season. There are eight races left in the regular season.
· Charlotte is a home race for all the truck teams but two: ThorSport Racing in Sandusky, OH and Rackley W.A.R. in Centerville, TN.
· This is the fifth and final race on 1.5-mile tracks for the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series in 2025.
· The last seven CRAFTSMAN Truck Serie races at Charlotte were won by different drivers.
· The #07 and #7 Spire trucks won two of the last three races on 1.5-mile tracks.
· Corey Heim won four of the last eight 1.5-mile track races, he has not gone more than one race without a win during that time (if the pattern continues, he will win at Charlotte).
· The driver who led the most laps won six of the last nine 1.5-mile track races.
· Five of 10 races in 2025 had a pass for the win in the last five laps.
· Three last lap passes for the win in the first 10 races is tied for the most all time.
· Tyler Ankrum ended a 130-race winless streak at Rockingham, the most starts between wins in Truck series history.

· Corey Heim is the only driver to lead in all 10 races in 2025.

NASCAR & Charlotte, Etc.
Historical & Significant Events at Charlotte Motor Speedway:
· Charlotte Motor Speedway was designed and built in 1959 by Chairman Emeritus and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee O. Bruton Smith. The late Curtis Turner, one of stock car racing’s earliest stars and another Hall of Fame inductee, served as Smith’s primary business partner.
· Smith, a native of Oakboro, N.C., was an automobile dealer and short-track stock car racing promoter at Concord Motor Speedway and the Charlotte Fairgrounds.
· Turner, a Virginian who amassed his money in the lumber industry, became one of the first drivers on the NASCAR circuit after the sanctioning body debuted in 1949.
· Together, they built their dream of a 1.5-mile superspeedway on the outskirts of the Queen City and, on June 19, 1960, the first World 600 was contested at the new facility.
· In 1961, like many superspeedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales. After his departure from the speedway in 1962, Smith pursued other business interests in Texas and Illinois. Working within Ford Motor Company’s dealership program, Smith became quite successful and began purchasing shares of stock in Charlotte Motor Speedway. By 1975 Smith had again become the majority stockholder in the speedway, regaining control of its day-to-day operations.
· He hired H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler as general manager and the two began to implement plans for needed improvements and expansion.
· During the ensuing years, Smith and Wheeler demonstrated a commitment to customer satisfaction, building a facility that continuously established new industry standards. Thousands of grandstand seats and luxury suites were built. Food concessions and restroom facilities were added and modernized to increase the comfort of race fans. Smith Tower, a 135,000-square-foot, seven-story facility connected to the speedway’s grandstands, was erected and opened in 1988. The building houses the speedway’s corporate offices, ticket office, souvenir gift shop, leased office space and The Speedway Club, an exclusive dining and entertainment facility.
· In 1984, under the direction of Smith, Charlotte Motor Speedway became the only sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations when it built 40 condominiums high above turn one. Twelve additional condominium units were added in 1991.
· Another innovation was a $1.7 million, 1,200-fixture permanent lighting system developed by MUSCO Lighting of Oskaloosa, Iowa. The revolutionary lighting process uses mirrors to simulate daylight without glare, shadows or obtrusive light poles.
· The lighting system was installed in 1992, allowing Charlotte Motor Speedway to be the first modern superspeedway to host night auto racing.
· Ever cognizant of the competitors as well as the spectators, the speedway added a new $1 million, 20,000-square-foot NASCAR Cup Series garage area in 1994.
· Other additions and improvements include the development of the speedway’s 2,000-plus acres. In addition to the speedway, the property, some of which is leased, includes an industrial park that serves as home to several motorsports-related businesses, a modern landfill facility operated by BFI and a natural wildlife habitat.
· In addition to the 1.5-mile quad oval, the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex includes a 2.25-mile road course and a six-tenths-mile karting layout in the speedway’s infield; a quarter-mile asphalt oval utilizing part of the speedway’s frontstretch and pit road; and a one-fifth-mile oval located outside Turn 3 of the superspeedway.
· Two NASCAR Cup Series races, two NASCAR Xfinity Series races and one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race are among the major events held at the speedway. The Richard Petty Driving Experience and the NASCAR Racing Experience also use the track extensively throughout the year.
· Other events on the various tracks include a summer short-track series for Legend Cars and Bandoleros and World Karting Association regional, national and international races.
· In May 2000, The Dirt Track at Charlotte, a state-of-the-art, four-tenths-mile clay oval was completed across U.S. 29 from the speedway. The stadium-style facility has nearly 14,000 seats and plays host to Dirt Late Models, Modifieds, Sprint Cars, Monster Trucks and the prestigious World of Outlaws World Finals.

· U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will join military representatives from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Navy, to serve as grand marshals for the 66th running of the Coca-Cola 600 when NASCAR returns to America’s Home for Racing on the eve of Memorial Day. Hegseth, who was sworn in as the nation’s top defense official in January, oversees the Department of Defense and serves as the principal defense policy maker and advisor to the President. Prior to his service in the Trump administration, Hegseth was commissioned as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army National Guard after graduating from Princeton University in 2003. He participated in a number of active-duty deployments during his time in service, including operations in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan. Hegseth also served in multiple staff positions in the National Guard and has authored several books.

INDIANAPOLIS — Roger Penske attempted to close the latest cheating scandal engulfing his race team — this one at his beloved Indianapolis 500 — by firing his top three executives at Team Penske after two of the Penske cars were found to be illegal.
Penske fired team president Tim Cindric, IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer on Wednesday in the wake of this Indianapolis 500 cheating scandal.
“Nothing is more important than the integrity of our sport and our race teams,” Penske said in a statement. “We have had organizational failures during the last two years, and we had to make necessary changes. I apologize to our fans, our partners and our organization for letting them down.”
Penske is owner of the three-car team, IndyCar, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500. He has won the Indy 500 a record 20 times.
The firings and Penske’s statement have been his first public reaction since two-time defending Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden and teammate Will Power were found to have an illegally modified spec part on their cars ahead of Sunday’s final round of qualifications for the 109th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
Penske after the firings were announced held a team owner’s meeting remotely in which he took responsibility for his team’s actions. Some who dialed-in told The Associated Press the meeting lasted 20 minutes and the owners were satisfied with the outcome; no owners called for the Penske cars to be kicked out of the race, and the only questions asked were about how IndyCar moves on from the scandal ahead of the biggest race in the world.
“What he did in firing three people is a big deal,” Arrow McLaren team principal Tony Kanaan told The Associated Press. “I think everyone recognized how big of a deal this is to Roger and now it’s just a question of how to move on and how to make sure tech doesn’t miss these things again.”
Neither Newgarden or Power were allowed to qualify Sunday when rivals pointed out the illegal modification. Both drivers on Monday were dropped to the back of the field and will start 32nd and 33rd. Rival teams have been arguing it was not enough since it’s the second cheating scandal in two seasons and potentially illegal cars bumped Jacob Abel of Dale Coyne Racing from the field.
Newgarden is attempting to become the first driver in history to win three consecutive Indy 500s; no driver has ever won starting from the last row.
Cindric and Ruzewski had already been suspended by IndyCar for the race and both teams fined $100,000. It is the second consecutive year Cindric and Ruzewski were suspended from the Indy 500.
Rivals have been calling on Penske to address the situation since Sunday while questioning if IndyCar and the Indy 500 can continue to operate without an independent governing body absent of any Penske employees.
The trouble for Team Penske began before the fast 12 shootout on Sunday, when rival team owner Chip Ganassi was among a chorus of competitors who accused it of cheating. They noticed unapproved changes had been made to the rear attenuator, a safety device designed to absorb and reduce the force of impacts, and the assumption was the modifications would have given the two Team Penske cars an aerodynamic advantage in their four-lap qualifying runs.
Further investigation showed Newgarden’s winning car from last year that is displayed in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum has the same illegal modification, as did the car Team Penske brought to the White House last month. Rivals claim to have photos indicating the modification has been in place for some time.
Helio Castroneves, who won three Indy 500s driving for Team Penske, was among the few who doubted the team was cheating and believed Cindric’s explanation that the illegal modification was for aesthetic purposes only. Penske, after all, requires everything he owns to be pristine and with as clean lines and looks as possible.
“I believe they did something to look good. I don’t think that little (adjusted) lip is going to make them three miles an hour faster,” Castroneves said. “I know how Roger operates. He wants to make everything beautiful, perfect, shiny. I believe it was, again, a mistake, touching an area they’re not supposed to. In the rule book, they’re not supposed to touch. I believe what the series is doing is right. But they don’t need anything like that to go fast. I don’t see this as a situation that people are cheating. In terms of performance, I don’t think it would have changed anything.”
Colton Herta of Andretti Global also did not believe this latest scandal was as damaging as last year’s Team Penske fiasco.
“Do I think they had it for qualifying Saturday? Absolutely for sure. Do I think that’s why they were fast? Absolutely not,” Herta said. “I’d imagine that would equate to the smallest margins of drag. It is still disappointing to see the team get caught up in something again, but sorry, this is way different than 50 extra horsepower and I won’t be passed because of what they did.”
Herta is referring to last year’s Penske scandal when the team was caught in a push-to-pass manipulation in which Newgarden was found to have access to an additional boost of horsepower when he should not have while winning the season-opener. He was stripped of his win and Penske suspended Cindric for two races, including the Indy 500.
Cindric is the biggest name to fall in this scandal. He’s a member of the Team Penske Hall of Fame and has been with the organization since 2000 as President of Penske Racing Inc. He’s been long assumed to be Penske’s successor on the racing part of Penske’s empire.
Cindric was elevated to the role of President of Penske Performance in 2005 and, until February, essentially ran the day-to-day operations of all of Penske’s racing properties.
But Penske’s right-hand man in February was stripped of most of his roles although he said he chose to step back as the overall leader of the organization. He remained president of the IndyCar program.
Cindric is the father of NASCAR driver Austin Cindric.

Redwood Acres Racing returned on Saturday with the Legends, Late Models, Modifieds and Bombers all in action in Eureka. The action in the Legends race was particularly exciting with Brandon White of Eureka securing the win.
White came out on top of the 28-driver field, with White winning his heat to advance into the 18-car feature race. Ukiah’s Cole Brown took the initial lead in the feature race, but White was able to move up to third place by lap five of the race.
Ukiah’s Kai Lovell and White both began to close the gap on Brown, with White moving ahead of Lovell and eventually Brown once the handling on Brown’s car began to give him issues. White held onto his lead through the lone caution flag restart. Lovell kept things interesting, staying on White’s hips, but was never able to surpass him, with White securing the season-opening win at Redwood Acres. Sebastapol’s Cody Winchel took third place and Rocklin’s Robby Czub also passed Brown and took fourth place as Brown fell to sixth with Pasco, Washington’s Ellie Musgrave just holding off Brown for fifth place.
Fortuna’s Brandon Barnwell got the victory in the Late Models feature race, holding off Luke Hall and Blocksburg’s Jerry Peterson, who rounded out the top three on Saturday in the 65-lap main event.
Much like Brown, the handling on Hall’s car began to give him issues and allowed Barnwell back into the race. A fire on Louie Shaha’s car brought out a red flag but Hall was able to retain his lead ahead of Barnwell on the restart. Luckily, Shaha was able to resume in the race, eventually finishing in fifth place. Barnwell was able to overtake Hall in the final 10 laps and while Hall kept it close to pick up the second-place finish, he was never able to regain first place.
Charlie Collins of Upper Lake won the feature race for the Limited Modifieds, getting the win over his son Landyn Collins, who finished right behind him at second place with Luke Hall snagging a third-place finish ahead of Kristian Sanchez and Gene O’Dell, both of whom raced out of Kelseyville.
Dustin Walters of Fortuna won the Bombers feature, with TJ and Jimmy Sorrels of Ukiah, who took second and third place in the race.
Races will return to Redwood Acres next month on June 14 for the Craig Merrone Memorial, with races starting at 5 p.m.
