A quieter side of a F1’s fiercest competitor: Michael Schumacher

Former Formula 1 driver and TV commentator Marc Surer has offered a rare personal glimpse into Michael Schumacher’s off-track personality, recalling the seven-time World Champion’s capacity to celebrate, reflect deeply and hold on to moments long after they passed.

Surer shared memories of Schumacher in relaxed post-race moments that contrasted with his famously ruthless on-track image. The Swiss motorsport veteran: “I remember him after races drinking, smoking cigars and enjoying the win. But only for a short time.

“The next day, he was the serious Michael again. He could definitely celebrate. I remember one time in Monza, he was sitting on the roof of Bernie Ecclestone’s motorhome smoking a cigar. That was a classic.”

Despite his fierce reputation in competition, Surer described Schumacher as more emotionally attuned than many realised: “On the track, Schumacher was ruthless. But off-track, he was more sensitive than people think.

“I remember once in the DTM days, before he got to F1, he crashed with one of our drivers. I went up to him before the next race and said, ‘I’m watching you. Don’t do that again.’ He didn’t say a word then, but years later, he brought it up. ‘Did you really think I did it on purpose?’ He hadn’t forgotten.

“He was thoughtful, more so than his public image suggested,” revealed Surer

Surer: Ralf once asked me what “sh!t” I was saying on air

Surer also recalled his interactions with Michael’s younger brother Ralf Schumacher, particularly after he transitioned into broadcasting: “Ralf was always ‘Michael’s little brother’. He got into F1 partly because of Michael. He did well, but only when he had a great car, like the Williams at that time.

“I remember him confronting me once after a race, saying, ‘what sh!t are you talking about in your commentary?’ Now he’s a commentator himself, and I always tell him, ‘See? It’s not so easy!’

“But I have to say, he’s doing a good job. He’s not afraid to give a strong opinion, which is important. Too many commentators are too wishy-washy.”

Reflecting on Corinna Schumacher, Michael’s wife, Surer acknowledged they are no longer in regular contact but share a long-standing connection through equestrian interests: “I’m not really in touch with Corinna Schumacher now. I used to see her when Mick was in F1, but not much anymore. We both love horses though. I have horses, she does too, so maybe we’ll reconnect through that.”

Surer’s reflections add another layer to the Schumacher legacy — one marked not just by trophies and titles, but by memory, personality and a quieter side of a fierce competitor. (Source: Spin Genie)

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — Juncos Hollinger Racing hopes one of their drivers will be in the Indianapolis 500 Victory Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Juncos Hollinger Racing’s motorsport legacy is built not only on track but also on a strong commitment to community and culture. Since 2015, it has been developing young talent and is now competing in the IndyCar series.

Ricardo Juncos, co-owner and president of Juncos Hollinger Racing, said, “I think the Latino community in Indianapolis is growing every year. It’s one of the most popular in the country, I have to say. I think there are about 300,000 Latinos in Indiana. As the only Latino team, our garage will be packed, and 80% will be Latino.”

Juncos immigrated to the United States in 2002 with only $400 in his pocket. While financial resources were scarce, his determination was unmatched. He set out to create a racing team capable of competing at the highest levels of U.S. motorsports.

“We started in the very low level of motor racing with go karts with kids 8 to 10 years old as a very small team. Twenty years later, here we are now with one of the best series in the world, the IndyCar series and the Indy 500.”

Juncos Hollinger Racing is based in Speedway, blocks from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The team employs around 70 people and fields two cars: the No. 76, driven by Indiana’s own Conor Daly, and the No. 77, driven by Sting Ray Rob.

The team touts itself as an active member of the Indiana community, promoting inclusivity and diversity within the sport. “Last year, we did a nice event at the shop, which was an open house with local businesses; they either brought food, merchandise, or whatever they do and opened the doors for people to enter the shop.”

Juncos Hollinger Racing sees itself as a symbol of determination, community and cultural celebration, reminding everyone that racing is not just about competition but unity and shared passion. “We just need to keep fighting, trusting ourselves, and pushing, and one day you get there, right? Never stop.”

Prime Video is taking its NASCAR coverage to a new level this week with an innovative partnership involving Amazon.

A key part of this new deal is a feature called Shop the Race, which will allow fans to easily buy merchandise while they are watching the race.

This weekend shall be a big moment for Prime Video, as it becomes the first streaming service to exclusively show a top-tier NASCAR race without it also being on regular TV at the same time.

The first race to be shown under this new setup will be the Coca-Cola 600, a very important NASCAR event that started in 1960 to compete with the IndyCar Indianapolis 500.

This race is the first of five that Prime Video will produce, with technical support from NBC Sports, another company that has the rights to show NASCAR races.

For its first season covering NASCAR, Prime Video is introducing several new things, including the Shop the Race feature, statistical analysis powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), and a theme song that mixes Eric Church and John Fogerty’s song Up Around the Bend.

Viewers can also expect to see commercials in a smaller window during green-flag racing, thanks to a collaboration with Prime Video’s advertising team, along with highlight packages made specifically for NASCAR fans by the platform’s product team.

The Shop the Race feature is part of a larger idea called Shop the Show, where viewers need to open the Amazon Shopping app and search for Shop the Show to use it.

According to Alex Strand, Senior Coordinating Producer at Prime Video, one of the big advantages of Prime Video is that it doesn’t have the same time limits as regular TV, which means they can have much longer post-race shows.

NASCAR are planning for the post-race coverage to last 45 minutes, but this could change depending on what happens in the race.

Prime Video is also trying out a new way to show commercials. During green-flag racing, they will show ads in a smaller window on the screen.

This means that advertisers can show their content while the race is still happening.

Full-screen ads will only be shown when there are yellow or red flags, which is a designed approach to make the viewing experience better for fans who don’t want to miss any action during commercial breaks.

In addition to these features, Prime Video will also introduce two new on-screen tools for NASCAR fans: Key Moments and Rapid Recap.

Key Moments will let viewers go back and watch important moments from earlier in the race, while Rapid Recap will give new viewers a quick two-minute summary of what has happened in the race so far.

While the specific details of the statistics that AWS will provide haven’t been revealed, it is expected to build on their work with Formula 1 broadcasts, focusing on things like car performance and race strategy.

Pinnacle to be featured at select NASCAR Cup Series races with Tyler Reddick and the No. 45 team

May 20, 2025

23XI Racing announced today that Pinnacle has expanded its relationship with the team in a multi-year partnership that makes Pinnacle the official banking sponsor of Tyler Reddick and the No. 45 team. The Nashville-based firm is a leading financial institution located in urban markets across the Southeast. Pinnacle has been an associate partner with Reddick and 23XI since 2023, but this partnership expansion marks the first time Pinnacle will have a featured, brand-focused design on the No. 45 Toyota Camry XSE.

The Pinnacle-branded paint scheme will first compete at Nashville Superspeedway in June and will return during the Playoffs for the Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway in September. Additionally, Pinnacle branding will be included on the No. 45 team’s equipment and will continue to be featured on Reddick’s driver uniform.

Pinnacle has long supported Reddick, partnering with him in NASCAR each season since 2018, when he won the first of his two consecutive Xfinity Series championships. While Reddick has raced a Pinnacle-branded car in the Xfinity Series, the Nashville race will mark the first time Pinnacle will be featured with a paint scheme in the Cup Series. In addition to the partnership with 23XI and Reddick, Pinnacle is the official bank of the Memphis Grizzlies, Tennessee Titans and The Pinnacle, a recently opened state-of-the-art premier live music venue located in the heart of Nashville Yards.

“Our team has enjoyed the partnership with Pinnacle since Tyler joined the team, and we’re excited to grow our relationship with Pinnacle to more prominently feature their brand on the No. 45 car,” said team president Steve Lauletta. “Much like 23XI, Pinnacle is driven to be impactful for their clients, their employees and their community, and we look forward to developing more programs and activations with them.”

“The group at Pinnacle has played such an important role in my career, and I’m honored to have the chance to represent them in a greater way through this partnership expansion,” said Tyler Reddick, driver of the No. 45 Toyota Camry XSE. “From supporting me earlier in my career to continuing to believe in me and what we’re doing at 23XI, I’m excited to represent all the associates at Pinnacle and look forward to having a great opening race with them in Nashville.”

“Pinnacle and 23XI are such a great match for each other because we both share a vision of being the best,” said Andy Moats, Pinnacle’s director of music, sports and entertainment. “The love for NASCAR and racing runs deep at our firm, and we’ve been with Tyler for a long time. Working alongside him as he’s grown into the racer he is today has been a privilege, and this partnership will bring us even closer to him, his team and the incredible community that surrounds this sport.”

About 23XI Racing

23XI Racing – pronounced twenty-three eleven – was founded by NBA legend Michael Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin in 2020. With rising NASCAR star Bubba Wallace selected to drive the No. 23 Toyota Camry, the team made its NASCAR Cup Series debut in the 2021 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Wallace made history on October 4, 2021, when he captured his first career Cup Series win, becoming just the second African American to win in the Cup Series, and earning 23XI its first-ever victory. 23XI expanded to a two-car organization in 2022 with Cup Series Champion Kurt Busch driving the No. 45 Toyota Camry. With a win at Kansas Speedway in May of 2022, Busch earned 23XI the team’s first-ever playoff berth. In 2024, Tyler Reddick won the Regular Season Championship and raced to a spot in the Championship 4, a first for both the team and Reddick. 23XI currently features the lineup of Bubba Wallace in the No. 23 Toyota Camry XSE, Tyler Reddick in the No. 45 Toyota Camry XSE, Riley Herbst in the No. 35 Toyota Camry XSE and Corey Heim as the team’s development driver. The team operates out of Airspeed, a state-of-the-art facility in Huntersville, N.C. that opened in January of 2024.

CHARLOTTE — Former Cup champion Kurt Busch headlines the 2026 NASCAR Hall of Fame class that was selected Tuesday.

Busch and Harry Gant were selected on the Modern Era ballot. Modified racer Ray Hendrick was selected on the Pioneer Era ballot. Track promoter Humpy Wheeler was selected as the Landmark Award winner.

Busch and Gant each received 61% of the votes on the Moderan Era ballot. Jeff Burton finished third, followed by Harry Hyde and Randy Dorton.

“Everyone that’s on the ballot is someone that can go into the Hall because of the impact that they made on the sport,” said Busch, who attended Tuesday’s announcement with family members. “And for me, just a blue-collar kid out of Vegas, I never would have imagined this. We were a family where it was just a hobby, It was like a hobby to race, it was just fun to go to the track as father-son. Dad had his car and he helped me build mine.”

Hendrick received 31% of the votes on the Pioneer Era Ballot. Bob Welborn finished second.

There were 49 ballots. Forty-eight voters and the NASCAR.com fan vote. Reigning Cup champion Joey Logano was among the voters.

The NASCAR.com fan vote had Ray Hendrick from the Pioneer Era and Kurt Busch and Harry Gant from the Modern Era.

Busch, Gant and Hendrick — who will be inducted Jan. 23, 2026 — will join 67 others in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and represent the Hall’s 16th class.

The mercurial Busch was known as much for his success as his temper. He competed in Cup from 2000-22. Busch won at least one race 10 consecutive years. He had a streak of nine consecutive seasons with at least a victory when he was forced out of the car due to a concussion he suffered in a crash at Pocono in July 2022.

Busch scored 34 career victories, including the 2010 Coca-Cola 600 and 2017 Daytona 500. He was selected as one of NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers.

He had memorable run-ins with Jimmy Spencer, NASCAR officials and media during his career, adding to his reputation as a fiery competitor.

“I think (NASCAR executive) Jim Hunter, the late Jim Hunter, said it best to me once when I was in some trouble and he said, ‘Son, you can get as much trouble as you want because you have that much talent to dig yourself out of these holes you keep putting yourself in, but wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t dig those holes and you could just stay on top riding with your talent?’”

This was the first year on the ballot for the 46-year-old Busch.

This was the sixth year on the ballot for the 85-year old Gant. He won 18 races, including two Southern 500s and was known as “Mr. September” for winning four consecutive Cup races in 1991. He was named as one of NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers.

Gant finished third in balloting for the Class of 2025, a class that had Ricky Rudd and Carl Edwards.

Hendrick, who died in 1990 at the age of 71, won more than 700 races in the modified and Late Model Sportsman divisions. He was named on of NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers and has a record 20 Martinsville wins. This was his second year on the ballot.
