On the cusp of a brand new season on the volleyball court, the Abilene Reporter-News is breaking down the Big Country’s best players and squads heading into the start of the 2025 campaign.
Today, we’re analyzing the Abilene area’s top teams and unveiling the ARN’s 2025 Preseason Big Country Volleyball Rankings in anticipation of matches beginning statewide on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11-12.
We sought to identify the Big Country’s top 10 teams heading into the 2025 Texas high school volleyball season and provide a deep dive on their outlook for the upcoming season.
The ARN’s Big Country High School Volleyball rankings will be updated routinely throughout the regular season.
Here’s a closer look at the Abilene Reporter-News’ 2025 Big Country Volleyball Preseason Rankings:
No. 10 Abilene Cooper
Last season: 10-18 overall (2-3 in District 4-5A); Reached bi-district round of 5A DI UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: MB/OH Peyton Ellis, Jr.; OH Baeleigh Stark, Sr.
Cooper narrowly squeaked into the 5A DI playoffs last year after snagging District 4-5A’s final postseason berth during the last week of the regular season in 2024.
Ellis and Stark are the only returning varsity lettermen for the Cougars, who will have to find their groove quickly with a new set of teammates to make a return trip to the bi-district round of the playoffs in 2025.
No. 9 Benjamin
Last season: 32-9 overall (6-0 in District 8-1A); reached regional semifinals of Class 1A UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: L Gabby Hilario, Sr.; S Abbey Abila, Sr.; MB Avery Abila, Sr.
The Mustangs should provide the staunchest local competition for Bronte during their hunt for the Class 1A UIL Volleyball State Championship.
Benjamin returns starters at every position on the floor following a run to the third round of the 1A playoffs last year, and should be considered a favorite to repeat as District 8-1A champions.
No. 8 Clyde
Last season: 20-20 overall (10-2 in District 6-3A); reached bi-district round of 3A DII UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: OH Kennadie Freeman, Sr.; L Gracie Caperton, Sr.; OH Aubrey Jones, Jr.
The Lady Bulldogs shook off a sluggish start to their 2024 campaign by closing out strong in District 6-3A play, but struggled once they reached the 3A DII UIL playoffs.
With Freeman and Jones both back to form one of the Abilene area’s strongest outside hitter combos, expect Clyde to punch above their weight class and become one of the Big Country’s most explosive teams offensively.
No. 7 Hawley
Last season: 30-11 overall (8-0 in District 6-2A); reached area round of 2A DI UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: UTL Lilly Bailey, Sr.; OH Ryland Trojcak, Jr.; S Walker Gilman, Jr.
The Lady Bearcats were far and away the Big Country’s top team in Class 2A last year after going unbeaten in district play on their way to a 30-11 record, a District 6-2A title and an area round playoff appearance.
With 2024 TGCA All-State selection Bailey back as a senior leader, Hawley has what it takes to break through and make a deep postseason run in 2025.
No. 6 Jim Ned
Last season: 25-12 overall (8-4 in District 6-3A); reached bi-district round of 3A DI UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: L Baylee Shriver, Sr.; OH Jessa Garcia, Sr.; OH Natalie Reid, Sr.; S Maddie King, Sr.
Jim Ned could be poised for a banner year in 2025 with virtually all seniors filling their starting lineup.
Jim Ned boasts one of the Abilene area’s most experienced squads entering the Texas high school volleyball season, but the Lady Indians’ senior class will need to set the tone during a difficult stretch of district play in District 6-3A.
No. 5 Bronte
Last season: 31-12 overall (8-0 in District 6-1A); reached state semifinals of Class 1A UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: MB Treyton McCullough, Sr.; MB Hailey Beal, Sr.; S/DS Maddie Schoenfield, Sr.
Of all the Big Country’s high school volleyball teams, Bronte enters the 2025 season with the best claim as a serious UIL state championship contender.
The senior trio of Schoenfield at setter, plus Beal and McCullough at middle blocker, makes the Longhorns one of the Lone Star State’s most elite defensive teams in Class 1A.
No. 4 Abilene High
Last season: 12-27 overall (4-5 in District 4-5A); reached bi-district round of 5A DI UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: MB Olivia Weatherford, Sr.; UTL Allie Bennett, Sr.; S/DS Kate Breckenridge, Jr.
The Eagles punched their ticket to the bi-district round of the 5A DI playoffs last year after an up-and-down season in District 4-5A.
Abilene High will have the most returning production of all the Abilene and Wichita Falls area squads in District 4-5A, setting the table nicely for a deep senior class led by Bennett and Weatherford.
No. 3 Snyder
Last season: 20-17 overall (6-4 in District 5-4A); reached bi-district round of 4A DII UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: MB Jessica Crawford, Sr.; S Sydnee Gomez, Jr.; L/DS Lea Aviles, Jr.
The Lady Tigers might be one of the most slept on teams throughout the Big Country and West Texas after a strong 2024 campaign in which they held their own in a hyper competitive District 5-4A.
If Gomez, Aviles and Snyder’s young up-and-coming defensive specialists can continue to elevate their game this year, then the Lady Tigers could become a dark horse contender to reach the 4A DII regional finals.
No. 2 Stephenville
Last season: 23-16 overall (6-4 in District 6-4A); reached regional semifinals of 4A DI UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: S Stevie-Kate LaDuque, Sr.; OH Allegra Foreman, Sr.; MB/OH Adelaide Hershman, Jr.
Few Big Country volleyball teams will have as high of a ceiling as the Honeybees heading into 2025.
Despite graduating many of the area’s most talented seniors from last year’s squad, Stephenville will reload with star setter LaDuque and Adelaide — a 6-foot-4 middle blocker — to anchor one of the state’s toughest defenses in Class 4A.
No. 1 Abilene Wylie
Last season: 22-16 overall (6-1 in District 4-5A); reached regional semifinals of 5A DII UIL Volleyball Playoffs
Players to Watch: OH Haddie Mock, Jr.; OH Kiki Bolden, So.; S Kenley Collier, Jr.
The Bulldogs reversed course after a tough start to their 2024 campaign, as Wylie finished the year as the Abilene area’s hottest team and reached the regional semifinals at the 5A level for the first time in school history.
Several underclassmen — like the outside hitter tandem of Bolden and Mock — enjoyed breakout seasons last year. They will provide the Bulldogs with lots of depth as they pursue their second straight District 4-5A championship.
Also Considered: Abilene Christian; Miles; Brownwood; Coahoma; Sweetwater; Albany; Breckenridge; Early; Eastland; Ballinger.
