History

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State women’s basketball team (6-3) went head to head against the New Mexico Lobos (5-5) for the second time this weekend. The Aggies controlled the pace for most of the game as they walked off the court with another victory 68-60.

Molly Kaiser put on another outstanding shooting show as she dropped 30 points on the Lobos in today’s matchup after finishing with a team-high 25 in the first meeting between these two teams on Friday. On the day, Kaiser finished perfect from the charity stripe (9-for-9) and knocked down 10 field goal attempts to ultimately help the Aggies extend the game out of UNM’s reach.

Both Fanta Gassama and Madi Gewirtz played strong defensively as they each contributed with steals and boards of their own. Gassama would pick up 10 defensive rebounds, while Gewirtz took home four steals for the Aggies. In total, the Aggies also would record 13 steals today to mark their highest total of the last five outings.

The Aggies combined to shoot 80% at the line, which represents their third-highest free-throw percentage this season. They also held the Lobos to 21% from the arc, which was their opponents’ second-lowest shooting percentage from deep this season.

Defensively, Loes Rozing drew to task of defending the Lobo’s leading scorer, Viane Cumber. Rozing and the Aggies allowed Cumber to score just 11 pts and forced her into three turnovers. The Lobo’s other leading performer, Destinee Hooks, also struggled to take care of the ball amid the pressure as she recorded a season-high in turnovers as she finished with 10, including six in the second half. Though UNM was able to trim the lead right before the half, the Aggies were able to carry momentum the rest of the way as they battled to earn the win in the end.

UP NEXT

The Aggies will travel on a two-game mid-week road trip to face Tarleton in Stephenville, Texas, and No. 13 ranked Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., following that match up. The first road game will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. MST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
