Recap

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The New Mexico State Women’s Basketball team faced off today in the inaugural 1-25 rivalry game of the season. The Aggies managed to secure victory against the Lobos with a score of 81-71 after seizing control midway through the 2nd Quarter.

Four players for NM State showcased outstanding performances, including Molly Kaiser (25 pts), Loes Rozing (17 pts), Sylena Peterson (17 pts), and Madi Gewirtz (11). Kaiser and Rozing both shot 7-9 on field goals and hit 2-3 from beyond the arc. Five players concluded the game with a shooting percentage of 50% or higher.

Once again, Fanta Gassama excelled in the paint, tallying a total of 13 rebounds (1 offensive, 12 defensive). She finished just shy of a triple double, missing out on one point and one assist, which would have made her the first Aggie of the season to achieve that feat.

NM State intercepted 3 passes from the Lobos, concluding the game with 33 total rebounds. As a team, they achieved a shooting percentage of 50% or better from three-point range in the first three quarters. However, they struggled at the free-throw line, finishing at 62.5% compared to the Lobos’ 73.7%.

The Aggies started slowly, allowing the Lobos to gain an early lead in the first few minutes. Nevertheless, with some strategic defensive plays and consistent shooting, they managed to cut the deficit to just one point by the end of the first quarter. Taking advantage of the Lobos’ slump in the 2nd Quarter, they overtook the higher-scoring players from UNM. The 3rd and final quarters turned into a chase for the Lobos.

There were moments when UNM narrowed the gap as Vianè Cumber found her rhythm in the second half. Nevertheless, it ultimately proved insufficient for the Lobos as the Aggies maintained control in the closing minutes of the match.
