PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — From smoking to living in the South, many people face a higher risk of a pulmonary embolism: a blood clot in the lungs.
Now with technology, new drugs, and specialized care, a local team is working for better outcomes.
Last year, Stephany Brown fulfilled a lifelong dream – taking a cruise.
“It was part of our 20th wedding anniversary,” Stephany remembers with a smile.
But she also remembers last year for surviving a pulmonary embolism.
After being startled at work, her fitness tracker said her heart was in overdrive, and couldn’t slow down.
She was also getting short of breath.
“My mother was adamant – ‘You need to hurry up and go to the hospital,’ ” she recalls.
At Temple University Hospital, tests quickly found the cause.
“There were blood clots in both lungs, and they were extremely big,” she notes.
“A blood clot that starts in the leg, breaks off, comes to the lung – It can affect anyone. It spares no one,” explains Dr. Parth Rali, a Temple Health thoracic surgeon.
Dr. Rali says P-E’s can come without warning, block blood flow and cause heart or lung damage.
A third of people with them die before getting a diagnosis and treatment.
To find lung clots faster, Dr. Rali’s team uses A-I software to read CT scans.
“If it detects the blood clot, it will put it at the top of the queue for the radiologist,” he explains.
“Instead of waiting for 5, 6 hours, you are getting reads in like 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes,” he says.
The P-E response team gets an alert, so they can start blood thinners faster and plan other treatments – such as a catheter that puts drugs right into the clot.
“I get it right on my phone. I don’t need to look for a computer,” he adds.
Dr. Rali is also testing A-I guided ultrasound even non-technicians can use.
“It will self-prompt you, saying go here, go here, go – next steps,” he says, adding, “How fast you act changes your trajectory, meaning that how well you’re going to do.”
Stephany took part in trials of a new clot-busting drug.
Because the clots shrank so fast, she thinks she got the drug, not a placebo.
Now, her family is back making plans.
“We’re gonna cruise in December again. I think we’re addicted to it now,” she says with a laugh.
She’s also back on her weight loss journey, losing 95 pounds so far.
Dr. Rali says long-term follow-ups with both specialists and primary care is essential to preventing future clots.

Amazon’s latest acquisition is a $50 Fitbit-style device that never stops listening

What just happened? Amazon has announced that it will acquire Bee, a San Francisco-based startup known for its wearable AI device. The planned purchase signals the tech giant’s renewed ambitions in what has become a crowded market for smart personal assistants.
Founded in 2022, Bee gained attention for its $50 wristband, designed not just as a fitness tracker, but also as a personal digital assistant. Unlike traditional wearables, Bee’s bracelet captures and transcribes conversations around the wearer in real-time.
Using a combination of in-house and third-party AI models, the device distills discussions, reminders, and tasks into summaries available through a companion app. It operates quietly on a single charge for days and can create a searchable log of daily life, synthesizing information from communications, calendar events, and even photos if the user gives permission.
The acquisition comes at a time when major tech firms are racing to invent the next breakthrough in AI-driven consumer technology. OpenAI’s recent $6.5 billion acquisition of io, another wearable AI startup, underscores the growing conviction that AI will soon transition from desktops and phones to become an integral part of the body itself.
In her announcement, Bee’s CEO Maria de Lourdes Zollo described the vision of “truly personal” AI – technology that learns from the user and supports everyday life in a seamless way.
For Amazon, the deal represents a return to a product space it recently exited. In 2023, the company discontinued Halo, its health-tracking wearable, amid intensifying competition and a broader refocus on its most promising hardware projects.
Amazon officials have not disclosed the amount the company will pay for the startup, nor when the deal is expected to close. They have confirmed, however, that all Bee employees have received job offers as part of the acquisition.
Both companies emphasize that users retain control over their data: the device can be muted at any time and does not store audio by default. Privacy, a long-standing concern in the field of voice technology, has been positioned as a top priority, with Amazon promising to uphold Bee’s privacy standards and add new features to give users “even greater control” over their experience.
With the recent relaunch of Alexa’s AI capabilities, industry observers expect Amazon could one day integrate Bee’s technology into the broader Alexa ecosystem. While similar attempts by other startups have met with mixed results, Amazon and Bee are betting that the promise of a truly proactive, personalized AI – one that remembers, reminds, and assists without constant input – will appeal to users seeking a smarter digital companion.

Your iPhone, Apple Watch, and other Apple-owned devices are getting a big overhaul very soon. The best part? You won’t have to pay a dime for them — all you have to do is update your software.
Several new features are coming to WatchOS 26, and the seed 4 beta software is now available for developers, with a public beta rollout likely coming soon. Reddit users in the r/Apple Watch subreddit are already getting into the latest update and providing commentary on their most and least favorite features. The features touch everything from Fitness to Messages, and include a major design update across Apple’s platforms for a more unified look and naming mechanisms that reflect the year the software debuts.

In addition to WatchOS updates, Apple also introduced AI feature developments, like Live Translation and on-screen Visual Intelligence, like Hold Assist for phone calls and Polls for Messages, and more.
For those interested in trying out the beta software, WatchOS 26 is supported on the latest Apple Watches. Owners of these devices can download the OS, though it may have some bugs.
Here are the features we’re most excited to try out on WatchOS 26 once the public beta goes live.
1. Liquid Glass design update
Your Apple Watch interface, along with the rest of your Apple devices, is getting the Liquid Glass design treatment. Apple’s “broadest design update ever” introduces a fluid and clear across-platform display overhaul inspired by VisionOS’s visual interface.
Liquid Glass can reflect or refract whatever is behind or in front of it to create a transparent, glassy look.
PCMag: I visited a secret brain implant company and got a glimpse of our cyborg future
This will change how your Smart Stack, notifications, icons, and more appear. Icons on your watch’s lock screen or app page will look clear instead of their current opaque appearance, reflecting the light on your wallpaper or on apps.
2. Apple Intelligence-infused Fitness
The next time you record a workout on the Fitness app, you’ll have a personal fitness coach waiting for you. AI-powered Workout Buddy uses your fitness data history it has gathered through the app, to provide you with real-time insights during your workout.
Workout Buddy rapidly considers your fitness history, paces, Activity Rings, Training Load, and more to deliver feedback and encouragement ahead of, during, and after your exercise. It is available in English for these workout types: Outdoor and Indoor Run, Outdoor and Indoor Walk, Outdoor Cycle, HIIT, and Functional and Traditional Strength Training.
It’s about time Apple debuts an AI health feature that incorporates personalized data insights. Other wearables, like Oura and Whoop, have health coaches or advisors that create reports or customize activity recommendations based on a user’s activity levels and behaviors. I’m excited to test out this feature and see how it compares to the competition.
Also: I switched to the Apple Watch after a four-year hiatus – here’s why it’s near perfect now
Workouts are also getting a facelift with more customizable workout and race route features. The Workout app has four new buttons for further customization, including Goals, Custom, Pacer, and Race Route. Apple Watch users can additionally select playlists or podcasts they regularly listen to during workouts within the Workout app.
3. Smart Stack improvements
Smart Stack’s prediction algorithm is improving. The algorithm now includes more contextual data, like sensor and routine data, to hint at certain apps or functionalities. For example, a hint for the Functional Strength Training workout might pop up once you enter your gym in the morning, or the Backtrack hint might pop up once Apple Watch registers you’re in a location with no cellular connectivity.
4. Notifications
Apple Watch Notifications are getting, thankfully, self-aware. Instead of loudly pinging you in silent environments — something that constantly happens to me in my quiet office — the new feature interprets the ambient noise of your environment to adjust your notification volume while delivering a text or app update.
5. Live Translation
Apple Intelligence brings Live Translation to Messages in Apple Watch. The AI-powered feature translates conversations to a user’s preferred language on their wrist.
Also: I was on the fence with the Apple Watch 10, but these 3 features changed my mind
The feature is available on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2, and it currently supports English (US, UK), French (France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain), and Chinese (simplified).
6. Messages
Apple Watch will use the context clues from your Messages to suggest relevant actions, like sending a Check-In when a user is on their way home or an Apple Cash pop-up when a friend sends you the dinner bill. Apple also says that Smart Replies are getting even smarter with its on-device language model, which provides “precise” and “relevant” responses to conversations.
7. Wrist Flick
Move over Double Tap. A new hand motion just dropped for the Apple Watch. Wrist Flick is designed for dismissing notifications and calls, or silence pings. All a user has to do is turn their wrist.
8. More updates across the board
The Notes app arrives on Apple Watch. As does Hold Assist and Call Screening, two new iOS feature that notify user to return to a call on a phone call hold and screen unknown numbers. Live Listen, an accessibility feature for those deaf or hard of hearing, provides live captions on your iPhone using audio that Apple Watch monitors.
Also: Every iPhone model you can update to iOS 26 (and which ones don’t support it)
The Watch acts as a remote control to start or pause these conversations. Lastly, watch faces will be easier to customize with a redesigned watch face gallery, and photo faces use custom content to shuffle images on your watch screen.
Which Apple Watch models support WatchOS 26?
You’ll need an iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE in addition to following Apple Watches. Keep in mind that some Apple Intelligence-powered features, like Live Translation and Workout Buddy, require one of the following iPhone models: all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Max with Apple Intelligence enabled.
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Ultra
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)

You’ve probably heard of the upstart tech brand Nothing by now, but if you haven’t, here’s a quick TLDR: The UK-based tech startup aims to make products like cellphones and headphones that incorporate innovative features and designs that are an incredible value for the money. The company just released their new smartwatch this month, the CMF Watch 3 Pro, and it’s already discounted by 20%. Originally $99, you can now grab one for $79, unsurprisingly the lowest price since the recent release.
The CMF Watch 3 Pro is designed for “everyday users and casual fitness explorers” and just given the price, its already a strong contender for best budget smartwatch/fitness tracker of 2025. The most impressive aspect of this watch is its direct ChatGPT integration: You can use voice prompts to ask the chatbot questions or set reminders, among other things. One neat feature is its ability to record voices and auto-transcribe conversations or notes (great for work meetings or class). How well it works, though, remains a bit of an open question, as it has yet to be widely reviewed.
If you’ve used the CMF Watch 2 Pro, you’ll already be familiar with the design, which hasn’t changed much. It’s still got a round display with a rotating crown on the top right, thought the display is a bit bigger—1.43 inches compared to the Watch 2 Pro’s 1.32 inches. Nothing kept the auto brightness adjustment, which is determined by the built-in sensor and makes it very practical to walk outdoors from a dimmer indoor setting and vice versa. They also kept the dual-band GPS support with access to five satellite systems, providing greater accuracy when tracking your outdoor activities.
What do you think so far?
The real upgrades come mainly from the software. The Watch 3 Pro has over 130 sport modes, compared to 120 on the older model. The battery now lasts 13 days with a single charge, which is two days longer than before. It’s certainly in the running for the best sub-$100 smartwatch you can buy right now.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is now at its lowest price on Amazon, with GPS-only models starting at $299 and the 46mm GPS + Cell model at $410. The 46mm Apple Watch Series 10 GPS + Cell in Jet Black with Ink Sport Loop is at $119 off, matching the Prime Day all-time low.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is currently experiencing its lowest prices on Amazon, presenting a notable opportunity for consumers seeking to acquire the latest wearable technology at discounted rates. According to recent reports, the standard GPS-only models are now priced at $299 for the 42mm version and $329 for the 46mm variant, representing a significant reduction from their original prices [1].
The 46mm Apple Watch Series 10 GPS + Cell model, which includes cellular connectivity, is currently priced at $410. This configuration is particularly notable as it is the only model currently available at the Prime Day all-time low price of $119 off, making it an attractive option for those seeking advanced features [1].
These discounts are part of a broader trend in the tech industry, where manufacturers often offer significant price reductions during major sales events such as Prime Day. This strategy is designed to clear inventory and stimulate demand, particularly as the new product cycle approaches [1].
The Apple Watch Series 10, which was launched with advanced health and fitness features, continues to be a popular choice among consumers. Its ability to monitor heart rate, detect irregular rhythms, and track sleep patterns makes it a valuable tool for health-conscious individuals [2].
For those interested in cellular connectivity, the Apple Watch Series 10 offers the option to send texts, make calls, and stream music without needing an iPhone nearby. This feature is particularly useful for individuals who prioritize convenience and connectivity [2].
The current discounts on the Apple Watch Series 10 are likely to attract a wide range of consumers, from those seeking a basic fitness tracker to those who require advanced health monitoring and connectivity features. As the new product cycle approaches, it is expected that prices may fluctuate, potentially offering even more significant savings in the coming months [1].
