Eastern faced a setback as one of their top returning players decided to enter the transfer portal on Friday afternoon.
Redshirt sophomore running back MJ Flowers posted on his Instagram profile that he intends to enter the portal on Dec. 9.
“I want to express all my glory and gratitude to my lord and savior Jesus Christ,” Flowers’ message stated. “My initial three years at EIU have been an incredible journey. I’m grateful to my family, friends, coach Wilkerson, coach Pugh, and the whole coaching staff for allowing me to compete at this level. Thank you EIU for making my aspiration of playing Division 1 college football a reality. EIU has provided me with lifelong friendships and memories that I will hold dear. That being said, I have opted to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility left.”
Flowers, hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, recorded seven rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns this year. He also notched 865 rushing yards during the 2024 season, with his longest run being 65 yards.
Having played in all 12 games, Flowers was honored as part of the Big South-Ohio Valley All-Conference First-Team at the season’s end.
Last year, he received the title of 2023 Big South-OVC football offensive freshman of the year, was the runner-up for the Jerry Rice FCS Freshman of the Year Award, and earned First Team Freshman All-American accolades from Stats Perform, Phil Steele, and Football Central/SI.
The NCAA transfer portal opens on Dec. 9 and will remain open until Dec. 28.
