SEATTLE, Wash. – Sun Devil freshman attacker Itziar Almeda was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week, the first weekly conference honors of the season for the Sun Devils. The young attacker adds a dynamic point scoring component to the Sun Devil offense. Almeda posted an 11-point weekend at the Rainbow Invitational, which included eight goals and three assists. She notched two plus goals in every game and scored three of the seven goals versus No. 5 Hawaii.She also earned three goals to go along with four assists in an assertive 19-6 win over California Lutheran University to kick off the season. She currently leads the team in assists and points and is second in goals scored this far into the season. Arizona State looks to build off the young attackers versatile play and continue to apply pressure to their opponents at the Triton Invitational this Friday, Jan. 31 – Feb. 2. The first match for the Sun Devils is at 5 p.m. MST on Jan. 31.
The week prior was the season opener for the Sun Devils who went 4-0 in their first four games played in the ASU Invitational. She was an instrumental part of their undefeated stretch tallying nine goals scored and eleven assists over the two day tournament. Her performance lifted the Sun Devils to win by an average of six points per game and secured a sweep on the weekend against two ranked opponents, then No. 23 SDSU and then No. 15 UC Davis.
