LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A varsity boys basketball match between Lincoln East and Lincoln Southwest High Schools was halted on Thursday evening due to rising tensions among the student sections that created an unsafe situation, as reported by officials from Lincoln Public Schools.
This event took place during the game at Lincoln East, where students from both schools were allegedly hurling objects and making inappropriate remarks. The match was temporarily stopped as school administrators and Lincoln Police worked to evacuate student attendees from both sides of the gym.
After the students were cleared, the game continued without any additional interruptions.
LPS Director of Athletics and Activities Dr. JJ Toczek communicated with students and families in a letter on Thursday night, stressing the necessity of adhering to behavioral standards to sustain a safe and respectful environment at school events.
“To clarify, this sort of reckless and unsportsmanlike conduct will not be accepted at any Lincoln Public Schools event—or any competition involving LPS students,” Toczek stated.
School officials refrained from discussing any potential disciplinary measures but reiterated that not adhering to behavior expectations could result in consequences.
