Amazon Prime Video’s AI NASCAR Graphic Explained

Amazon Prime Video’s newest NASCAR stat incorporates tens of thousands of incoming data points in real time, using machine learning over the course of a race for more accurate outputs. But when “The Burn Bar” pops up on screen, senior coordinating producer Alex Strand doesn’t want viewers to spend time thinking about the math involved. Instead, the miles-per-gallon readout, along with a color-coded guide, is meant to instantly convey the story of a driver conserving fuel or maxing out.
“That’s ultimately our North Star at Amazon,” Strand said. “How do we bring more data to viewers, but do it in a way that they can digest?”
The graphic package was 18 months in the making, stretching back to Strand’s first meetings with analysts Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Steve Letarte, as they watched a race and discussed what Amazon could add to the picture when it began streaming races this year.
“We actually think fuel is a really, really cool part of racing,” Strand said. “It’s just no one’s really figured out how to tell that story yet.”
Letarte added that fuel strategy would be a particularly relevant talking point during Amazon’s stretch of races this spring, including Sunday’s showdown at Michigan International Speedway.
Back in 2008, for instance, Earnhardt Jr. cut off his engine during a late caution at MIS, coasting to save every ounce of gas and outlasting his competition for the checkered flag.
It’s exactly the kind of maneuver—nearly invisible to the untrained eye—that Prime Video’s booth hopes to spotlight, similar to the company’s work on pre-snap cat-and-mouse games during Thursday Night Football broadcasts.
“This is awful because I’m an announcer, but I think the more a sport can be displayed, both visually by the director and graphically by the great graphics director and producer—that’s my goal,” Letarte said.
Amazon says it has developed a proprietary artificial intelligence model to track fuel mileage for every car on a lap-by-lap basis, primarily based on throttle and RPM measurements, while race teams are likely only viewing similar data for select vehicles. Amazon data scientists, computer vision experts, engineers and producers—including Prime Video producer for analytics and insights Sam Schwartzstein, a former football player who helps lead Thursday Night Football’s Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats efforts—contributed to the development process, which also relies on Amazon Web Services’ cloud computing power.
So far, the Burn Bar has largely been broken out for specific drivers in key moments, though it could also be used to compare a car’s race to previous events, or even more significantly, to the rest of the field.
“That’s really where the story unfolds as the race unfolds,” Letarte said.
Viewers are now getting to see it for themselves.

GTWCA expands to three-hour races; 2026 calendar set

GT World Challenge America Powered by AWS will expand its standard format to a single three-hour race in 2026 from its current doubleheader 90-minute races each weekend. Announced ahead of the CrowdStrike24 Hours of Spa weekend by Stéphane Ratel, CEO of SRO Motorsports Group, the change marks the latest evolution in the format for GTWCA events.
The change brings GT World Challenge America into alignment with global endurance traditions while maintaining a tie to the series’ sprint-race roots. The new format will mean a minimum of two pit stops per race, opening up strategies for tires and driver stint options.
Also announced at Spa, which included previews of SRO Motorsports Group’s worldwide series, was a provisional calendar for 2026 that includes seven rounds. Five of the tracks are featured on this year’s schedule, book-ended by Sonoma Raceway in March and the Indianapolis 8 Hour at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October, also a part of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. Other venues for 2026 include Circuit of The Americas, Sebring International Raceway, and Barber Motorsports Park. Two TBAs are included on the calendar, in the places currently occupied by VIRginia International Raceway and Road America.
The schedules for the other SRO Motorsports Group properties on the American docket will share the same calendar.
GT4 America retains its two 60-minute races each weekend format, aside from the three-hour Lone Star Enduro at COTA.
The calendar for GT America – the sprint series featuring current and out-of homologation GT3 and GT4 cars – mirrors the others with one-offs such as its appearance at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach apparently off the schedule.
GT America will welcome Cup cars into the fold for the 2026 season, re-introducing race-prepped Porsche GT3 Cup, Lamborghini Super Trofeo and Ferrari Challenge machines into the SRO America paddock. This addition creates a new home for one-make series racers seeking competitive, professionally managed sprint racing within a multi-class environment.
TC America powered by Skip Barber Racing School also will be present on all the SRO America weekends. Featuring factory-built racers from Hyundai, Toyota, Acura, BMW and Mazda, the series shifts to two 35-minute races a weekend from its current three-race format.
Provisional 2026 GT World Challenge America Powered by AWS calendar
Sonoma Raceway, March 27-29
Circuit of The Americas, April 24-26
Sebring International Raceway, May 15-17
TBA, June 12-14

The NASCAR Cup Series heads back to Atlanta Motor Speedway, now known as Echo Park Speedway, for the Quaker State 400. Here is everything you need to know for Saturday night’s Cup Series action.
NASCAR Cup Series Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway
The first return to a track we have previously raced at this season, the second trip to Atlanta is a night race under the lights at the newly named Echo Park Speedway. We have seen some exciting moments at this track in the past, will we get another exciting finish? Or could it be the pace car leading the most laps at Echo Park?
Last fall, it was Joey Logano getting his only win of the 2024 playoffs that catapulted him to a third title. But back in February, it was Christopher Bell taking the win? Could these two win Saturday night, or will another driver step up to the challenge?

Race Preview:
The Quaker State 400 at Echo Park Speedway is a 400-mile, 260-lap race around the 1.5-mile racetrack. Stage cautions will be on laps 60 and 160, and the checkered flag on lap 260. 11,055,250 dollars are up for grabs in the prize purse for this race. Teams will have 9 sets of tires, 8 sticker sets, and 1 from their qualifying run. The Goodyear tires are made specifically for Atlanta and have been used since 2024.
The Track-Atlanta Motor Speedway
Built in 1960, Atlanta Motor Speedway has seen numerous reconfigurations across its lifespan. Its most recent repave saw the track go from 24 degrees of banking to 28 degrees. This has turned the track into a mini-superspeedway, producing pack racing and moves we used to only see at Daytona and Talladega.

Joey Logano has the most wins at the track on the new surface, with two. Josh Berry set the track record in 2024 with a 29.361-second lap.
Cup Series Point Standings:
Here are the point standings following the race at Pocono Raceway:
1. William Byron: 623
2. Kyle Larson: 569
3. Denny Hamlin: 545
4. Christopher Bell: 544
5. Chase Elliott: 543
6. Ryan Blaney: 503
7. Tyler Reddick: 490
8. Ross Chastain: 454
9. Chase Briscoe: 450
10. Joey Logano: 436

Drivers To Watch:
We have four drivers joining the field for this race:
- Corey LaJoie will drive the #01 Ford for Rick Ware Racing
- David Starr will drive the #66 Ford for Garage 66
- B.J. McLeod will drive his #78 Chevy for Live Fast Motorsports
- Connor Zilisch will drive the #87 Chevy for Trackhouse Racing
Looking at drivers who could drive to victory in the Quaker State 400. Realistically, I believe the winners will come from either Chevy or Ford. While Toyota is the defending winner here, it is an outlier in the data.
For the blue ovals, I think Blaney is the guy to beat from the Ford camp. 4th in February, 3rd last September, the results are tracking towards a win. Another Ford driver who needs to have a good weekend is Brad Keselowski. He is 30th in points and is in must-win territory to even make the playoffs. If Brad is gonna win somewhere, I think his best chance is Atlanta.
Daniel Suarez is also way below the playoff cut line, but the good news is. Atlanta is one of his best racetracks. A win in 2024 and has never finished worse than sixth in the second race. Another driver needing a win, and this is one of their best shots at one.

When you think of drafting and Toyota, I think of Denny Hamlin and his 23XI driver, Bubba Wallace. Hamlin ran second at Pocono last Sunday, so he’s got some momentum. Bubba needs a rebound from the brake failure DNF he had last week. Look for the #23 and the #11 saturday night

Atlanta Motor Speedway, which is now technically known as EchoPark Speedway for sponsorship purposes, is set to become the first track to host two races during the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season.
The four-turn, 1.54-mile (2.478-kilometer) Hampton, Georgia oval hosted the season’s second race back in February, and now it is scheduled to host its 18th race this Saturday. Last year’s second Atlanta race was not contested until September in the playoffs.
As was the case in February, NASCAR utilized the new two-variable qualifying formula to determine the qualifying order this weekend, rather than the four-variable formula that was abandoned after the 2024 season.
A full explanation of the new metric can be found here.
Qualifying is simple. There are no more groups and thus no more row-by-row lane designations. There is still a second round shootout for the pole position. All 40 drivers on the entry list are set to make a single single-lap qualifying attempt, and speeds from those runs are set to determine the starting lineup from 11th to 40th place. The top 10 drivers are set to make a second single-lap attempt to battle for pole.
Update: Due to weather, there is just one round of qualifying.
Follow along with our qualifying updates from Atlanta.

A field of more than 70 cars is expected to compete July 1-2 at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for one of the most prestigious prizes in the United States Auto Club NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship – victory in the BC39 Presented by Avanti Windows & Doors.
The list of past winners is impressive, with stars Brady Bacon (2018), Zeb Wise (2019), Kyle Larson (2021), Buddy Kofoid (2022), Justin Grant (2023) and Cannon McIntosh (2024) kissing the bricks on the outside wall at the start-finish line of the 1/5th-mile dirt oval inside Turn 3 at IMS.
Grant and McIntosh are among the drivers competing this year, trying to become the first two-time winners of this event that honors late USAC champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 starter Bryan Clauson.
Drivers representing 18 states and three countries (USA, Canada, England) are entered, with more expected early next week.
On-track action begins Tuesday, July 1 at IMS with a full program of events for both the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship and the Stoops Junior Sprint Invitational. Owen and Audrey Larson, the young son and daughter of NASCAR superstar and BC39 winner Kyle Larson, are expected to drive in the Junior Sprint race.
Public gates open at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, with hot laps at 6 p.m. and competition at 7 p.m. A 30-lap feature for the midgets will be the main event of the evening. Fans then can enter the track after the checkered flag for the feature and talk with drivers and see the race cars up close.
Championship night of the BC39 on Wednesday, July 2 will consist of full programs for both the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship and the Stoops Junior Sprint Invitational. Public gates open at 4 p.m., followed by a driver autograph session at 4:30 in the driver merchandise area and hot laps at 6 p.m. Racing starts immediately after the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m., culminating in a 39-lap feature event for the midgets paying $20,039 to win.
Tickets are on sale at ims.com/BC39. Spectators must enter IMS via Gate 10 off 30th Street to access The Dirt Track. No entrance will be allowed through Gate 2.
For more spectator information, fans should visit the Plan Ahead site for the BC39.
