Griffin earns the honor for the second-straight season.
All finalists for the DIII and DII Honda Athlete of the Year will be honored during a live telecast on CBS Sports Network in June in New York City. Griffin will look to join Julia Bergofsky ’22, Erin Nicholas ’22 and Jane Early ’23 as the fourth Panther to take home the prestigious honor.
Middlebury’s Amy Griffin has been awarded the Division III Honda Athlete of the Year for field hockey, announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda. Griffin takes home the honor for the second-consecutive season.
“It is such an honor to coach Amy Griffin, as she is an elite field hockey player and a truly exceptional human being,” said Borgen Family Head Coach of Field Hockey Katharine DeLorenzo. “Her ‘by example’ leadership is powerful and elevates the level of hockey being played by all those around her. Amy leads with grace, skill, vision and humor. Her commitment and contributions to her team, her coaches, Middlebury, and the sport of field hockey are extraordinary to witness and are the high standard by which we all measure ourselves.”
- Griffin joined Lauren Greer ’13 and Erin Nicholas ’22 as the only field hockey players in program history to be named NFHCA Player of the Year more than once.
- The Panther won NFHCA Region II Player of the Year, NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, and was named a First-Team All-American, All-Region, and All-NESCAC selection.
- She led Middlebury with a team and conference-best 14 assists while adding 11 goals.
- With her 14 helpers, Griffin finished her career with 49, passing the previous program mark of 48 set by Catherine Fowler ’14.
- The midfielder was a workhorse, racking up the third-most minutes (1,112) and starting all 21 contests this fall. She tallied at least one point in 15 games
- Griffin tallied the game-winner three times, including in the national semifinal victory over Salisbury.
- She earned a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team for the fourth-consecutive campaign.
- The senior finished her Middlebury career appearing and starting 87 straight contests, recording 161 points (56G, 49A) over 4,438 of action.
“I am extremely honored and grateful to be named the field hockey finalist for the DIII Honda Athlete of the Year once again,” said Griffin. “This award is a testament to my incredible team, and I can’t say enough about my teammates, coaches, trainers, and all of the Middlebury Athletics staff who offered support every day. It has been a privilege to play for Middlebury alongside my best friends and I couldn’t imagine a better year to end my career with.”
