Improperly plowed road led to water polo coach’s death after car is unable to pull over, gets slammed into by semi-truck and goes off overpass: Lawsuit
Colleen Lischwe, center (McKendree University). The husband of a respected water polo coach who died earlier this year in a crash with a semi-truck is suing the State of Missouri claiming an improperly plowed highway led to her death. The husband of a respected water polo coach who died earlier this year in a crash with a semi-truck is suing the State of Missouri claiming an improperly plowed highway led to her death.
Colleen Lischwe, 35, on Jan. 15 was driving her 2011 Toyota Prius east on Interstate 44 when she had an issue that caused her to try and pull over to the shoulder. However, because there was snow from a recent storm on the shoulder, she could not move all the way over, the lawsuit filed May 8 said.
More from Law&Crime: ‘Thought it was a joke’: Parents given ‘the wrong ashes’ of 2-year-old by crematory who let child’s body rot in his funeral clothes, lawsuit says
The driver of a semi-truck traveling around 65 mph behind Lischwe apparently did not see her car and plowed into the back of her. Lischwe’s Prius went over the snowbank and fell from the overpass down onto the city street below. She suffered “severe facial and head trauma” and massive internal bleeding, the suit said, which led to her death.
Now Lischwe’s husband Casey Colgan is suing the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) for negligence, saying it failed to follow its own policies when removing snow from highways.
“Defendant MHTC, acting by and through its employees and agents, caused the portion of public highway on which Decedent was injured to be dangerous and unsafe for the public, and was negligent and breached its duties of care in several respects,” the lawsuit states.
The commission knew or should have known that improperly paved snow could create ramps along the highway, making an “unreasonable risk of injury to the public” including Lischwe.

It does not specify an amount of damages Colgan is seeking but includes funeral expenses and pain and suffering. The Department of Transportation declined to comment when reached by local CBS affiliate KMOV .
Lischwe was the head coach for the men’s and women’s water polo team at McKendree University, a NCAA Division II school in Lebanon, Illinois. The impact was heavy on her student-athletes.
“Colleen embodied what it means to be a servant leader and cherished her opportunities to teach and develop young men and women. She was a close friend and colleague to many, and helped to create the special bond that exists within the McKendree community,” the school said in a press release .

“She loved all her athletes and challenged them to develop strong character and respect for one another, alongside the technical skills and strategies of the game,” her obituary said.
A GoFundMe raised over $100,000 for her family.

FSU got its first two batters on base in the bottom of the seventh as Annabelle Widra and Isa Torres hit back-to-back singles, but the Noles were unable to bring a run across.

The Long Beach State men’s volleyball team has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for 14 straight weeks. On Monday night, they’ll have the opportunity to prove it.
It’s down to two teams in the NCAA men’s volleyball tournament, and once again, it’s UCLA and Long Beach State in the national championship. The pair will square off on Monday at 4 pm pst in the the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio, in a rematch of last year’s championship.
“Now we’re left with two which is always the goal,” said LBSU coach Alan Knipe. “You always want to have a fighter’s chance left in the game of the season and that’s what we have. That;s what we’ve wanted and now we get a chance to go out and execute our way through it and that’ll be the goal. It’s two really talented teams playing good volleyball and it’ll come down to execution and a few points here and there which it always does.”
A national championship win would be the fourth in program history for the Beach, with the most recent title coming against UCLA in 2018. Since then, LBSU has faced UCLA four times in the Final Four, with their fifth meeting set for Monday. The Bruins have eliminated LBSU in each of the last two NCAA tournaments.
Last year, Long Beach State came up just short against UCLA in the national championship in a four set loss in the Walter Pyramid. The Beach has since lost 10 of their seniors and look totally different from a year ago. Senior DiAeris McRaven is the only starter in the same position from last year and reflected on the path back to the championship game.
“I think last year, falling short in the finals and even falling short in the Big West I think we’re all hungry for championship for sure,” said McRaven. “Something we always talk about is making sure that we play at our very best right at the end of the season…We’re very hungry for this final game.”
Though it’ll be recalled as ‘the rematch,’ there really isn’t much the same about these two individual teams in recent years. Both programs have seen frequent roster changes in past seasons — and even throughout this season players have moved in and out of each lineup. The Bruins also have a new coach this year, John Hawks, who took over for long-time coach John Speraw.
This year, it wasn’t as close as it was intense when the two teams met for their regular season series. The Beach walked away with a pair of wins from that series to stay undefeated at the time, winning in four sets at the Walter Pyramid on Feb. 7 before sweeping them a few days later on Feb. 12 at the Pauley Pavilion.
A lot has changed for the Beach since their regular season matches, but one thing has remained constant: Moni Nikolov. The Bulgarian setter just added some history to his resume in the semifinals against Pepperdine by passing Emmanuel’s Curtis Abram for the single-season ace record. Abram set the record in 2011 in 121 sets, while Nikolov broke it in just his 106th set and is up to 102 aces.
Nikolov recorded eight aces across the two matches against UCLA in February, but he’ll be surrounded by a few different pieces this time around. The Bruins have yet to face Nato Dickinson and Alex Kandev, who have stepped up this season in response to a handful of Beach injuries. The pair each recorded a match-high 19 kills in Saturday’s semifinal against Pepperdine.
“There’s been so much change for our team,” Knipe said. “But they’ve evolved. Their pieces are slightly different and the style they’re trying to play is different early on so we’ll see when we get out there but it’s gonna come down to execution of high level volleyball and it’ll be close sets. We’re gonna get after it.”
Since their first meeting, UCLA has arranged some of their personnel which has included involvement from freshman outside Sean Kelly. Zach Rama has been moved from outside to opposite while Cooper Robinson has remained as another big outside for the Bruins. Sean McQuiggan has also remained strong for UCLA in the middle.
“Both us and Long Beach are two very different teams,” said the senior McQuiggan. “Obviously you think about it when they beat us twice but we’re going to come out there and play our best level of volleyball.”
LBSU and UCLA will square off at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio, to decide a national champion at 4 pm pst/7pm est. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN2.
“These two teams have played a lot in the Final Four in recent years and they’ve always been great matches and dog fights,” Knipe said. “I would imagine nothing less than that. That’s what the players want and I’m sure that’s what everybody who’s watching wants.”

Grand Canyon heads to a new place with a familiar feel. While GCU will compete at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nevada, for the first time, the NCAA Regional implications are becoming the norm for Mark Mueller and his squad.
Despite finishing second at the WAC Championship in Payson two weeks ago, the ranking has only gone up over the past few seasons. Low 70’s was a program best in 2023, followed by low 60’s in 2024. Now, GCU enters the Reno Regional ranked No. 58, the highest in program history into the NCAA Regional that sees five teams advance to the NCAA Championship.
The ranking of 58 gave GCU an at-large bid, a testament to its tough schedule and top finishes throughout the season, which ranged from early September to late April.
The 14 team Regional in Reno will be hosted by Nevada, with tee times beginning on holes one and 10 as early as 9 a.m. GCU will field the same starting five as it did during the WAC Championship, featuring graduate Tommaso Zorzetto, senior Kiko Coelho, sophomore Gavin O’Neill, and freshmen Nixon Lauritzen and Matthew Diehl. The Lopes begin play at 10:20 a.m. on hole 10.
While the Lopes have been in the NCAA Regional before, competing for the first time in 2023 in Morgan Hill, California, and last year in Austin, Texas, this is the first time all five players in the starting lineup were named to the All-WAC postseason team. Diehl, one of the nation’s top freshman, was named WAC Freshman of the Year and joined Zorzetto and Lauritzen on the All-WAC First Team. O’Neill and Coelho each garnered second team accolades as the group set a program best for All-WAC award winners in one season.
Eight of the 14 teams in Reno own a nationally ranked top 50 tag via Clippd Scoreboard rankings. The number one team in the field includes No. 4 Texas, followed by top 25 teams No. 9 Virginia, No. 16 Alabama, and No. 21 Duke.
The Lopes last played regular season tournament was the Thunderbird Intercollegiate at Papago, a field that saw seven teams ranked in the top 50. GCU earned fifth, just three shots back of third with a 20 under total.
The Reno Regional field includes No. 4 Texas, No. 9 Virginia, No. 16 Alabama, No. 21 Duke, No. 28 Mississippi State, No. 33 BYU, No. 40 San Diego, No. 45 Santa Clara, Grand Canyon, Fairfield, East Tennessee State, California, Sam Houston, and Central Arkansas.
The top five teams after 54 holes at Montreux G&C automatically advance to the NCAA National Championship in Carlsbad, California, May 23-28.
Live results of the Reno Regional can be found here.
