As a result of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s competition to support the international competition held by local governments next year, a total of 22 competitions were finally selected in 11 cities and provinces, including the Gwangju 2025 Hyundai World Archery Championship, the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championship, and the 2025 LGT World Women’s Curling Championship.

The project to support international competitions hosted by local governments is to select competitive and excellent competitions among international competitions held by local governments across the country and support the operating costs of the competition. Through this, local governments are holding excellent competitions to revitalize the local economy and local sports, and domestic athletes are improving their performance at the competition based on the advantages of domestic hosting.

In this contest, a total of 34 competitions were applied from 13 cities and provinces, and 22 competitions were finally selected from 11 cities and provinces. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism applied screening criteria such as “the purpose and status of the competition,” “the effect of activating sports participation,” “regional revitalization,” “financial management appropriateness,” and “comprehensive safety measures” so that the competition can be held faithfully, and the average amount of support for each competition is 270 million won.

The 2025 Daegu Marathon and the 2025 Tongyeong World Triathlon Cup were selected for support following 2024. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism explained, “If local governments continue to attract and hold outstanding international competitions, it is expected that local governments and sports competitions will be linked to each other, making the local government imprinted on the world as a representative city of the event and laying the foundation for continuous attraction of tourists.”

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will also hold an observer program next year to provide a place for local government officials and sports organizations to observe excellent international competitions held in Korea and share secrets to attract and host the competition. This year, more than 200 local government officials and sports organizations visited three international competitions hosted by local governments, including the 2024 Seoul Sports Climbing World Cup, and shared secrets to attract, host and operate the competition. It will also evaluate the performance of the selected competition. By inspecting the site during the competition and evaluating the results after the competition, the excellent competitions will be given additional points for screening the next year to foster them as excellent competitions by region, and competitions that need to be improved in the operation of the competition will be managed to improve the level of the competition through consulting.

Choi Sung-hee, Sports Cooperation Officer of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “The Ministry of Culture will continue to support excellent international competitions held by local governments in the future to strengthen Korea’s sports competitiveness. We will also actively support local governments to brand distinctive sports to promote the region at home and abroad and revitalize the local economy, he said.
