A's beat Brewers 3

The A’s beat the Brewers on Saturday afternoon, beating Milwaukee 3-1 to improve the team’s record to 10-11.

Facing former A’s prospect Chad Patrick, the team only managed a few hits through the game’s first three innings. The Brewers meanwhile scored a run off starting pitcher Luis Severino in the third to give Milwaukee the first lead of the day. That would be the only damage the Brewers would manage against Severino as the right-hander pitched eight innings and allowed just two more hits the rest of the day. He only managed one strikeout but also didn’t give any free passes away. This was the longest outing from Severino this year and his season ERA now stands at a nice 3.31 mark.

The Athletics’ offense finally got going in the fifth against Patrick. Back-to-back singles to open the frame were followed by an RBI double off the bat of Miguel Andujar. That tied this game with two runners still in scoring position and no outs but the next two batters struck out and a fly out killed the rally. The game was tied but the team left some meat on the bone there.

Looking to take the lead the Green & Gold did just that the very next inning. Designated hitter Brent Rooker took the seventh pitch of his at-bat in the sixth and sent it over the right-field wall for a solo shot to give the A’s their first lead of the day:

That blast gave the team a small lead. Catcher Shea Langeliers added on an insurance run with a solo blast himself in the ninth for some extra breathing room:

In line for his first win in an Athletics’ uniform, Severino finished off his outing by retiring the final eight batters he faced. That set up closer Mason Miller for the save opportunity and he slammed the door shut on the Brewers with a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

The win evens up the series and sets up an interesting Sunday matchup between these two squads. The A’s are now 10-11 after tonight and can get to the .500 mark with a win in tomorrow’s series finale. It’ll be lefty Jeffrey Springs for the Athletics while Milwaukee will go with right-hander Logan Henderson, who will be making his big league debut tomorrow. Let’s finish the road trip on a winning note!

Missouri gymnastics added a new athlete with Dakota Essenpries, who is transferring from Arkansas. The incoming junior will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Essenpries represents an exciting addition to an already talented Missouri squad. Her decision to be a Tiger is also a homecoming, as she is from Adrian, Mo.

She will focus on vault, an event she specialized on at Arkansas. Essenpries performs a Yurchenko 1.5 and with it, she logged a 9.850 or higher on five occasions. Her National Qualifying Score in 2025 was a 9.845.

Essenpries earned her career high, 9.900, on vault in the second round of the Penn State Regional this year, which tied her for second place in the event.

Essenpries joins Missouri at an ideal time, as the Tigers are losing seniors Amari Celestine and Jocelyn Moore. Both Celestine and Moore regularly competed on vault for the Tigers, so Essenpries can look to fill the gap.

None.

SCRANTON — The Most Rev. Joseph C. Bambera, Bishop of Scranton, released the following statement on the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, as the new pope, who has chosen the papal name Leo XIV:

“Today is a day of great joy and thanksgiving in the life of the Church as we welcome a new Successor to the See of St. Peter.

“I invite all the faithful of the Diocese of Scranton to join me in fervently praying for our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, who has been chosen today by the College of Cardinals as the 267th Pope.

“While the election of Pope Leo XIV is historic as the first North American to be elected pope, his vast missionary experience of walking among the poor and serving those on the margins with humility, will serve him well as he echoes Christ’s call of going forth and making disciples of all nations to all people.

“With this selection, I believe the Cardinals have recognized the vibrancy, faithfulness and strength of the Church in the United States. For generations, American Catholics have sought to embrace the Gospel with compassion — and having a shepherd chosen from among us is both humbling and affirming. It also speaks to the goodness that has grown in the church of North America — a goodness bearing fruit in service and evangelization.

“We entrust Pope Leo XIV to the care of the Holy Spirit. May his heart be open to divine guidance, and may he be filled with strength, wisdom, courage, insight and compassion for the great responsibility that lies before him.

“This is a beautiful moment for our Church to show its unity. Let us remain united in prayer — and especially hope — in the weeks and months ahead as the 2025 Jubilee Year continues.”

Bedell to play soccer at Trevecca Nazarene University

“I think probably my senior season would stand out out the most, because that was when everything came together,” Bedell said. “Everything I’ve been working for the past four years came together, and it was when I had most of my achievements, most of my goals and most of my assists.”

Poplar Bluff coach Rusty Crafton had words of praise for Bedell.

“He’s meant everything to this program,” Crafton said. “Our whole team pretty much surrounded him the last couple of years — that’s how talented a player he is. And not only just with the goals and assists, but he’s just a complete player on the field and he changes the game. He’s a game-changer, and he’s going to do some great things at the next level. I think (he will make an) immediate impact for his college.”

Crafton expects it will be a challenge for Bedell to crack the TNU starting lineup, but he also believes will be up to the challenge.

“I think that’s going to challenge him,” Crafton said. “I think it’s going to be really tough for him to get (in the starting lineup) the first year, but I think he’s got a chance. There are going to be a lot of foreign players that he’s got to compete against, but he works hard, and I think he’s going to push himself to get one of those starting spots eventually.”

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban is expected to co-chair a new presidential commission on college sports reform, initiated by President Donald Trump.

The commission aims to address significant issues in college athletics, including Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) payments, transfer rules, and conference alignments.

A source told The Athletic that Saban, a vocal critic of the current NIL system, will work alongside a prominent businessman with deep ties to college athletics.

The initiative follows a meeting between Trump and Saban at the University of Alabama’s spring graduation, where they reportedly discussed the state of college sports.

The outlet also reports that the President will be “very engaged” with the commission as they attempt to steer collegiate sports in a better direction.

Saban responded to the news late last night on X, writing, “It’s Time to get College Football back on Track!!!”
