WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Ashley High School triumphed in the first-ever state flag football championship match against Apex High School.
After being behind 7-6 at the break, the Eagles made a comeback in the second half, ultimately securing a 13-7 victory.
Sawyer Rigdon was awarded the Most Valuable Player for the state championship match. Her teammate, Mia Agrillo, received the Defensive Most Outstanding Player accolade. Lindsey McKinney from Apex was honored with the Offensive Most Outstanding Player award.
The flag football state playoff marked a groundbreaking event. The sport isn’t officially recognized by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, meaning the state championship is technically an unofficial title.
Flag football is regarded as one of the fastest developing high school sports across the United States. The Carolina Panthers have invested in the sport within North Carolina. The Panthers report that 119 high schools in the state are participating in the sport this year.
