Athletics shake up roster during 9

Mired in a nine-game losing streak, the Athletics shook up their roster Friday and called up five players, including highly touted prospect Denzel Clarke.

Veteran Seth Brown was designated for assignment amid moves that general manager David Forst hopes will give the club more flexibility.

“Ultimately, obviously we’re in a stretch right now we’re not finding ways to win,” Forst said in a video news conference. “I think we’re better than we’ve shown the last 10 days.”

Clarke, a 25-year-old center fielder known for his standout defense, speed and power, was the team’s fourth round selection in the 2021 amateur draft. He was set to start and make his major league debut Friday night for the A’s (22-29) in the opener of a three-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies at home in West Sacramento.

Clarke was batting .286 with no home runs, 21 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 31 games with Las Vegas. His .436 on-base percentage ranked fourth in the Pacific Coast League.

Also recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas were left-hander Jacob Lopez and infielder CJ Alexander, while catcher Willie MacIver and infielder Logan Davidson were selected from Las Vegas.

During the skid, the club has been outscored 72-26, is batting .209 and has a team ERA of 8.23 while allowing 23 home runs.

Outfielder JJ Bleday was optioned to Triple-A along with right-hander Carlos Duran and catcher Jhonny Pereda. The A’s also transferred second baseman Zack Gelof to the 60-day injured list.

Forst said Bleday needed a “reset” to find a rhythm at the plate and on defense — something he couldn’t find playing every day at the big league level right now. Manager Mark Kotsay spoke to Bleday on Friday about the move.

“Hopefully he’ll be back here very soon,” Forst said.

Third baseman Gio Urshela was placed on the 10-day injured list after straining his left hamstring in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. He underwent an MRI on Friday.

Urshela left the game in the sixth inning with the injury of the 10-5 defeat.

Urshela went 1 for 2 with a bases-loaded walk in the game. He is batting .224 with no homers and 13 RBIs in 32 games this season.

The 32-year-old Brown had been the longest-tenured player on the team but struggling to get regular opportunities. He spent time in the minor leagues last year for a stretch and Forst remained hopeful of him clearing waivers and playing for Las Vegas before returning at some point to the A’s.

He was hitting .192 with a home run and three RBIs in 33 games.

NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of Dayton javelin throwers Casey Bogues and Daniela Peralta have been named All-Academic Athletes for the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Track & Field seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale (including the most recent grading period) and must have participated in at least one round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

This marks the fourth time Bogues has been named an All-Academic Athlete by the USTFCCCA. The graduate student, who was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team in May, capped off her career at the NCAA East Regional. A native of Red Bank, New Jersey, Bogues is one of the most decorated athletes in program history. She is a four-time Atlantic 10 champion in the javelin, holds 16 career wins, and owns the program’s longest throw. A two-time U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, she recently earned her master’s degree in Literacy with a perfect 4.0 GPA in graduate school.

Peralta, a Sport Management major, earns All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA for the first time. The Gillette, New Jersey native recorded a personal-best throw of 47.50m to win the Mount Union Last Chance Meet in May — the third-longest javelin throw in program history. After missing most of the 2024 season due to injury, the redshirt sophomore bounced back in 2025 with seven top-five finishes and a trip to the NCAA East Regional.

LOS ANGELES – Junior outside hitters Cheridyn Leverette and Maggie Li have been named to the AVCA Division I Player of the Year Award Watch List, presented by Nike Volleyball, announced on Tuesday morning.

Leverette and Li are two of 30 standout athletes selected from 20 institutions to appear on the watch list. UCLA is one of just nine programs to boast multiple honorees.

Leverette’s quickly emerged as one of top player players in the nation to stardom following her breakout 2024 season where she earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention and First Team All-Big Ten honors. After limited appearances in 2022, she emerged as a reliable starter in 2023, ranking third on the team with 288 kills and leading in service aces. By 2024, Leverette led the Bruins in five statistical categories, totaled 435 kills with 20+ kills in three matches, and posted a remarkable 29-kill outing at Purdue—the highest kill tally by a Bruin in the last three years. Her consistency was unmatched, recording double-digit kills in 27 of 28 matches and becoming just the fifth Bruin in the rally scoring era with 20 straight matches in double figures.

Li will join UCLA after two fantastic seasons as a standout outside hitter at Cal. As a freshman in 2023, she led all Division I newcomers in multiple categories and became the first in program history to earn AVCA Pacific West Region Freshman of the Year and VolleyballMag All-America Honorable Mention. She continued her dominance in 2024, starting every match and ranking among the ACC’s top three in kills, kills per set, and total points. She went on to register a total of 463 kills and seven double-doubles. Li earned Pac-12 and ACC weekly honors at record-setting rates and posted seven 20+ kill performances, including a season-high 28 against Saint Mary’s.
