The county and conference championship stretch of the season is upon us, which means we’re seeing more open events, and with that came some ridiculous times in Week 7 for both the boys and girls.

Union Catholic standout Paige Sheppard dropped a new sophomore state record 2:03.84 in the 800 and Pennsauken junior Sianni Wynn ripped a South Jersey record 52.8 in the 400 dash on the girls’ end.

For the boys, Southern senior Cole Cramer matched his N.J. No. 2 all-time 100 dash of 10.35 at the Puma East Coast International Showcase in Baltimore and St. Peter’s Prep star Jevon Ledgister clocked a freshman state record 10.63 in the same race.

Toms River North’s boys matched a state record 56.58 in the 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay, but with the Ocean County Relay Championships being one of just a few relay meets last week, it won’t be featured in this week’s boys honor roll. Starting this week in the honor roll, NJ.com is listing times in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600, 3,200 and 100H as opposed to relay events such as the shuttle hurdle relay, 4×200, SMR and DMR as seen in prior weeks.

During the fourth inning of Sunday’s outing against the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox ace starting pitcher Garrett Crochet was grazed by an 86.7 mph line drive off the bat of Carlos Correa. Crochet seemingly avoided near catastrophe by the ball that nicked his nose, but he was luckily able to get mostly out of the way.

“Fine. It barely grazed me. I was more shaken up at [the] initial impact than anything,” Crochet said about how he was after the scary moment. “I immediately just [went] to touch my nose to see if it felt normal, but it was like numb at first just from the initial impact, but it’s fine.”

Unfazed, Crochet remained on the mound through the fifth inning, faced eight batters after the incident, and even struck out the next batter immediately after. Which, was quite the showing of toughness from the Sox’ No. 1.

He ended the afternoon allowing four hits, one earned run (a home run), and two walks in five innings. He notched six strikeouts. Overall, another decently strong outing on the bump for the lefty.

After the game, Crochet did tell reporters that there was “just a little bit” of blood coming from his nose after being hit but “not very much at all.” Nonetheless, his ability to stay in the game and still pitch at a high level is impressive.

The Red Sox did end up losing to the Twins 5-4, but it was certainly not Crochet’s fault. He had them in the lead 3-1. The Red Sox’ bullpen conceded the lead by allowing two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Crochet has been the reliable ace that the Sox had hoped for when they brought him in, so they should consider themselves lucky that he avoided that ball for the most part and is not looking at a severe injury. Plus, credit to Crochet for his resilience and not letting that moment impact his play.

Athletes are excited to converge on Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium in pursuit of coveted Lackawanna Track Conference championships.

However, they are going to have to wait one more day.

The 18th Robert Spagna Championship meet is postponed until Wednesday at 4 p.m. because of expected inclement weather Tuesday.

Last season, West Scranton boys won their first conference championship since 1962 by claiming the Class 3A title. Mid Valley boys captured their third straight conference team title.

In girls, Abington Heights won its second-straight Class 3A championship and 13th overall while Lakeland won its second straight title in Class 2A and 10th overall.

Also, there are 11 individual champions returning from last season.

North Pocono senior Kaitlyn Kravitz won the 100-meter dash, the 400, and the 200 to star in the girls’ meet last season.

Carbondale Area senior Kate Korty won the 800, and Abington Heights’ Anna Pucilowski was the champion in the 3,200.

In the field events, Abington Heights senior Tomara Seid won the gold in the triple jump, Scranton Prep senior Peyton Fox won the discus, and Delaware Valley senior Rainna Carr won the shot put.

Dunmore senior Tommy Clark won the 800, Valley View senior Tom Fiorelli won the shot put, and Western Wayne junior Robbie Carrelle earned the gold in the pole vault; Holy Cross senior Matt Lyons won the high jump, and his teammate Kevin Vincent won the triple jump in the boys meet.

The Spagna Championships serveas the conference championship meet that was held from 1950 to 1989 before being stopped. The meet resumed in 2005 and honors the late Robert Spagna, the Hall of Fame official and face of track and field in Northeast Pennsylvania, who died in 2015.

Athletes to watch

Tommy Clark, Dunmore: The senior who is headed to Lafayette College to play soccer is coming off a fantastic night at the Jordan Relays. He helped the Bucks win two gold medals and had a comeback win in the final 400 meters with a split time of 48.2 seconds to win the 1,600 relay in the final event of the night. He has mostly focused on the 400 this season and was the champion in the 800 with a time of 1:58.84.

Ella Smith, Wallenpaupack: As a sophomore, Smith won a conference championship in the 300 hurdles. Last season, she finished eighth in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles. Smith had the best time in Division II for the 100 hurdles (15.84) and the 300 hurdles (47.74) this spring.

Tom Fiorelli, Valley View: The senior has dominated the shot put for three seasons. He set the school record in the event for the outdoor season and has the best put in the LTC at 52 feet, 7.5 inches. Last season, Fiorelli won his first conference championship with a distance of 48-7.

Gianna Tewksbury, Elk Lake: The senior has had a record-setting season for the Lady Warriors. She won silver medals at the Spagna Championships in the discus in 2023 and 2024. This season, Tewksbury had the best distance in the event with a mark of 118-0 while also providing first-place finishes in the javelin.

Robbie Carrelle, Western Wayne: He is a multi-event athlete who has excelled in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, while also having the top height for the pole vault in the LTC this season. Carrelle had the top time in Division II for the 110 hurdles (15.50) and the pole vault (14-0). Last season, he won the pole vault with a height of 12-6.

Tomara Seid, Abington Heights: The multi-event standout was a 20-point producer in meets all season for the Lady Comets. She is the defending champion in the triple jump. Seid had the top marks in the long jump (17-1.5), the triple jump (38-0), and the pole vault (11-6) in Division I.
