East Lansing, Mich. — Michigan State sophomore Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) is among the 35 Division I goaltenders on the 2025 Richter Award Watch List. The Richter Award is presented annually to the top goaltender in Division I men’s ice hockey.
For the second consecutive season, Augustine is the youngest full-time starting goaltender in Division I hockey. No goalies younger than Augustine have played in more than eight games so far this season. He is a February 2005 birth year and is a second-round draft pick (41st overall) of the Detroit Red Wings in 2023.
Augustine – who is a standout on both the college and international stage – is on the Watch List for this award for the second straight season. Augustine is the Big Ten leader and ranks sixth nationally in wins (11), is second in save percentage (.931, T-11th NCAA) and shutouts (2, T-8th NCAA), and is third in GAA (1.97, 14th NCAA). He is also second in the league in games played (15) minutes played (912:18). Among his 11 victories this season is a 4-1-1 mark against top 15 teams as Michigan State has compiled an 18-2-2 overall record and holds the No. 1 spot in both national polls.
Augustine missed four games in December and January to participate in the IIHF World Junior Championships, where he backstopped Team USA to a second consecutive gold medal. He compiled a .917 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average in this year’s tournament, appearing in five of Team USA’s seven games. Augustine is one of 19 of goaltenders all-time to make three WJC squads in their career, also an IIHF record for goaltenders. He became Team USA’s winningest goaltender at this event with his 11th and 12th all-time victories, moving past Jack Campbell’s 10 (2010-12).
Augustine is a five-time medalist at youth international events. Along with current Spartan teammate Isaac Howard, Augustine won a gold medal at World Juniors in 2024; he also won a bronze in 2023, when he was teammates with Red Savage and Charlie Stramel. Augustine also won silver (2022) and gold (2023) at the U18 World Championships. Last spring, he made his first men’s Team USA senior World Championship squad, playing four games with a roster primarily made up of NHL players.
A committee of voters which includes coaches, administrators, scouts, and media will reduce the list to approximately a dozen finalists by early January, and then choose a winner from three finalists who will be announced at the NCAA Frozen Four in April.
