NORFOLK, Va. — In the lead-up to the 66th running of the Coca-Cola 600, Charlotte Motor Speedway continued its longstanding tradition of honoring America’s Armed Forces through Mission 600, a series of educational and interactive visits by NASCAR drivers to regional military bases.
On Wednesday, Coca-Cola Racing Family driver Austin Dillon and Richard Childress Racing pit crew coach Ray Wright took part in this year’s campaign by spending the afternoon with sailors at Naval Station Norfolk.
As part of the visit, Dillon and Wright toured the USS Cole, where they engaged with the crew and learned about the ship’s operations and storied history.
They also had the opportunity to test their abilities in state-of-the-art operational simulators and took part in hands-on damage control drills aboard the USS Kearsarge. Throughout the day, the racing team members got a firsthand look at the daily routines and responsibilities of the sailors stationed at the base.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and helped bridge the gap between the NASCAR community and the U.S. Armed Forces. Mission 600 continues to be a central element of Charlotte Motor Speedway’s efforts to honor and connect with those who serve.
The Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest race and a Memorial Day weekend staple, will take place later this month at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
