Shortly after vacating the premises, the subjects returned to retrieve the vehicle they used to drive to the scene and began firing at the deputy once again. Video surveillance of the incident was submitted to JPD’s robbery and homicide unit.The Kia, later discovered to be stolen, was occupied by multiple young Black males. Police were unable to give an exact figure of occupants.

One of the subjects allegedly hopped into the deputy’s car and attempted to drive away. The officer then exited the convenience store and was met with gunfire. The deputy retaliated, causing the suspects to flee on foot. A bystander was grazed in the crossfire and transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.
State authorities are investigating an exchange of gunfire involving an off-duty Hinds County reserve deputy amid an attempted auto theft at a Jackson gas station over the weekend.

According to the Jackson Police Department, the incident happened in the 3200 block of Medgar Evers Boulevard on Sunday around 11 a.m. The unidentified male law enforcement officer is reported to have parked his vehicle and walked inside the establishment as a Kia SUV pulled into the parking lot.
The suspects involved have not been identified by law enforcement. No arrests have been made at this time. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the assessment of the occurrence. Those with valuable information are encouraged to contact local authorities.
