Finishing the 2024 tournament without a single loss as a team, the Colts featured a pair of wrestlers who went undefeated in individual matchups, with Preston Giles and Chevy Joyce each ending the tournament with a 5-0 record.Following the three-hour tournament, the Coahulla Creek Colts emerged victorious to bring home the turtle trophy after going undefeated against area rivals Dalton High, Northwest Whitfield High, Southeast Whitfield High, Murray County High and North Murray High. After a 44-31 victory against Southeast and a 42-31 win over Dalton early in the tournament, the Colts bested Northwest 65-17, North Murray 65-18 and Murray County 54-21 on their way to the 2024 championship.”All of our boys wrestled hard and aggressive,” said Seth Broome, Coahulla Creek’s head wrestling coach, in a press release. “Every wrestler in our lineup contributed (to the win). Turtles need water to survive, so it’s only fitting that we brought it home to ‘The Creek.'”Hosting this year’s tournament, Dalton High’s Catamounts entered as the defending champions after winning the Cup in 2023 by dethroning Southeast, the winner of the 2022 tournament. Prior to that battle, the Catamounts took home the 2021 trophy following a three-year winning streak by Northwest. After seven years, the coveted Conasauga Cup turtle-themed wrestling trophy is back at Coahulla Creek High School.

“There were over 20 teams from Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama at the tournament,” said Woods. “We had a really good showing.”The annual Conasauga Cup wrestling tournament, named after the river that borders Whitfield and Murray counties, took place at Dalton High School and featured six local high school wrestling teams in round robin-style duals competition. The team’s 2024-25 schedule is set to end on Feb. 13 with the varsity state traditional championships at the Macon Coliseum.Coahulla Creek last held the turtle trophy during the 2017-18 season. Under former head coach Brent Raby, the Colts defeated Dalton High 51-18 in the final round of that year’s tournament. The Colts capped off 2024 with a 22-3 overall record, including three wins and a loss in Region 7-2A matchups. That included hosting a varsity “Clash at the Creek” duals tournament at the high school on Dec. 21, when the Colts placed third.”We’re real proud of the wrestling team and the work that they’ve put in,” said Coahulla Creek Athletic Director Chris Woods. “Coach Broome is doing a great job with the team and they’ve had a really good year so far. Winning the Conasauga Cup was huge because that’s something that we always take a lot of pride in. It involves all of our area teams and it’s been quite a while since we’ve (won) it.”
