ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown baseball team dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader at Cornell, falling 9-6 in the opener, before weather and darkness assisted in giving Cornell a 13-10 win in game two. The Bears scored 10 runs in the top of the eighth inning of game two to take a 20-13 lead and were still batting in the frame when fog and darkness rolled in, forcing a stoppage and conclusion to the game, which resulted in the score reverting to the start of the inning, giving Cornell the win.
Six different players had one hit apiece in game one, while Mark Henshon, Miles Newsome, Christian Butera and DJ Dillehay all had two hits apiece in game two. Alex Benevento reached base safely in six of his eight plate appearances on the day, which included five walks. Newsome and Dillehay each homered in game two. On the mound, Carter Barth tossed 4.1 innings of relief in game one, allowing two earned runs and two hits.
GAME 1
Cornell jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and held a 5-2 lead after three innings, all while compiling just two hits. Brown’s two runs in the third both came on a double by Mika Petersen.
Trailing 7-2 after four, Brown scored two in both the fifth and sixth innings pull within one. Nathan Brasher doubled home Boree and later scored on a passed ball in the fifth. In the sixth, Andrew Hanlon knocked in a run with a safety squeeze, and Boree added an RBI single with two outs.
The Big Red put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth off a pair of hits and a sac fly to push the lead to 9-6 before holding Brown hitless over the final three innings.
GAME 2
The Big Red sent eight men to the plate as part of a five-run first inning by way of two walks, two hit by pitches, and two hits.
Brown fought back with three runs in the second on three hits. Henshon drove in a run with a single, Newsome singled and scored on a wild pitch, and Boree laid down a successful safety squeeze.
The Bears pulled within one in the fourth when Newsome roped his first homer of the year with a line drive over the high wall in left, but Cornell countered in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer to push the lead to 8-4.
Brown rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth to take the 9-8 lead, highlighted by their only hit of the inning, a huge three-run homer by Dillehay to left center field that pulled Brown within 8-7 at the time. The Bears then loaded the bases with nobody out and scored both the tying and go-ahead runs on walks. All told Brown sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth, drawing six walks and a hit by pitch.
Cornell retook the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Bears retied it on a Henshon double in the sixth. Cornell took the lead with a pair of runs on the sixth with two bases loaded walks and tacked on another unearned run in the bottom of the seventh of the 13-10 lead.
Brown rallied with a huge 10 run top of the eighth to go up 20-13. While still batting with only one out in the top of the eighth, fog quickly rolled in and paired with darkness, the game was called at that point. By rule, the game reverted to the start of that inning, thus resulting in a 13-10 Cornell victory.
Brown will start an eight-game homestand this coming Tuesday when the Bears welcome Bryant to Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
