COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 3 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team extended its win streak to 11 games with a 14-10 victory at No. 17 Johns Hopkins Saturday at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. The Buckeyes improve to 11-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Big Ten Conference as the Blue Jays drop to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
 
The Short Story
Ohio State had three scoring runs of three or more goals and didn’t allow Johns Hopkins to score more than two in a row in Saturday’s game. The Buckeyes only allowed the Blue Jays to more than two goals in one quarter of the game and five goals combined in the other three quarters on the day to become the first team in the Big Ten to three league wins.
 
Alex Marinier led the team with six goals and seven points. It was his second time hitting his career-high seven point mark in a game this season. Garrett Haas tallied his third hat trick of the year with three goals, all in the third quarter, and finished the day with four points. Jack McKenna recorded the team’s first goal of each half for his second consecutive multi-goal game.
 
Caleb Fyock made 15 saves against the Blue Jays, his fifth straight game with double digit saves.
 
Saturday’s victory marked Ohio State’s first win over the Blue Jays in Baltimore since 2021. The team’s 14 goals are also the most scored against Johns Hopkins since the 14-8 win in 2021. For the sixth time in the 19-game series history between the programs, the Buckeyes held Johns Hopkins to 10 or less goals.
 
How it Happened

  • Ohio State jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first six minutes of the game with goals from Jack McKenna (13:04), Alex Marinier (9:57) and Liam White (9:24).
  • The Buckeyes held the Blue Jays to just one shot in the first eight minutes and didn’t allow a goal until Matt Collison found the back of the net at 6:18 for Johns Hopkins’ first of the day.
  • Nearly two minutes later the Blue Jays scored their second goal of the game to cut the Buckeye lead to one.  
  • Marinier responded with a goal at 1:12 to give Ohio State the 4-2 advantage after the first quarter.
  • Johns Hopkins was first to score in the second quarter, recording its third goal of the day at 12:48 to again come within one of the Buckeyes. It would be the closest they got to neutralizing the Buckeye lead in the game.
  • A four-goal run by the Buckeyes fueled by three goals from Marinier and one from Ben Mayer in the final 10 minutes of the half gave Ohio State the 8-3 lead at the half.
  • The third quarter was the highest scoring quarter of the day with nine goals recorded between the teams. The Blue Jays outscored the Buckeyes, 5-4 in the frame.
  • Johns Hopkins tallied the first two goals of the half and McKenna tallied Ohio State’s first of the half at 11:37. The Blue Jays had an answer in a goal from Brooks English at 11:16 and Garrett Haas responsed with his first goal of the game at 9:57 for the fifth goal in just over five minutes into the half.
  • Both teams had two-goal runs in the final nine minutes of the third with Johns Hopkins scoring two consecutive goals within a minute at 8:42 and 7:43 and Haas completing the third quarter hat trick for the Buckeyes with goals at 4:38 and 1:24 to give Ohio State the 12-8 advantage with one quarter remaining.
  • Each team recorded two goals in the fourth quarter as Ohio State scored the first two of the frame thanks to Marinier (11:25) and Gannon Matthews (10:40).
  • The Ohio State defense kept Johns Hopkins without a goal for nearly 20 minutes in the second half as the Blue Jays recorded the final two goals of the game in the final 3:09 to bring the final score to 14-10.

Ohio State is back home next weekend for its final regular season game at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium this season. The Buckeyes will host Maryland Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
