MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s Volleyball continues to build up their 2025-26 squad with youthful talent, adding freshman Zoe Joshua out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks. Unlike most prep players, Joshua focussed purely on beach while playing for the Knights, giving her loads of experience on the sand despite coming in as just a freshman.

With numerous tournament wins to her name including the the 18u AVP and the 18u Walker Beach, Joshua concluded her pre collegiate beach career by being named the Mission League MVP after leading Notre Dame Sherman Oaks to an undefeated regular season and a trip to the CIF Southern Section DII Tournament. Standing at 5-8 and left hand dominant, Joshua will bring another dynamic dimension to Saint Mary’s Beach Volleyball

Joshua originally committed to the University of Utah, but after the discontinuation of their program, re-opened her recruiting and selected Saint Mary’s to be the place to call home for the next four years.

“Zoe  is a 5’8″ left-handed defender who has achieved notable success in her beach volleyball career!” noted Head Coach Janice Harrer, “Her passion and persistence are qualities that will bring her success in the classroom and in competition!  She brings notable experience on the sand, and we look forward to what she will bring to the SMC program!”

Now with four true freshmen coming in for the 2025-26 season, the Gaels truly have set the building blocks for success in the near and far future.

Going into this just-completed high school sports year, the 35th consecutive year of covering Orange County high school sports, the thinking was that I had seen everything.

Nope.

The Dana Hills baseball team committed eight errors but still won the game. The unranked Dolphins beat Aliso Niguel — ranked 13th in Orange County — 9-8 in a South Coast League game on April 25. Sophomore Ryan See’s line drive down the left-field line in the bottom of the seventh inning sent home Tommy Moro with the winning run.

That was one highlight from another entertaining high school sports year that ended this month. There was too much good stuff to include it all here. And some not-so-good stuff.

As the back end of the college football season keeps expanding for upper-echelon teams, a proposal is now on the table to turn the early Week 0 window for select games into the new start to the season.

By moving the season up one week for all teams, not just those who obtain a waiver for an early start, the college football season would gain a 12th week as soon as 2026. It would also give teams an option for an additional bye week during the season.

All of the discussion about when to start the season comes as changes to the College Football Playoff format have been tabled for now. After moving to a 12-team playoff last season, the postseason could expand to as many as 16 teams with five automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large teams.

The proposed changes to the front and back ends of the schedule have come at the current gathering of Division I conference commissioners this week at Asheville, N.C.

“My view is we should have a consistent start date,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey told Yahoo Sports. “The adage is teams make their most substantial improvement between games one and two. I think we should have a consistent start date. Labor Day weekend has been a good start date for college football.”

The new start date proposal would move Labor Day weekend to the second week of the season.

There are four games scheduled for Week 0 this season (Aug. 23): Kansas State and Iowa State will meet in Dublin, Ireland, while Fresno State is at Kansas, Sam Houston is at Western Kentucky and Stanford will play at Hawaii.

The Keiser volleyball team released its 2025 schedule on Friday. The upcoming season features 25 matches, including 14 at home inside the Student Life Center.

Keiser will open the season by hosting a 12-team tournament, where the Seahawks will face Taylor and Montana Western in their first matches. The bracket-style format ensures each team plays four games, with the opportunity to advance to the championship or consolation bracket.

Coming off a strong 2024 campaign, the Seahawks finished with a 28-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark in Sun Conference play, earning the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. Their season concluded in the semifinal round, with four players earning All-Conference honors—highlighted by SUN Player of the Year and the program’s first SUN Freshman of the Year, Emma Friese.

The 2025 season marks a new chapter for Keiser Volleyball under first-year Head Coach Dan Bergen. Hired in February, Bergen brings a championship pedigree, having helped lead Indiana Wesleyan to back-to-back NAIA National Championships (2023 & 2024) during his tenure as assistant coach. His resume also includes four Crossroads League titles and deep postseason runs, including appearances in the NAIA Sweet 16 (2020) and Elite Eight (2019). During his time with the Wildcats, Bergren developed 10 NAIA All-Americans and 22 all-conference players. He was named the 2024 AVCA NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year and was a two-time AVCA Mid-Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year (2020 & 2024). During his six seasons with IWU, the Wildcats posted a record of 179-27.

“I’m looking forward to getting the 2025 Keiser Volleyball season underway,” said Bergen. “I feel we’ve brought in a group that can compete at a high level, along with seasoned returners who know the expectations. We’re hosting two preseason tournaments that include six teams from the 2024 NAIA Tournament and programs from top NAIA conferences.”

“Those tournaments will help us evaluate the team early and prepare for the Sun Conference schedule. With a new coaching staff, new faces, and strong returners, we’re excited about continuing the upward trajectory of this program.”

Key Dates

  • Keiser will open the 2025 Season with a 12-team tournament hosted at home in the Student Life Center on August 15th and 16th
  • The Seahawks will host a second tournament from August 21st to 22nd welcoming six teams to West Palm Beach, Fla. in a six team round robin
