Caleb Plant vs. Jose Resendiz fight results, highlights

Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo were in action on Saturday with a showdown later in the year hanging in the balance as both men simply had to win their fights as massive favorites. While Charlo held up his end of the bargain by trouncing Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna, Plant was shocked in the main event, dropping a split decision to Jose Armando Resendiz.

Resendiz’s pressure throughout the fight kept Plant from ever getting comfortable. While Plant got off to an early lead in the fight, he never put together sustained combinations and throwing one or two punches at a time allowed Resendiz to pile up momentum as the rounds went by.

When Plant’s corner was imploring him to turn up the heat late, Plant either didn’t have the energy or the ability to fend off the constant forward movement of Resendiz and the fight quickly got away from him.

By the end of 12 rounds, it appeared Resendiz had done enough to take the decision and Plant’s interim WBA super middleweight title. Two fo the three official judges agreed, giving Resendiz the win by scores of 116-112, 113-115 and 116-112.

“Listen, I don’t blame them,” Resendiz said of being a massive underdog entering the fight. “I knew everyone was going to be against me … but I believed in myself.”

Resendiz was a +1100 underdog, matching the odds when Andy Ruiz pulled off his shocking 2019 upset of Anthony Joshua to become unified heavyweight champion. Resendiz ended the fight with a 186 to 108 advantage in punches landed.

One fight earlier, Charlo easily handled his business against LaManna, scoring three knockdowns before the ringside physician stepped in to call off the bout in the corner following the fifth round.

Charlo, who had been out of action since November 2023 and had only fought twice since 2020, showed few signs of ring rust against LaManna.

It took seconds for Charlo’s powerful jab to mark up LaManna’s face. From there, Charlo patiently walked LaManna down, landing hard punches that repeatedly hurt and dropped LaManna.

Charlo held up his side of the process to make a fight with Plant, who delivered a slap to Charlo’s face in an infamous 2023 confrontation at the weigh-in for Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr.

“I was more focused on getting this fight out of the way,” Charlo said of a Plant fight after his win. “They know what it is. They know where I’m at. I want my lick back. It’s going down.”

Instead, a fight with Resendiz could be in Charlo’s future. It’s a fight Resendiz said he would pursue with an upset earlier in the week.

“I’m ready to fight everyone,” Resendiz said after his win. “Whoever the public wants.”

CBS Sports was with you throughout the entire way on Saturday, beginning with the start of the main card broadcast at 8 p.m. ET.

There’s a new women’s world champion, and her name is Naomi. After losing her match earlier in the night with Jade Cargill under the No Holds Barred stipulation, Naomi managed to drag herself back out to the ring at the end of the main event between champion Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley to make use of her Money in the Bank contract and score the pinfall of Sky to win the title. It was a wild way to cap off the second edition of WWE Evolution as an all-women’s PPV event.

That’s not the only title match fans in got to see in Atlanta. WWE women’s champion Tiffany Stratton mixed it up with a legend in her match, four tag teams competed for gold and a triple threat for the intercontinental title were among the big highlights of the night. And Stephanie Vaquer earned herself a future title shot by overcoming 15 other superstars to win the Battle Royal.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

2025 WWE Evolution card, results

Lynch retains intercontinental title in wild match

Things got started fast in Atlanta with Lynch, Bayley and Valkyria all going at it. The match featured plenty of frantic spots and near falls that kept the fans on their feet for the duration. Every time it appeared one wrestlers was closing in on the win, the third participant would break up the near fall. One of the highlights included Lynch hitting a double DDT, which was followed by Valkyria hitting Night Wing on Bayley for a near fall. Bayley appeared to have the upperhand late when she hit Valkyria with an enzugiri Roseplant, but Lynch broke up the pin by taking Bayley’s back and performing a backlside pin for the three count. It probably makes the most sense as a result here to keep the title on Lynch and have her move on to other things, and the same goes for Bayley and Valkyria. A great match that got the crowd fired up. Lynch def. Bayley and Lyra Valkyria via pinfall — Grade: B+

Jayne retains title with help

Jacy Jayne and Jordynne Grace put on a fine match with plenty of outside influence from the their stablemates. Jayne ended up getting the pin after a scramble for the belt to be used as a weapon resulted in it being tossed from the ring, only to be returned and used on Grace to get the three-count. Blake Monroe then entered the ring and handed the belt to Jayne despite being allied to Grace going into the match. A fine match for what it was. No complaints. Jacy Jayne def. Jordynne Grace via pinfall

Rodriguez, Perez overcome the odds to retain tag team titles

Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez had to deal with three teams to hold on to the championships on Sunday, but they managed to do it. The match saw multiple big spots from Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Asuka and Kairi Sane as they put on a great show for the fans in Atlanta. They were some great close calls, but the match ended after Rodriguez managed to powerbomb Bliss over the top rope and into both Sane and Asuka. Perez then dove onto Flair to allow Rodriguez to hit another one-armed powerbomb on Ruca and secure the win. Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez (c) def. Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair vs. The Kabuki Warriors (Kairi Sane & Asuka) vs. Sol Ruca & Zaria via pinfall

Stratton takes out a legend

Tiffany Stratton got all she could handle from Trish Stratus in their match. The Hall of Famer had some big moments and gave a better showing than her other recent appearances in the ring. Stratus hit her signature moves, including the bulldog and Stratusfaction, to give some hope that she could take the title from Stratton. But just as things seemed to be going her way, Stratton took momentum away and called it a night. Stratton picked Stratus up and hit an Alabama Slam to set up her finisher, The Prettiest Movesault Ever, for the three count. It was a hastily put together match, but it was a good showcase to give Stratton a showing to a wider audience. Tiffany Stratton def. Trish Stratus via pinfall to retain title — Grade: B

Sky, Ripley deliver a classic, Naomi cashes in

Cargill stands tall over Naomi

The two bitter rivals wasted no time in getting physical with weaponry. Cargill battered Naomi with a trash can before attempting to toss a toolbox on her outside the ring. Once Naomi swung the momentum, she attempted a flying kick to a prone Cargill next to the announce table, but blew up a TV monitor when she missed. Once back in the ring, Cargill took a TV camera and started to bash Naomi with it as things continued to escalate further. The match reached its end after Cargill hit Jaded from the top rope through a table for the three count. Bianca Belair didn’t factor in much as part of the bigger story at play, so her inclusion felt a bit out of place given there were no rules, really, but at least this is (hopefully) the end of this long rivalry. Jade Cargill def. Naomi via pinfall. — Grade: C+

Vaquer wins Battle Royal, earns title shot at Clash in Paris

The always hectic style of match created from rough spots with so many people in the ring. While the early action was a bit tough, the ending came together nicely with Stephanie Vaquer, Lash Legend (from NXT), Nia Jax and Nikki Bella as the final four. Jax took care of Bella to leave the two behemoths with the smaller Vaquer. Legend picked up Jax by herself and put her on the outside of the rope before Vaquer came over to assist. Vaquer then used her cunning smarts to get Legend on the outside to hit the Devil’s Kiss and eliminate her. Vaquer earned herself a world title shot at Clash in Paris in August and cut a strong promo afterward. A decently put togoether Battle Royal with a “correct” person winning. Stephanie Vaquer wins Battle Royal — Grade: B

Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley put on an old-school classic in the main event. They started with chain wrestling before exchanging blows. The two stopped in their tracks to tell each other of their respect for the other and then decided to truly fight. Ripley took the early edge by using her power and strength to bully Sky around the ring. Sky managed to turn the tide with flying hurricanrana. It led to a surge of attack from Sky, who hit a suicide dive out of the ring and then a missile dropkick from the top rope. As Sky looked to set up a finisher, Ripley managed to counter and create her own offense. As the two battled through chain wrestling, Sky managed to connect on a Poisonrana. Ripley then hit a Razors Edge — a nod to her former stablemate Damian Priest — followed by a situp powerbomb that also led to a near fall. Sky looked for another missile dropkick, but hit the referee inadvertently. Ripley hit Riptide, but there was no official to hit the three count. Ripley then took her frustrations out on Sky with more offense and then dragged her out of the ring and into the crowd. Sky managed to save herself from a powerbomb off of the equipment and then hit another major dive off the top onto Ripley. As the competitors made it back into the ring, Sky attempted to hit a sunset flip powerbomb, but was caught. Sky hit her Over the Moonsault finisher, but Ripley again managed to kick out. Ripley built momentum back and hit a Spanish Fly off the top rope that left both women prone in the ring. Then Naomi’s music hit and she cashed in her Money in the Bank contract to make the match a triple threat. Naomi then hit Sky with the briefcase and then a split-legged moonsault for the pin and win. Some great theater in the Sky vs. Ripley story, but it just kind of ends in a weird place with Naomi cashing in her contract to take the title. Interested to see where this goes with SummerSlam just a few weeks away. Naomi def. Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley to win Women’s World Championship — Grade: B+
