But this year, the crowds are noticeably thinner. Keen to bring them back, Seattle is offering a hefty discount — in hopes of reviving the cross-border tradition during three games this weekend against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
Iconic seafood restaurant Ivar’s, the Space Needle and the Pacific Science Center are among dozens of businesses participating in the promotion that accepts Canadian dollars at par all weekend. With the loonie worth just 72 U.S. cents, that effectively gives visitors who show Canadian IDs about a 30% discount.
“I think we’re earning goodwill, which is what we wanted with our neighbours,” said Ivar’s founder Bob Donegan. “But we are not seeing a significant increase in the number of Blue Jay fans coming to Seattle.”

At the Blaine, Washington border crossing, a major entry point for visitors from Vancouver, southbound traffic was down 52% in the first two weeks of April compared to the same period last year. Passenger arrivals on Air Canada flights to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport dropped 66% in March.
Canadians cite frustration with U.S. policies under President Donald Trump, including tariffs and his repeated suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state. Other travelers are avoiding the U.S. over fears of being detained or pulled aside for questioning at the border as part the Trump administration’s broader immigration crackdown.
Adding to the strain, Canada’s economy is showing signs of weakness. Data released Friday showed the country’s unemployment rate rose to 6.9% in April amid job losses in sectors like manufacturing that are affected by tariffs.

The program to accept Canadian currency, called “Open Arms for Our Canadian Friends,” includes hotels, restaurants and even transportation companies like FRS Clipper, a boat service between Seattle and Victoria, British Columbia, as well as Kenmore Air, which runs seaplanes between Washington State and western Canada.
Even with this effort, Donegan said that looking out his window on Friday, he saw none of the signature Blue Jays ballcaps that typically swarm the area during the games.
He also said interviews that he’s done with Vancouver radio stations in recent days have been followed by angry fans calling in to say they’re “so irritated with the American policy that they are not coming to town.”
“They’re typically delightfully goofy Canadians who are so friendly and so focused,” Donegan said. “So we miss them a lot.”

Fitness tech company Whoop has a pair of new wearables, four years since its last product launch. The devices in question are the Whoop 5.0 and the Whoop MG, both of which require you to take up a subscription when you purchase. For those not aware, Whoop bands aren’t available as standalone devices. A membership unlocks their features.
Both new products are screenless, no-nonsense wearables with an estimated 14-day battery life and 10 times the power efficiency of their predecessor, the Whoop 4.0. The new devices are smaller than the 4.0 too, and both are designed to be worn 24/7 thanks to always-on sensors. The main difference between the Whoop 5.0 and the MG is the latter’s medical-grade ECG capabilities (hence the “MG” in the name) and daily blood pressure readings.
How much functionality you get from your Whoop wearable depends not only on the model you choose, but the membership plan you take up with it. The entry level $199-per-year “One” tier will provide “professional-grade fitness insights” that include the fitness tracker fundamentals, like sleep tracking, step count, heart rate zones and hormonal insights for women. With this plan you get the Whoop 5.0 and a basic charger, as well as a CoreKnit band.
Stepping up to the $239 “Peak” tier nets you everything on Whoop One, as well as real-time stress monitoring and the new Healthspan metric, which assesses your long-term health prospects by measuring your Whoop Age and Pace of Aging, and offers “guided insights and actionable recommendations” accordingly.
The premium tier is called “Life” and is exclusive to Whoop MG users and costs $359 a year. With this you can expect daily blood pressure insights, ECG readings and irregular heart rhythm notifications. Life members also receive a SuperKnit Luxe band and a waterproof wireless charger.
Whoop offers a one-month free trial of its previous Whoop 4.0 membership. You can then choose between the three new membership tiers and the devices attached to them after or before your trial ends. Current members can also choose to from today.

Evolt 360, the brand’s body composition scanner, is a powerful and advantageous tool in more than one sense Evolt is giving users a comprehensive, inward view of themselves, and in turn, fitness brands the means to stay ahead in a fast paced industry. Evolt is giving users a comprehensive, inward view of themselves, and in turn, fitness brands the means to stay ahead in a fast paced industry. While the brand’s complete Health Tech Ecosystem, featuring Evolt 360, Evolt Insights and the Evolt Active App, collectively helps fitness consumers and facilitators alike, its Body Scanner lies at the front of those efforts.
Able to conduct more than 40 measurements in only 60 seconds, the product’s core functionality centers around identifying lean muscle mass and fat via bioimpedance technology, then presenting that information to users in an easily digestible manner. However, it’s also a bonafide revenue booster. There’s no shortage of gyms and members already realizing that, too.
“We’re able to use the machine more as a business tool rather than just a body fat scanner,” said Evolt co-founder and CEO Ed Zouroudis. “We’re so much more than that. It’s a revenue-generating device.”
Evolt’s doing it at just the right moment. With new demands from fitness consumers colliding with other innovations that make the product valuable, it’s clear the time to scan is now.
In this era of fitness and wellness where personalization is almost a necessity rather than novelty, Evolt finds itself in an ideal position to hand gyms and studios exactly what they need to support their members.
“We are proving to be that business tool where we’re getting, aggregating data and making it meaningful,” said Zouroudis. “Everyone talks about big data, but actionable data provides outcomes. It’s so important that people are monitoring their gains and losses on their journey to get to their own destination, especially muscle mass.”
In doing so, Evolt focuses largely on nutrition as well as muscle mass in relation to body fat. By breaking down a user’s macronutrient profile and providing personalized recommendations, the Evolt Ecosystem helps users make sure they’re getting enough protein, carbs and fats, as well as the right supplement recommendations.
“We’re making sure people are getting what their body requires on an individual, personalized basis,” Zouroudis added.
With the widespread increased attention around wellness, along with the ongoing GLP-1 explosion, Evolt’s ability to differentiate muscle mass from fat and present it in an easy to understand format also makes the 360 Body Scanner a timely addition to any gym or studio.
“We know members join the gym to alter body composition one way or another,” said Zouroudis. “They either want to lose fat to tone up or build muscle mass, especially now with the GLP-1 tsunami that’s hit the US. Because of this strong link between longevity and lean body mass, everybody’s looking for the opportunity to identify that by scanning regularly on the Evolt 360 .”
Evolt estimates that 30 million Americans will be on GLP-1 medications by 2030.
“We’re perfectly aligned to do that duty, for people to monitor and track their body composition changes,” Zouroudis said. “That’s why we work so well with our partners in the fitness space — we aim to be the quantifier of real, measurable change.”
Evolt reports it’s nearing 10 million total scans with its body scanner. Consequently, it’s also nearing 3 million hooked fitness consumers.
“We know that it strongly correlates with retention and engagement,” said Zouroudis. “We’ve seen an increase in top line revenue close to 10% just by incorporating Evolt 360 scans into tiered memberships. There’s been a massive uplift in physical therapy revenue as well, upwards of 150%.”
Zouroudis also cited a study where on average, members who did not conduct scans visited their location four times or less per month. However, after completing at least one scan, their average visits jumped to eight or nine. Then, after two scans, it ascended to 12 to 13. He also noted that profitability has led to a few vendors doubling or even tripling down on body scanners, purchasing additional units for locations to supply the demand and multiply monetary returns.
“From a qualitative perspective as well, we see daily our gyms’ members are posting on social media with their results,” added Kai Bugden, Head of Global Marketing at Evolt. “You can see how happy and stoked they are with their progress, results and journey.”
Aside from its own retention-boosting nature, the 360 Body Scanner also helps gyms keep members on board by operating as a watchdog for disengaged individuals.
“They’re using it as a major retention tool, being able to identify who’s at risk of leaving or who’s actually backsliding in their results,” Zouroudis. “Then, they’re able to engage with them and reach out, maybe give them a bit of love and care.”
Evolt’s multifaceted effect on gyms isn’t bound by anything either. Assistance from the brand doesn’t start and stop with product installation. Evolt carries a team of marketing professionals, sports scientists and business success experts who help gyms and studios get the word out on their device and are fully educated on how to use it, making sure they capitalize on it.
“The last thing I want to be known for as a company is just the body fat scale,” said Zouroudis. “We have a solid team of professionals that support our clients along the way. With our competitors, they buy the product and that’s it.”
That said, Evolt also offers comprehensive installation support. The brand not only sends a team to handle setup, but also provides an education team and supporting content to help gyms and studios maximize their investment.
“We have courses available where they get certified as a body composition specialist,” said Zouroudis. “It’s just helping to educate the industry.”
Like its product’s users, Evolt is committed to bettering itself over time as well. In the future, the brand plans to weave elements of artificial intelligence (AI) into the scanner, adding another layer of oversight to their fitness and wellness.
“There’s going to be a lot of AI that we’re introducing,” said Evolt co-founder Kelly Weideman. “That’s helping with predictive and preventative measures, looking into their future and making sure they’re educated about making healthy choices — really understanding body composition and how they can improve it.”
Evolt also plans to take its products to new regions soon, citing Europe as a focused area of interest.
“We’ve just appointed several new distributors, one being InSpace in the United Kingdom,” said Zouroudis. “Evolt’s obviously been quite big in the U.S., Australia and Asia — Europe is a new market for us that we’re targeting right now, rolling out as we speak.”
The brand is also eager to bring its product to Athletech News’ Innovation Summit this summer, a premiere event that brings together the industry’s top executives and innovators for two days of impactful content.

The Northwestern University recently announced a partnership with the global premier experiences company Legends and JMI Sports for a new multiyear multimedia rights partnership supporting the new Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois (US), the Northwestern Athletics and the broader Northwestern University campus.
‘nusports.com’ stated that the long-term agreement between the Northwestern and two of the leading sports media rights companies reflects the shared vision of the three entities in elevating the Northwestern brand and Chicago’s (US) position as a sports and entertainment epicenter for the Big Ten Conference (a collegiate athletic Conference in the United States).
The Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois (US) is a comprehensive research university that is deeply interdisciplinary across multiple schools and units. A founding member of the Big Ten Conference the Northwestern University sponsors 21 varsity sport programs with 500 participating student-athletes.
New York (US)-based Legends is a global premium experiences company that works with some of the most iconic and innovative brands in sports and entertainment to deliver exceptional experiences for the fans worldwide. The company offers its partners a 360-degree data and analytics-fueled service solution platform to drive revenue, heighten their brand and execute their vision.
San Diego (US)-based JMI Sports is a leading media rights and venue development company that provides management of collegiate multimedia rights, sponsorship sales agency representation and project management expertise for the development of collegiate and professional sports facilities.
The new Ryan Field is a replacement stadium presently under construction for the Northwestern University’s football team – the Northwestern Wildcats (which is a member of the Big Ten Conference) – set to open in 2026 and is being built on the same site as the 47,130-capacity old Ryan Field. The new stadium will feature 35,000 seats, a smaller capacity than the old stadium, but with a steeper, fully covered seating bowl and individual seats along with more premium seating and a state-of-the-art design.
‘nusports.com’ further stated that through this relationship Legends and JMI Sports will maximize the value of the new Ryan Field and Northwestern’s multimedia rights delivering innovative partnerships and enhancing experiences for the Wildcat fans and the larger Chicagoland community.
Exulted Mark Jackson, Combe Family (personal care products company which has strong ties to the Northwestern University) Vice-President for Athletics and Recreation, “We’re thrilled to launch this partnership with Legends and JMI Sports to strengthen our connection with Northwestern’s passionate fanbase and the corporate community. This relationship with dedicated and proven partners will further accelerate the growth of the new Ryan Field helping our mission of delivering a world-class venue for the Northwestern University and the Chicago community.”
The above partnership builds upon the hard work between Northwestern, Legends and JMI Sports surrounding the implementation of the new Ryan Field. As the largest stadium investment in college football history the new Ryan Field will deliver a world-class venue optimized for game days and civic events alike that ultimately redefine the traditional stadium model into a year-round community asset.
Legends and JMI Sports will begin their multimedia rights efforts with the launch of a Founding Partnership plan for the new Ryan Field. Their full complement of multimedia rights efforts for Northwestern Athletics and Northwestern University’s campus will begin in July of 2026.
Observed Erik Judson, head honcho, JMI Sports, “Northwestern is proactively setting a course to address the new landscape of college athletics by investing in the new Ryan Field. Coupled with Northwestern’s innovative approach to managing their athletics enterprise this transformational strategy aligns perfectly with the combined strengths of JMI Sports and Legends.”
Commented Chris Hibbs, President of Global Partnerships, Legends, “Legends is honored to partner with Northwestern to enhance the value of their multimedia rights platform including the new Ryan Field. Northwestern’s rich tradition of academic and athletic excellence, along with a passionate alumni and fanbase and the visionary new Ryan Field, create a compelling opportunity for strategic partnerships. We are excited to collaborate with JMI Sports and Northwestern to leverage our proven expertise in securing premier partnerships to unlock innovative opportunities and generate new revenue opportunities that align with Northwestern’s vision and values.”
