BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opens its 2025 spring men’s golf schedule against a top-ranked field Monday in the Battle at Briar’s Creek at Johns Island, S.C.
No. 92 Campbell is among nine teams ranked among the nation’s top 100 in the 14-school event. After Sunday’s practice round, the 54-hole event begins with the first two rounds Monday on the par-72 Golf Club at Briar’s Creek, followed by Tuesday’s final round.
The Camels opened the 2024-25 campaign with a runner-up showing at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate and took second-place honors at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. CU also logged sixth place finishes at tournaments hosted by West Virginia and Furman.
At last year’s rain-shortened Briar’s Creek event, Campbell finished eighth in the team standings. Joachim Larsen Tegner (67-75—142) tied for fourth individually, while Erik Johansson finished T19 (72-74—146).
No. 35 College of Charleston, No. 37 Wake Forest and No. 51 NC State are the highest-ranked teams in the Briar’s Creek field. Five other teams – Clemson (65), Chattanooga (76), Elon (87), Campbell (92) and West Virginia (94) are also ranked among the nation’s top 100. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.clippd.com.

The Coach: Now in his 35th year in charge of the Campbell men’s golf program and 34th as head coach of the CU women, John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure. His teams have combined to earn 36 NCAA post-season trips, including 15 consecutive team and individual invitations. His teams have won 161 tournaments and with 100 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (143) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women’s coaches and is tied for 10th in men’s coaching wins. No other coach in NCAA Division I history who has guided both men’s and women’s teams has registered more tournament wins. He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women’s side and eight in men’s competition. A 2006 inductee into the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Crooks was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Jan. 18.
The Lineup:
Sophomore Joachim Larsen Tegner (Lier, Norway) led the Camels with a 71.7 stroke average during the fall season. He finished among the top 12 individuals in all four events, including T8 showings at Myrtle Beach (71-69-71—211) and Georgetown (68-73-78—219). Larsen Tegner fired a collegiate low 5-under 66 in the final round of the Furman Intercollegiate. He has compiled 6 career top 10 finishes in 15 events and finished the fall season with the 10th-best national ranking (334) among CAA golfers.

Freshman Benjamin Killingstad (Blommenholm, Norway) competed in all four events during the fall semester. He opened the year with an even-par finish at Myrtle Beach (71-70-75—216) and led the team with a fourth place showing at the Georgetown event (68-72-76—216), where he fired a collegiate low, 3-under 68 in the opening round. He owns a 73.9 scoring average.

Senior Henric Bjelke (Oslo, Norway) opened the fall season with three-straight top 10 finishes. He compiled a 72.1 scoring average, second-best on the team and played par, or better, golf in seven of 12 rounds. Dating to last spring, he has finished among the top 20 individuals in seven of his last eight starts. Bjelke opened the season with a 5-under 211 (69-71-71) to finish T8 at Myrtle Beach. He was named CAA golfer of the week Oct. 2 after a T6 showing at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational. He shot a collegiate low 67 in the opening round of the Georgetown Intercollegiate and closed the fall ranked No. 419 nationally, 11th-best among CAA golfers. Bjelke was a 2024 Cobalt Golf GCAA All-America and the 2022 Big South Conference freshman of the year.

Sophomore Erik Johansson (Hollviken, Sweden) posted three top 20 showings in four tournaments in the fall season. The 2024 CAA rookie of the year and NCAA East Regional participant compiled a 72.8 scoring average this fall with five rounds of par, or better, golf. He finished T10 at the Georgetown Intercollegiate with top-20 showings at Myrtle Beach (T16) and Nemacolin (T20). Johansson was named CAA rookie of the year and a first-team all-conference selection in 2024 after he posted a team-leading 72.26 stroke average and earned an individual berth to the 2024 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.

Red-shirt sophomore Logan Graf (Sylvan Lake, Alberta) will compete in the Camel lineup for the first time. He joined the Camel roster this summer after playing in 15 events, including the 2023 MAC Championship, over two seasons at Eastern Michigan. Graf competed in the 2022 and 2023 Canadian Amateur championships and the ’23 Pacific Northwest Amateur. His brother, Carter, played golf at NC State from 2019-24.
